We’ve been watching your Dive videos for the past three years when we decided to come to Bonaire. We are here every six months and are in Bonaire right now. It would be great to dive with you guys or to even just have a conversation. Love your videos and tropic lens pictures.
Sorry for the delay and we would have loved to meet with you; but, unfortunately, we are responding from aboard the Norwegian Sun in Alaska. We have made some terrific friends through this little endeavor of ours, so please ping us when get back to Bonaire. And do let us know what you see. We miss it already! We saw a squid on the surface in the Seattle port and wanted to dive in. 🙂
Thank you for the beautiful footage! I wonder: do you ever try to interact with an octopus while diving? Like reaching out a finger to see if they'll reach out a tentacle in return - If they would let you get close enough to try? Or do you prefer only observing?
We prefer observing and filming; but that doesn't necessarily mean we're immune to the curious animal or two. We swim very slowly and will hang out for 10, 15 even 30 minutes when on a good subject; so it isn't uncommon for an inquisitive squid/octopus to swim closer to check is out. Leslie's big lenses seem to draw more attention than my small set-up. We have also posted clips of trumpetfish and shortnose puffers hanging around our camera arms as we shoot the reef. We always wonder what they think of us. :-)
I can’t believe I randomly clicked on one of the most amazing videos I’ve ever seen. I’m so happy I got introduced to your channel! It’s like you know that the ocean and sea creatures exist, but observing them this close up allows you to really understand these animals through a completely different lens (literally and figuratively.) I almost feel like I’m watching animated scenes at some points because of how crazy and unique they look, I’m mind blown looking at some of them. Yet the average person is unaware, for the most part, about the fascinating variations of species that exist in the ocean right now. The characteristics of land animals are pretty intuitive for most people because we see them way more often. The ocean is a bit more mysterious and secretive. There really is a whole other thriving world down there. Amazing video!!❤
Nice work you two! When we are on Bonaire I would love to pick your brain a little about how you manage to stay close and steady with some of these animals. I've been doing some video but everything just seems to swim away
No problem John, although I can share a few here for everyone. Buoyancy will come with practice, so I would prescribe more diving. :-) Your camera may have some stability features built in; but, after that, I might recommend some good post processing software. I use FCPX which has some pretty good stability features as well. As for animals that swim away, we have found that (like all creatures) each one has a different personality. If they swim away, right away; they're probably not worth pursuing. That said, if they just get closer to their protective area but don't duck in; those are more curious and you might have luck by approaching slowly. It may take hanging around for 5 - 10 minutes which seems (and sometimes feels) like a long time; but that pays off more often than you might think. And then there are those (few) that just come right up to you. Those are gold! :-) Happy to talk more when you get back down here.
We both use diopters for the small stuff, although I think I use mine much more than Leslie because her camera has VERY powerful lenses. For my part, I have the Divevolk +8 and the AOI UCL-900 +15.
@@TropicLens also, whats your take on the quality of the +8 macro lens. its discontinued, but might be able to get hold of one. was thinking if the picture/video quality is good as i have yet to try it out.
Hi Dave, great job as always!
Lots of cool stuff!
Thanks Dave! :-)
Great video, David! Awesome first-time captures!
It seems like the ocean never runs out of fantastic animals to show us!

did you use the diopter for the small stuff? or just the camera's zoom
