Great advice. My 3 biggest takeaways were: 1- overlap the patch panel on top of the existing panel and use it to support the patch while welding. 2 - use lots of small spot welds and cool between welds. 3 - cut the gap between the panels at a 45 deg to minimize the gap.
Friends ask how I am able to do high quality rust repair as an untrained amateur. It is because I pay attention to experts like yourself and adapt their best practices. Thanks for the helpful tips! Your tips make my work look professional!

    Fitzee,
Your no nonsense , straight to the point style of metal work is so very refreshing. I have been metal working for 42 years , & I enjoy the way you share with us, tips & tricks you have learned / developed.
I also enjoy the way you use common tools , to make your parts. This is the way I have had to do for most of my life. No $$ wasted on gimmicky tools. You show it can be done, with talent . Which you have.
Thanks again for great content & down to earth common sense metal work.

I'm pouring over your videos. I've just acquired my grandfather's last work truck (1968 Mercury) which I haven't seen in over 40 years since it was sold (has gone through several owners since) when he had a stroke. She's rough, but still mostly all there: There's surprisingly enough left to work with. I loved this man to death, and am looking forward - although a bit scared of screwing it up - to bringing this truck, which I last rode in as a child listening to the hum of the bias ply tires wondering how he knew what gear to select - back to life. I'm 53 now, and he's been gone since '82 when I was 14. I'm no slouch at metal burning, but this is a labour of love, and so .. an entirely different level. Just want you to know that it will be your tips and tricks that will help me bring this piece of priceless childhood memory back to life. It'll be a journey .. but with your vid's I will drive this truck to work before I'm 55. Thanks Fitz.

Thanks so much for your experience and explaining. Been doing rust for too many years and a bit burned out on doing it. Your vid gave me a good kick in the butt and i went out and built a complete lower patch panel for below the tail light on my 56 chevy....nothing was available that was any good. So i just cut it apart and used your methods of 45 cuts and welding and cutting. Came out better than anything on the market and even dressed both sides...looks factory. Now to the dreaded splice down the middle of the rear quarter panel.....thanks👍👍👍👍

After watching, learning and seeing the results, now I walk at a 45 degree angle.
Looks like a Datsun 240, 260 or 280Z. 1 of 3 techs at the only dealer, the service manager offered 5 cent per flat rate hour for each of these new 8 test. Took them all and became an NIASE Master Tech and got 40 cents per flat rate increase in pay. Considering a good Tech was earning $6.40 per FRH, but customer pay was only $24.00 per hour. I still own a 69 Roadster that was the grandfather of the entire “Z” car line and design cues.
