My old company commander was hired by the DEA as he was transitioning out of the army. Him & I always had a great professional relationship and he wrote me several letters of recommendation for college & other things. 3 years go by, I graduate college, and I send him an email stating my intentions to apply to the DEA. He gave me an unmeasurable amount of advice and now we work in the same building haha. All about building good contacts throughout your life

I am a career DEA agent hopefully retiring here in the next year or two. What I can say is it took me almost 3 years from the day I dropped my application in the mail until they called me with a class date so be prepared that you might have to wait a bit and take an interim job before you get the official job offer from us. I think currently we are about a year and a half on average for hiring people, largely due to the background investigation since all of us have to be top-secret and OPM is slow as hell about turning around backgrounds. Just be patient. It’s also a good idea to look up the phone number for the local office and give that particular division recruiter a call so they start hearing your name.

FBI and CIA allow you to apply within 12-15months of separation from military. That allows you to transition straight into agencies academy. FBI HRT for SOF guys allows you to join under Tactical Recruitment Program (TRP) when applying. That means you have to be an FBI agent for 2 years instead of 3 years to screen for HRT. Do not wait until you are 6months out to apply that will set you up for failure. If you are 12-15months within your separation date you can apply with no issues. This video has good intentions, however the information was incorrect in some aspects.

Pretty great advise. Thirty years in local law enforcement here. Ha, and a polygraph examiner. Our application process is four months, minimum. Then dependent on openings. Yes, there are egos everywhere. It's not a problem for me, as I see the former military guys are obviously a product of their environment. Little things for example, "On 12 April 2020 I was" too "When I was trained to clear buildings we did it this way." OK, cool, I understand, but we are HERE NOW. Some guys struggle with the absolute freedom to just go out and do the job, or the broadness of the direction. Give them six months to make that mental shift, and they are freaking awesome. It's just a different world. ... You can't bullshit a bullshitter. A guy that has spent time in a combat roll or a guy that has spent ten years in prison or the guy that has been through SERE. They "know the real." There is no need to even try to bullshit them. Play them straight and with dignity. You will get the same back.

  • @cgsai2008

Excellent video. One thing I would add is avoiding disciplinary issues in the military, especially alcohol related issues. Most guys I knew that served but didn’t hired for federal law enforcement jobs got cut during backgrounds. This includes maxing out that Military Star Card and not paying it for months. Credit issues can also cause you to get cut.

Networking - on business cards, write on the back of the card WHERE you met them, what class, deployment etc. That helps both of you remember how you are connected. I worked for a non-traditional Fed LE agency and we got to work with some SF, NG, Navy Bases, EOD (Oh yes, finding unexplored ordnance good fun). We all enjoyed meeting and learning with each other. KEEP in touch with your network at least every six-12 months, let the person know what you are up to etc. Helps keep you in the loop of what might be coming up at that agency.

I know your channel isn't built around gear and gear reviews but I do think it would be really interesting to hear your thoughts on certain things issued to you and how they are better or worse than equipment available to civilians. Keep up the great work, and I appreciate all you do for everyone. One last question for a video- do you have any freedom in selecting your weapon systems? Ive heard if you make it to a tier 1 unit you can essentially have any rifle you desire, but on a tier 2 level do you have the option to choose between the M4, SCAR, HK416 etc, or do you just get handed a pistol and rifle and you're stuck with that platform for x amount of time?

50 something YO Cop here. Had a vanilla 9 year MP career, been a cop for 21 years so far. Enjoying your channel.
I’m also a former SWAT entry officer and the current commander of my PDs team. Just putting out to your listeners the fact that the VAST majority of LE SWAT teams are part time/additional duty gigs. Full time teams are rare and typically found in major Metro/City PDs. Even there, you are gonna have to (typically) prove your chops as a cop before you get on their team. My PD has varied from a 3 year to 5 year minimum time in service to even try out.
And you are correct unlike the military, SWAT billets can remain filled till a Cop gets promoted off of a Team or retires.
Depending on what State you are looking for LE work in you may have to deal with Civil Service tests and hiring lists too.

I’m going to be realist here, for a certain genre of folks. If anyone, who is going to become a Marine, thinks you can do college simultaneously and finish the degree, think again.
It is almost impossible unless you do 10+ years in service and that’s a maybe. For combat MOS’ Atleast. POGs, depending on MOS, can easily do it.
I got about 21 hours of school done over 4 years. That’s a little less than a year’s worth of school .That’s with TRYING to go to school and having to convince my command plenty of times to let me go. The last 18 hours were only possible because my unit deployed, I stayed back and convinced the SNCOs to let me attend school.
I did a CLEP exam, earned 12 hours. but did not include that in my aforementioned tally.
The following message is for everyone: CLEP exams are the easiest way to get college credit if you’re disciplined. Plus I believe the first clep exam you take, for each subject, should be free to you as active duty. With the more reputable schools you are limited on the amount of CLEP credit you can apply to your degree.
My background was in the infantry. I now hold a Master of Accountancy degree.
    Thanks for the content man.

The CIA had a lot of paramilitary officers during hostilities in Iraq and Afghanistan. Expect hiring for those positions to slow to a trickle now that things have slowed down in the Sandbox. They have about all the paramilitary guys they will need for a while.
The paramilitary people have always been a small percentage of the DO anyway.

Why is it that SF, Seals, Rangers you're all over tv or medias but not the Marines or the Recon/Raiders Marines. I love you, Tim Kennedy, Andy Stumpt and Joko but I would really like to find a channel like yours that is Marines driven. thx.

    • @maxb4210

Marines Raiders haven’t been involved in the SOF community long at all, and haven’t had the time to build as big a reputation like the aforementioned ones. Marine Recon has been around for a while, but they generally get shafted and any real world mission they could do typically goes to another SOF group

I just wanted wanted to go in and get my long tab to open up doors but I learned and realized much is not what it seems. And I was black balled by Pickney's sorry ass. So much did not go the way it was supposed to, and "I myself" screwed myself in several ways too. Shit I might even make a video of "MY story" with details to help others avoid my tragedy. And I'll say this quick, no matter how good you shoot dead center, how many pushups n situps you can do, running is VERY important and I didn't realize that before going in. My legs didnt handle the weight and running at 34 years old going in after decades without running as an adult. do yourself a favor..... RUN and RUCK. or at least walk around with a weighted vest for a good while.
