For as long as I can remember, golf has always been a popular video game genre. I remember dabbling with the likes of Leaderboard on the C64 and Amiga, and I became quite partial to the occasional tour of Mauna Kea or Banff Springs in Links 386 Pro on my first PC back in the day. When getting bored of playing properly, there was always the added amusement of seeing what would happen when driving the ball hard into the side of the clubhouse or into the nearest car park to see what would happen. These were games that, intentionally or not, were surprisingly relaxing affairs, even if you weren't a massive fan of the real thing.
However, I would never have considered golfing a natural fit for an arcade coin-op, yet Nazca, creator of the Metal Slug series, thought otherwise. The dev team swapped rocket launchers and over-the-top explosions for a bag of clubs and silly trousers, heading off for a swift 18 holes in Neo Turf Masters, released in 1996 for the Neo Geo console.
Surprisingly, it works really well. I think the game makes more sense as an AES home release than MVS coin-op, but no matter the format, it's actually a really solid interpretation of the sport and is good fun, provided you already enjoy golf games to begin with. Four courses and a selection of different golfers means there's a decent amount of content of offer, plus the inclusion of club selection, hooking/slicing and basic physics in the form of wind speed and terrain gradient mean the game certainly less perfunctory than you might think; sure, they're simplified when compared to dedicated golf simulations like Links or PGA Tour, but these systems add just the right level of complexity to keep the game interesting, without getting too bogged down with the finer details.
And as with many Neo Geo titles, NTM is pretty easy on the eye, boasting the kind of great sprite work, vivid backgrounds and fluid animation synonymous with the system; overall presentation is very slick indeed. Perhaps the only negative aspect was the terribly repetitive music; there's only so much smooth jazz one can take before reaching for the volume control.
Music aside, Neo Turf Masters plays well, feels polished and, if you enjoy golf games, easy to recommend.

That "recovery" on hole 7 was godlike.
I used to play this everytime my mom took me out to eat at Jerry's Pizza which was a small pizza place/bar, and they had this game as an arcade game, man this was a blast, proly spent dozens and dozens of dollars in quarters playing this back then. I almost forgot what golf game that was but when I heard the music about the hole info, I was like yepp this was it, definitely one of the best golf games out there in my opinion.

This is the Neo Geo game that I play most, by a mile.
“Terrible repetitive music” ??? I heavily disagree with you on that one the music in this game is really awesome, especially the Germany course. I can only imagine it being “repetitive” if you keep playing the same one course over and over again? (Gotta keep in mind this was also made as an arcade game where most people would only play for a short while) Still, nice long play showing off the game!
I have this on my Raspberry running NeoGeo on RetroPie, i love this game!! So many memories playing this with my kids...
I own this on mvs, favourite golf game by far, love it, such chill atmosphere.
I grew up in Vegas, and the arcade I went too (Mary K's, a 24/7 Japan style arcade hidden in a really bad area off the strip. It took up two office spaces and had blacked out windows. They some times have the doors opened in the morning to let the air in, as you also could smoke).
There was a wall of SNK machines and for along time and I always see a older guy who was a craps dealer (They wear a tuxedo), bow tie undone, sitting on a stool with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth always playing this on Saturdays
The fact they managed to make a GOLF game this enjoyable is an achievement
The graphics and sound are incredibly solid on this, and the gameplay is kept simple but with enough room for fucking up, too. You can play this for the first time, get a handful Birdies right away, and then have that bad streak come along. Whoever's playing here is making awesome shots.

Large storage size compared to its contemporaries, this game must be above >200 Megabits iirc, allowing more frames of animation than comsumer home consoles

Damn. That's a fine looking game. I've wanted a system for so long but have no interest in $400 games. Why they decided on music at all is bizarre. Live and televised, the auditory takeaway from golf is quiet. "ON THE GREEN!!" Really?
Clearly the Devs thought the only way to spice up golf for the arcade crowd was a lot of loud and super-excited voice-overs 😉
