Koda Kumi singing this incarnation of the theme song brings me back to high school with all the hype and first trailers being released for Final Fantasy X-2.
not much of a hot take, given these are the same guys that would later do gurren laggon, panty and stocking, then created studio trigger with kill la kill being their major anime series, they made this the most fun, bombastic, and amazingly animated version of honey. plus not to mention the dub is just an icing on the cake of this amazing ova series. i was so happy to see this get a dub with not only the OG honey back, but also old and new cast members getting a chance to shine. i mean JOEY WHEELER IS IN THIS SHOW, and a cover artist that did this version's theme is in the show too.
i still can't accept that this thing came out 2 decades agom when something like bleach also came out 2 decades ago, this looks like something at least from 2016
Re: CH is probably my third-favorite Cutie Honey anime. I think New Cutie Honey is still better and I like the original 1973 Cutie Honey as well. The only Cutie Honey special, movie, or TV series I outright DESPISE is the sci-fi film, Cutie Honey: Tears. It completely misses the point and is a very dreary, depressing movie. Re: Cutie Honey is nice but it's very limited animation although still done well for what it is. You can tell this is the same animation staff that produced Kill La Kill a few years later! The one thing that's best about Re: CH is the theme music which was also used in the 2004 Cutie Honey live-action film (which also has to be license-rescued; it's had only one Blu ray release in Japan that I'm aware of) which Re: CH was the spin-off project of. It features THE BEST version of the classic Cutie Honey theme I've heard; I say this as someone who likes the 1973 recording, too! The 2004 Cutie Honey live-action film is perhaps the best live-action adaptation I've seen of an anime/manga classic. They don't do a lot of good live-action versions of anime/manga, period. I stay away from that Netflix shit!

I'm surprised that they actually made this dub a mix between the cast from the movie's dub cast and the cast from Cutie Honey Universe. Hearing Wayne Grayson back as Seiji kinda took me out of it because he sounds older than what he did when dubbing the movie. Honey tho, she sounds perfect. I just feel bad for those who decide to watch the movie right after watching this because in the movie, she isn't voiced by the same actress. I'm happy that they've mostly kept Honey consistent in English throughout the years. Her actress started voicing Honey in Shin Cutie Honey back around 1995 which was a gamble because it was the sequel to the original 1973 anime that wouldn't be seen in the US until many years after. Even though Shin Cutie Honey failed hard, fans have oddly begged for the staff to bring back Honey's actress. It seems like they're trying to do the same for Sister Jill, which is a welcomed change IMO.
New (Shin) Cutey Honey didn't really fail though, it was simply a victim of the end of the Japanese Bubble economy which crashed in 91' and which ran out of fumes by 94'. OVA sales were down period, and combined with the show's high production costs, just made continuing it at that time too difficult in combination with Toei's other production priorities. A shame, but not a failure.
ORDERED YESTERDAY along with Nanoha: Reflection! Mazinger Z: original series Blu ray 1 and getting caught up with Lupin are NEXT on my Discotek priorities list (besides getting anything that might be going OOP)! Discotek caught me off guard with 3 anime that went OOP in LESS THAN FOUR MONTHS last year! They were literally released April/May and gone by September/October 2022!!! Any idea on when Lupin III: The Fuma Conspiracy might be getting an HD re-issue? That film needs to be released on Blu ray or 4K next! Geez, we've gotten "The Birth of Ultraman" special on Blu ray AHEAD of that film! 😂

It plays on my computer's drive but will not play without video break up at points on my stand alone DVD player. The arrangement, tempo/beat, and singing by Kumi Koda put the 2004 version of the theme over the top. This is a theme that's had many covers by other artists (including the title actress of New Cutey Honey!) but Koda's surpasses the other covers. Oh, and I won't mention Cutie Honey: Tears, possibly THE WORST Cutie Honey film project. Even Cutie Honey Universe wasn't that far off the mark! 😂
