I’ve fitted hundreds of shutters over years farms included, as long as your buying an industrial spec door with the min of 20g curtain with a sprung barrel assembly your good, they just make a lot of noise in the wind, a good option would be a sectional door which are insulated, quiet and secure, OSA are not too far from yourselves you can give them a bell. Door companies travel every where so don’t be picky about being local, I use to average 1500 miles a week on average 👍

Tom, you don’t have to give us reasons for not finishing editing videos, your wellbeing is more important. For me I would stay clear of the roller-shutter doors, think you would regret putting it in, just something else to go wrong/break down, more money repairing, time spent repairing/downtime, really noisy in the wind as well. Keep up the fantastic work

Parlour is coming on well Tom! Not so sure about the roller door though, we have an engineering business here and deal with roller doors from time to time. Their not a great fit around livestock. Ok on a grain store or a workshop / machinery shed or something like that. They rattle a lot in the wind, even when their rolled up. Think it would spook the cows in the parlour. Plus it wouldn’t like the cow dung / constant washing. Would corrode very quickly. A good galvanised frame sliding door sheeted with tin would be the best option for you. And if the tin rots in a few years you can just replace it relatively cheaply. 👍🏻

Told you it would start to look like something now you're above ground.😁😁I'd be careful about roller shutters. All you'd need is the weight of a disobedient cow against them when they're shut and you won't be able to open them. Love that bit about the solar panels. You're going to have enough power to keep the Blackpool illuminations going!

If i could make suggestions, ask about see if other farmers you know have the type of rolling doors you're looking at and see if it's a good idea.
I would go with a door with as little moving parts as possible. Manuel of electrical and think sliding over rolling.
Etheir way it's will look amazing.
    Greetings from Norfolk..

Roller shutters are great when new but after that they can become a pain, any little knock by machinery or something the size of a cow and they damage easily. Maybe two big steel doors with a central block pillar, not sure what would be the best. What I do know is you are all grafters and it will look amazing when done, well worth the cost and effort.

roller shutter doors are best every time... as long as no one drive the manitou into it... it won't blow away in the wind like sliding doors do and I dare say you won't get a bespoke slider for much less than a couple of grand.. steel is so expensive nowadays and the fittings for a slider jeez!

Tom, I would look at which direction the privailing comes from, Roller shutter doors can get very noisy when the wind hits them, I would look at Heavy Poly Curtains about £250 for a 50m roll .

Why not a gate / barn door made of metal, like the cattle shed doors but to fit the entrance, just thinking of a cow where to back up into the roller shutter for what ever reason it’s expensive to fix

I’ve done work in many workshops etc with the traditional metal roller doors and the new bigger panel style doors. The metal ones can be very noisy as someone else mentioned. In our workshop we have the larger panel style roller doors and they’re great don’t move in the wind and don’t make any noise. Can also get them with window panels in aswell which can be handy.

Don't go for shutter, my old horse yard had them and if we had a power cut the shutters wouldn't go up with the power buttons, we had shutter that also had a chain so you could open it manually but it take a good 15 to 20 minutes to get the shutters up. Go for sliding doors that are easy enough for your dad to open and close, they will still do the job that you want them to do.

hi Tom the pit will best be served with a tanking waterproof render that if installed correctly will both stop all water and allow the fibre glass to stick and not float like a boat later . that water ingress will bite you in the arse innit solved.. modern techniques are available both render and coatings so just a thought. I once rendered my car pit that water literally flowed in stopped with I atant 15sec cement to stop water then rendered with additives that stopped all water from ever getting in.. we are a rural hilly location water is a shit problem to have but to avoid future issues that water needs to be stopped. regards

If you can Tom I'd look to put a drain from where your tank will be into the parlour pit, because if you ever get a problem with the tank leaking or milk not going in the tank it will run back in to the parlour pit and you'll be able to see it and stop before you've finished milking and realise none of the milk has gone in the tank.

WOW so much has been done and it's definitely taking shape.
Will you have to put in a sump pump to keep the water out, I had a koi pond when we lived close to the sea so the water table was high, we only dug 4 feet down and after laying the block work we had water ingress so had to dig a sump which solved the problem and while generating so much electricity the sump pump will be free to run.
Im glad to see you are still wearing your safety glasses 😉

It will take most of the summer to do what your doing…. I’m watching with interest….. we are building one here….. at the moment a year and half so far from when we broke ground on a new site…. We had 8/9 months in to do ours…. Still another two months at less…. A huge investment….. can’t be taken lightly…… keep up the good work…..😊

Dear Tom and the Ginger Warrior. It looks like a parlour shaped swimming pool at the moment, but I am looking forward to when it looks like a swimming pool shaped parlour 😁.
I do agree with the sentiment expressed earlier that you will find a roller door to be a bit of a maintenance nightmare and a multipaneled sliding door with hanging rollers might do better if there is room to contain it along the side wall (although the costs might be prohibitive).

Tom and the Ginger Guy, lots of progress in this week’s episode! I like the idea of a roller door because it gives you the flexibility to bring in large equipment if necessary but I suggest you talk to other dairymen who already have them and ask about durability and maintenance. You’re putting up a building that’s intended to last for many years to come and will have heavy use daily - you don’t need the headache of something that breaks frequently and that you’ll end up replacing in a few years time.

    • @thetessellater9163
      @thetessellater9163 ปีที่แล้ว +1

With roller shutter doors, all the weight of the door needs to be lifted up, using much electricty. Sliding doors, on rollers on rails only need to move side ways , with no weight lifted. Therefore the sliding one is less energy intense, and greener. QED 😉
Also with a sliding rail door, the only moving parts are the rollers, and as you say, roller shutters are high maintenance. And quieter ! No brainer.

As for the door shutters, It is really down to personal taste. Keep in mind of winter and strong wind and drafts. In summer rolling doors are great, but if wind is coming in, it is not great.

You can normally spot the cost cutters they are the doubled up ones limping about. Seriously someone once said to me and I still use this as a yardstick, how much would you charge considering you have to check over the machine and carry out any running repairs servicing. Deliver it towing a plant trailer diesel wages etc and then same again in reverse once you are finished.

I personally would prefer a sliding door. I don't know how a roll up door does in the dirty environment of a farm so I would choose something I know that does the job well. I really don't know what will be the best. Great video Tom, it isn't that big of a deal the video wasn't out on time I understand it that all the stuff that's happening takes a lot of time and the editing doesn't have priority. The cows are what is the most important they have the most priority 🐮 if the pressure rises to much just take a break from TH-cam for a bit we would really understand that😌 keep on doing the good work💪🏻

Not sure about the Roller shutter Door. if cow sticks head under on 1 side and lifts it will get stuck, could b a pain to free if wedged before you start the milking. Parlor will be opened on both sides at the same time, we go with 1 side at a time.

I am really happy for you, Tom, and the Ginger Warrior. Although you are working hard, you both haven't stopped smiling. Best wishes, God bless.

Great progress Tom. Amazing what you continue to achieve but as a machine owner/ operator I did wince watching you use the digger quickhitch as a demolition tool.😅

No to roll up doors unless you like working on them quite often. Farmers around here hate them. Bi-fold sliding doors are great!

... roller gate ... the big thing is as Albert Einstein said “Compound Interest is The Most Powerful Force in The Universe.”, this also applies to time, every time you free up time it makes it possible to take care of something else, cross something else of the to-do list. Just like what you've talked about the time saved with the new parlor. This roller gate will give you full access with no posts in the way to hinder production. Do I spend the time, on a brilliant day to open the swing doors, or press a button and the whole wall opens up. .. priceless ... sure there is maintenance, what is not maintained, greased, breaks and costs money, once a week someone does the rounds with a grease gun and gives things a once over visual and a few pumps of grease.. a few pumps of grease go a long way ..... thx for the share .. as always .. never stop dreaming just dream bigger .. have fun be safe, save our oceans ....

Roller shutters are good, but you'll need strong runners. If they take a bang, then you'll be stuffed.
