I loved how you were talking about Kip and Andross being like Tyrion and Tywin. I felt the same, so much so that when I was reading this series, without meaning to, I always imaged Andross looking and sounding like Charles Dance.
Your Channel has come a long way mike! I enjoy all of the content. I’m currently reading The Blood Mirror book 4 and my Co Worker is currently reading Ruin by Gwynne. I read faithful and the fallen last summer and he read lightbringer. We swapped series. So we are enjoying each other’s reactions as we go through these series. We plan to tackle Mistborn together next.
First, I have to say that I love the artwork behind you! I think you were dead on about Iron Fist's card being a clue to his membership in the Broken Eye. It's not a stretch at all. Weeks has put lots of clues like this for most of the big, shocking reveals we get in this series, but they are easy to miss because we are usually lacking the necessary context to understand them. I strongly recommend that once you finish the series, you go back and start again from the beginning(haha...I know...who has the time). Once you already know the whole story, you'll find a ton of "bread crumbs" that hint at things to come during your second read through. I found that I enjoyed my second time reading the books much more enjoyable because I was constantly going "Ah! That's what that meant!" You really can't appreciate Weeks' genius on the first read. As a side note, the audio book narrator pronounces Rask Garadul as "Haradul". Not as an American pronounces "h" as in "hair", but as you would pronounce "Jorge" in Spanish. With the "h" sound being more glottal at the back of the tongue. Great review btw!
I watched your review on book for before this video. The review change is night and day. Just finished book 2. Don't know if I should continue. Enjoy book 1 and 2
Great review as always, I loved the Blackguard training in this book and the chapters from Kip's point of view, Teia's story was good, even if it dragged a little and the ending is epic
This book was so LONG! I took a break in the middle for a Dresden book. I liked it but the story never goes where I expect it or want it to go. I think Gavin’s room slave is who put him in the prison. The description of him getting his eye burned out was way too descriptive! Didn’t see that coming for Ironfist at all. Sad that Kip went through with the marriage, hoping that mistake is resolved at some point. Teia was great. The scene where Murder had her tied up was very uncomfortable and creepy. I had a feeling that Kerris would be the new White. Yeah so much of this was about the Kip and Andross and the political posturing for a new Prism that I forgot that a war was taking place until Kerris said so at the end. So hopefully the next book has more to do with the war. I lost track of where the blinding knife ended up but it seems like something they need to make a new Prism. Sounds like that being missing for so long is why Gavin got to stay Prism so long. I really hope they explain a lot of things like this in the next two books. I like exposition and info dumps...dump the explanation one so I know what is going on. I guess that would make it more predictable though. Thanks for this review...taking a break before book 4. I’m worried though, you mentioned in other videos that it destroyed you and it seems you still haven’t read book 5 so I am worried....
Blood Mirror is a highly divisive book. Many thought it was fine and others (ME!) simply hated it. As always, go into it with your own set of expectations and you'll be fine.
I'll like the video despite my confusion as to how you were able to get into this series. I read the first book and because it was written so poorly I swore I would never read another Brent Weeks book again (Night Angel not with standing).
Wow, really? I mean not all fantasy books are going to work for everyone. I mean, I disliked Night Angel so much I didn't even read book 2 & 3 and almost skipped this series because of it.
Man I agree about Corvin I really wanted his friendship with Gavin to get more page time. He could have rescued him and I was really happy with Kips maturity and how he becomes a man in this book and transitions out of childhood. As much as a 16 year old can.
@@mikesbookreviews It was great. Ive never read a series where there are no "white knight" type characters and so far im loving it. Planning on starting "the blood mirror" soon, ive heard its filled with despair.
Liv really gets left by the wayside in books 2 and 3. Such a shame considering I had high hopes for her arch after book 1. It almost feels like Brent forgets about her, and then realises, oh shoot, better make use of this character I set up so well in book 1. No hate on Brents writing, thats honestly just how I feel sometimes. As for Book 4, there are a number of really awesome reveals that are set up so masterfully, had me slack jawed numerous times. Just great writing, when those pieces fall into place, and your left feeling a little stupid, but also in awe. Hope you don't consider any of that spoilery. Also, I ordered the night angel trilogy 10th year anniversary edition after seeing it in your birthday book haul video. That thing is freaking gorgeous. I might not read it for a good while, but damn is it going to look good on my shelves! Also, as for recommendations, I'm currently reading the Dresden files by Jim Butcher, urban fantasy. Definitely worth checking out. Super fun, humourous books. A kind of noir detective feel to them. There are also pretty short and REALLY easy to read, not to much thinking involved, just a good time. They'd probably make for a good filler book when you find your schedule free. Saying that though, I'm only on book 2. So maybe take my recommendation with a pinch of salt.
I would also highly recommend the Dresden Files. There are so many fantastic characters in this series, and there is something for every fan of fantasy... wizards, warlocks, vampires, zombies, ghosts, werewolves, fairies(but don't call them that), plus so much more. Each book in the series just keeps getting better and better. The first couple of books are generally considered the weakest in the series, so if you liked them, you will love the rest of the series. Oh, and in case you didn't know, there are a bunch of graphic novel versions. Definitely check them out.
I get keeping your main villain a shadow and a threat, but I thought we'd at least see some of him through Liv's chapters. But now we only get like 2 of those.
I think you need to reread this book; specifically the part where Kip meets Abbadon. You appear to misunderstood what went on and why he gave Adrastia the cloak.
I had to read that section a few times to wrap my head around all of it, haha! I remember going over it twice just to get all the imagery detailed in my imagination and then a third time to think about all of the implications.
@@robmcbride4576 they do take some thought don't they? I didn't want to go into any spoilers for those who haven't read the books so I may have come across as a dick, the poor guy's on a schedule, most of us enjoy a more relaxed reading pace.
@@mrmisc5096 Didn't come across as a dick to me at all. I figured it was like that one chapter in The Shadow Rising by Robert Jordan where Rand was seeing visions of all of his ancestors in reverse chronological order; at first you feel like you missed things and were frustrated, but when you re-read it, you thought it was rather brilliant. Yes, I'm on a schedule, but I don't feel like I ever rush or "skim" anything. But I have been guilty of missing the implications of something before. I'll re-read that chapter before I start Blood Mirror.
The third and fourth book kind of run together in my mind because I ended the third book and immediately got into the next one. I will say the "step back" to expand the universe and reset the table of intrigue was definitely felt but, I never got bored. I think the last book is set up to be a wild ride. I don't want to ruin anything in book 4 without meaning to and I'm never quite sure how detailed to go in the comments haha. The comment section after you reviews book 4 might have to have a warning underneath if we can get enough hopes/expectations/theories going in discussion for the last book. As always: Thanks for the reviews and for turning my eye onto this series and others
I'm happy folks turned me on to this series and I can do the same for the others. Massive books that never feel like a chore to get through. I'll probably do a theories/preview/first 4 books spoiler video prior to the release of Burning White.
@@mikesbookreviews did you review book 4? I agree that it fell off hard and would love to hear what you specifically disliked about it. I finally got back on the saddle and am currently digging into book 5, it's an improvement so far
The hero getting his shit wrecked by a dolphin while thinking "wait I thought dolphins were nice" was perhaps the comedy highlight of the book.
I loved how you were talking about Kip and Andross being like Tyrion and Tywin. I felt the same, so much so that when I was reading this series, without meaning to, I always imaged Andross looking and sounding like Charles Dance.
