What happens at 1:20 is extraordinary. That pianissimo passed the stratosphere and became interstellar and must still be traveling somewhere just outside of Milky Way on its way to other galaxies. Even the worst kind of aliens with tentacles and all wouldn't wanna eat us or destroy earth after listening to her pianissimo because it is simply the most beautiful thing ever.

This is so lovely! Like all great singers she has her good and bad moments ( this is one of the great moments I think), but even in her bad moments her voice is grand and exciting! not like the tripe singers give us today.

@lamusicahera I never liked this kind of comments. Gencer sang Lady Macbeth more than any other famous sopranos during her time. Her Leonoras, Gilda, Elenas, Amelia are socond to none! Just listen to her 1960 Macbeth recording! You'll see how big her voice is. She sang Aida at Arena di Verona. A small voiced soprano can't sing there for years, can she? Contrary to your statement Callas' voice is not apropriate for Verdi and many other composers. Though I like them all.

I think Calls is not the singer that Gencer is but Callas just seems to me to have more emotional content. She knew she was not the greatest technician but than in the pop frield Frank Sinatra never was the greatest singer but he could deliver a song and it's meaning more completely than anyone at the time. Even later when he could hardly sing he could put a song over! Southerland was a great singer and could put every note in its place but the emotional content was never there for me and I heard her in 1961 at her best. This opera helps a lot to have a good tenor and mezzo I think as well.
