  • Riding a motorcycle on icy roads can be incredibly dangerous and puts the rider at risk of serious injury or even death. In this video, we'll discuss the dangers of riding on icy roads and provide tips on how to avoid getting on an icy road in the first place. We'll also discuss the best practices for riding on icy roads to keep yourself safe.
Firstly, it's important to understand the dangers of riding on icy roads. Icy roads can be incredibly slippery, and a motorcycle's two wheels can easily lose traction, leading to a loss of control. The cold weather also makes it difficult for riders to stay warm and focused, leading to slower reaction times and increased fatigue.
To avoid getting on an icy road, it's important to check the weather forecast before you set out on your ride. If there is any chance of ice or snow on the roads, it's best to avoid riding altogether. If you must ride, plan your route carefully and stick to well-traveled roads that are more likely to have been cleared or treated with salt or sand.
Once you're on the road, it's essential to ride slowly and cautiously. Keep your speed down, especially when turning or braking, and be mindful of any icy patches or black ice, which can be difficult to see. It's also important to keep a safe distance from other vehicles, as they may also be struggling with icy conditions.
To stay safe while riding on icy roads, consider investing in specialized tires that are designed for winter conditions. These tires have a different tread pattern that provides more grip in cold, wet conditions. You may also want to consider wearing heated gear to keep yourself warm and alert while riding in cold weather.
Finally, it's important to stay focused and alert while riding on icy roads. Avoid distractions like music or phone calls, and keep your eyes on the road at all times. If you do start to lose control, remember to stay calm and gently apply the brakes and steering to regain control.
In summary, riding a motorcycle on icy roads is incredibly dangerous, and it's important to take all necessary precautions to stay safe. Check the weather forecast before you set out on your ride, avoid riding on icy roads if possible, and invest in specialized tires and heated gear if you plan to ride in cold weather. Remember to ride slowly and cautiously, stay focused, and keep a safe distance from other vehicles to avoid accidents. Stay safe out there!

I made the same mistake once on a ride from Camp Nelson on CA 190 over the top to Kernville. Those switchbacks in the snow and ice were treacherous. The only reason we continued was that we had non-refundable motel bookings in Kernville. Really stupid. The damage from dropping the bike would have far exceeded the room charge. Not to mention potential injury. "Get-Motel-Itis". Never again.

Oof… man that’s rough. I kinda chuckled at “we had non-refundable rooms” because I’ve done that too 😂😂😂😂
