In 1980 my girlfriend started learning the piano because she loved this song and wanted to be able to play it at will. It was the first song she mastered. She played it at our wedding reception. She played it for our children. I last heard it played, by her request, at her funeral in 2005. I'd nearly forgotten it. Until today.
I danced many times in the kitchen with the love of my life as this played on a scratchy old flip top record player. It was also playing as I said goodbye see you later babe that last time. I still play it in the kitchen at least once a week and we dance.
Frank Mills wrote this piece for his daughter who was sick, it was never meant to be released into the public........but fate stepped in and gave us one of the most joyfull pieces of music ever written
*correction* “When I composed the song, I was searching for a title. One day my young daughter came to me with a broken music box to mend. There was a little dancer who popped up and spun around on a pedestal. Her arm was broken off. As I looked at it I said, “That’s what the song is, it’s the “Music Box Dancer!” It was intended to be released but it was the B side to an intended single and the B side was played instead and became a hit.
In the late 70's, before home computers, cell phones or even cordless phones my mom and I were having the mother daughter struggles. When I realized I had been in the wrong I called our local radio station in Lompoc and requested they play this to my mom to say I was sorry. My mom heard the dedication and cried....my mom was NOT a crier. It became one of hers and still mine's favorite. She died suddenly 4 years later at a very young age. Her passing shook our entire family especially my father and baby sister. The church allowed this song to be played at her memorial......I'm so thankful my mom and I had time to iron out our differences (or should say our likeness) before her sudden departure. Hug your parents every chance you get!!
My mommy asked me to come home to help her when she had cancer and I love her and she said I was her best friend and the only person who understands her and we watched television show about basketball and held hands and she died from cancer 25 years ago by her second husband and he woke me up that morning to say goodbye to my mom. She said sorry to me and I love her i said she didn't need to be sorry because she did her best and I love her so much. I was always injured and disabled and I got to be with my mom very much because of that so I have to stay somewhat grateful that we had some time together 💞
@@HopeLaFleur1975 Thank you for your reply. I hope your daughter comes to the realization s I did and why frictions happen between mothers and daughters. I wish I could reach out to her and all "kids/adults" and help them find a way to heal. Again thank you - you are in my thoughts and I'm sending you loving/healing thoughts.
My late husband loved this song from the first time he heard it. God called him home on 19 July, 2009 but this song will forever remind me of him and his joy for life...
I know words are wholly inadequate, but they're all I have: Please accept my deepest condolences. I hope you hold out hope, one day, for a joyful reunion, and I hope that the memories the song stirs are happy ones. Warm Regards and Best Wishes, @Kenngo1969
Ok,I consider myself a TOUGH son of a gun but THIS classic takes me back to my youth and tugs at my heart BIG TIME!! BLASTING THIS LOUD AND PROUD IN 2022!!!!
My Favorite song in the late 70's 💗 I was very young and saved my money to buy the record and an actual music box that played this song. Brings Me Joy!!
This song.... when this song came out my youngest daughter was only1 1/2 - 2 years old. One day I danced with her in my arms when it came in. After that EVERY single time it came on she would run to me to dance with her. It brings back so many memories of that each time I hear it. She even played it at her wedding. Thank you Mr. Mills for giving us those memories. 💟💟💟💟
This song is part of one of my favororite memories. My father was an amazing musician, he was a band teacher and played almost any instrument. I bought this song on a 45 record, came home a played it for him because I thought it was just beautiful. He listened to the song twice and went to the piano and played the song. I was amazed. Always thought my dad was the smartest man to ever live!!!
I play by ear, but I could not sit down and just play that song. My uncle used to be that way with the violin..he listed to La Paloma twice and could play it.
And it Was the B Side of Frank Mills Single...a Radio Disc Jockey happened To Flip The Record over And Play the B Side... And The Rest is History. It Hit Number 3 on Billboards Hot 100 if i remember Correctly
My grandmother absolutely loved this song! I remember when I found it on TH-cam for the first time and her face lit up when I played it for her! She passed away last year and I think about her every day. Hearing this song brings back so many memories. I wish beautiful people had more time on this Earth 🌍
We are about the same age. My wife and I were newly weds. We had noTV, just a good stereo. My wife fell in love with Music Box Dancer and still loves it today.
When my daughter was born prematurely (43 years ago and not expected to survive )I would play this song to her while in the NICU I could tell she enjoyed it and now it’s one of my favorite songs!!!
I was 2-3 years old when I heard this song... it was from an ice cream truck. I can barely remember, but I know that my mother would always go out to the truck and buy me a popsicle. But this is the particular song that I remember from my infancy. I am still young at 15 years old, but i can’t help but cry when I listen to this song.... so many moments with my mother brought back. When my mom gets mad at me and me at her, I usually go to my room and listen to this song. It reminds me of the moments we shared together when I was a baby, and it makes me relax and it just makes me love my mother more and more. For 12 years I have wondered what this song’s name was. I would always search up ice cream truck songs on TH-cam to see if this song would pop up, but it wouldn’t. That was until July 16 of this year that I found it casually, and I listened to it... and it just made my heart sink. It brought back so many memories to the point that i cried... Life goes by in a flash...I love you
This one takes me back more than 30 years. I remember my late Grandpa playing this on the piano. I'm reminded of him every time I hear this. I love you, Grandpa Bob, and miss you every day!
When I was 3 or 4 years old, my dad bought my mom a jewelry box shaped like a tiny grand piano. When you opened it, the wind-up mechanism would start up, and play this song. I used to break into my parent's bedroom around 5 years of age, and play this song, wind it up again, and play it, over, and over, and over again. This song brings incredible childhood memories back.
My little girl danced to this in her recital. I think of her at age 5 on stage when I hear this. She's grown now and has a little ballerina of her own...
oh my goodness praise the lord yall have such beautiful comments about this song n here comes another one ... i was about 9 or 10 yrs old when i heard this song for the first time n now im 50 yrs old n like one comeent mentioned he heard this song when he was 13 n now hes 72 or 3 n hes still loves this song as much today as he did back then ... well i cary that same memory n feeling about this song ... i wish there were more song writers like frank mills cuz this man is definetly touched by God himself to bring out such beauty n a song ... n he is no doubt serounded by his angels ... God bless all my family n friends
I remember this so well .my dads favorite song . back before internet and all the hussel bussel..back when things were laid back and alot less stressful lol.
riding in the back of my parents candy apple red Plymouth on a hot summers day with the windows down in the mid to late 70's .. wishing this song would never end :)
:) happy to hear it again when i was little grandpa played it for us and we danced around the living room :) u can only think about the good memories and not the bad I understand he is in a better place now, walking with Jesus
I learned to play this song on the piano when I was a kid. I'm 43 now & today is the first time I looked this song up & heard it since when I was a kid. The second I heard it, it all came back to me! I remembered every bit of it, as if it were yesterday. Such a beautiful song. Can't wait to share this with my kids. Thank you for making such beautiful music!
I had totally forgot about this song for the last 36 yrs or so, until recently I heard it again somewhere and it brought back the memory of when I was 3 or 4 and I'd come home after preschool and I had this about 3ft x 3ft x 1ft "suitcase" sized record player in my room. I'd drag it out from underneath my bed into the middle of the room and listen to this song on a 45 for what seemed like all day. It's funny how hearing a song again can suddenly bring back a 36 or 37 year old memory you never even knew existed.
Thanks for sharing; it is nice for me to learn how others feel about a song that I like so much. I was in my 20s when this came out and felt so full of life and strong...
When I was a child, about 6, I was in ballet and I remember the older girls practicing to this song. I have loved it all 40 years of my life. I have several music boxes, all with this tune. My children now play them and play them and play them. Thank you for posting and letting me reminisce my memories and create new ones with my children!
My great aunt had a jewelry box and when you lifted the lid a tiny ballerina popped up and twirled around to this tune, I could listen to it for hours and never get tired of it....ah youth!!!!
I think this is the first time I've heard this since the '80s; just was stuck in my head all these years and I had to look for it. I'm almost 58 and it's as good as I remembered....but what memories, though.
I just love this song, first heard it when my sons were very young. My oldest son died almost 7 yrs ago & I lay it when I thought k about him. It just brings joy to me!
LOVE this song! Always have, always will! I was young when it came out and it brings back memories as well as uplifts and gives me joy still today! 🥰🎶💃🏼
Amazing how your taste in music changes as you get older. Beginning to appreciate all the songs my parents/gran parents played when i was very young. This piece of music is just simply awesome.Close your eyes and troubles disappear and long past family members are with you once more. Thank you for this memory blast x
It's so beautiful, I loved this song already when I was a child. Some days ago I heard it in the radio and today I looked it up on the internet and found it here. I think, this song is timeless.
oh my god this is what heaven sounds like. whenever ihear this piece ifeel like ive died and gone to heaven where its full of love flowers fresh grass tall majestic trees sparkling waters beautiful people and cool sunshine
Wow. So cool when I read what you posted as I too feel the same way. Read this while you listen to this song and let yourself imagine it I Lost my 16 year old boy three years ago. Since I have been on a personal direct quest to understand eternal life as I know he is in heaven. When I hear this song I see the joy of all those who enter into heaven at the moment of death only to instantly realize there is no death and by the grace of Christ now enter into a kingdom controlled by God where life is everlasting, joy unspeakable and peace beyond understanding overwhelm us to tears. All pain is GONE. No more hurt but only honest pure love and caring everywhere I see people enter with this song playing into a beaituful park like setting full of activity - children playing and dancing everywhere A few on swings hanging from giant beautiful trees - a big ring of children circling Jesus as they dance and smile ear to ear with Jesus slowly turning while looking at each of them with pure love and a smile of Joy on His face because His love wants all to have that exact overflowing joy. While the song plays and children dance and run around others of all races and tongues on the side watch and all smile and laugh as they too join into the song and the flow of joy. As the song continues I see a group of boys and girls enter my view in a line while they each are dancing to the joy of the song and the life. I see a boy in the line doing a funny dance differnt then most just having a good time expressing himself in love and joy. Angels are on the ground and in the air swaying smiling and some have their arms around people. Others dance like no one has ever seen as they twirl in a incredible bliss. Jesus is the center of it all. My son is there with the younger kids and has one on his back and twirling a little girl. The music is beautiful and everyone is full of love and joy. That's what heaven will be like- Some songs were created by divine inspiration evidenced by what the song does inside people. Heaven is real Life hear is short Prepare and experience what is so wonderful it will repay for all the suffering and hardship 10000 times over. Love is real You can feel it in this song Parents share the song with your kids Play it when the kids are doing homework and grab your wife unexpected and dance with her in the living room in front of them. It doesn't matter how bad of a dancer you are. That's not the point. Do it to the love and joy of the song. Don't say anything just smile and laugh. The kids will stop and be amazed. Guaranteed smiles on their faces and they will never forget the moment of joy and love you just showed them how to live and experience it
Thank you your kind. My son was always mature for his age. He was a true leader as everyone lived him as he was loving yet strong in all the right ways. I say this because now I see the bigger picture and see him jumping ahead and finishing the race early and winning I lay at night every night without exception and silently weep as my heart yearns for him but more so Christ who is taking care of him
yes Claire its such a beautiful piece of music isn't it and all so true with what you have said in the comments there this music is one of the best pieces of music ever. and so sorry for your loss there Robert stalets my heart goes out to you there Robert.
Thank you Mr. Mills for the memories, I use to play this song on 1 of the little jukeboxes on a table top in a café where My late husband & I went to eat. I still love it to this day!
My grandmother has this little music box with a ballerina. When you'd crank the side of it, it would play this song. This will always remind me of my grandmother. Decades old.
i remember the story behind this song. It was meant for easy listening stations and a copy was accidentally sent to a pop station and the rest is history. Love this song. I was in 8th grade when it came out.
Hello to you. Interesting story. A similar incident occurred with "Perhaps Love" written by John Denver. As I heard it, a radio station's owner's wife was a big fan of Placido Domingo who, at the station owner's request, recorded this in a duet with John Denver on the type of audiotape that could, at the time, only be played by radio broadcasters. So, the station played it once for the wife to hear; the station was deluged with phone calls asking about it and an accidental pop hit duet with an opera star was born. Best Wishes to you.
It was also picked up by WNGE tv in Nashville and used as a closing theme on their newscasts... People called the station asking what the name of it was, then started calling radio stations asking to hear it.
I was 7 years old and the radio would play this song every morning at 7 am. I'd get up and start making breakfast for my brothers and start laying out slices of bread for PB&J sandwiches, all while this song played in the background. I'm 54 years old now and this song still guides me through my mornings. I've even made it my default ringtone...
I am 75 years of age dance to the song many times as a youngster had a music box made with a picture of me dancing decoupaged on it and played this song as a Mother's Day gift for my mom at the time many years ago
I have been looking for this piece for over 35 years - first heard it at age 11 in France, where it was the theme on a morning radio show. Loved it then, made me cry to hear it again now - a beautiful piece in its simplicity and child-like wonder. So happy to be re-acquainted!
My Dad loved this one. When it first came out he heard it on my radio ,that was radio city in Liverpool, it was a favourite of Norman Thomas, he used it to talk over . My dad wrote a letter to him asking what it was and he replied Music Box Dancer by Frank Mills. We managed to get a copy on 45 record. It has been great to hear it again brought back great memories.
Have loved this song for many years. Over the past 4 years some fantastic families in my neighborhood in Thornhill Ontario Canada have put on a breathtaking Christmas light show with thousands of lights on their properties. The lights dance to the Christmas song, Hark how the Bells and even better. Music Box Dancer. People come from all over to drive through this area to listen to and see this. The music is accessed on your car radio. I go at least 20 times during the month and a half they are on.
My fondest memory of this is as a child hearing it play quite often on the radio when it came out. My mom would have the radio on as she got ready to take me to school. Very sentimental memories of a simpler time especially now that my mom is no longer here.
My grade 2 teacher played this for us on one of those suitcase turntables back in '86. That's one of my earliest memories of this beautifully happy song
I remember when i was just little, my sister was a ballerina & she used this in one of her school dance shows.. I got so sick of hearing it as she played it over & over again practicing her act in the garage, now it's a sweet memory of her for she is gone now.. We love & miss you Sheryl ❤️, Rest well Siss..
April 1979, I was driving across the country to join my husband who had taken a job five months earlier while I stayed behind to close our business and house. The drive was long and made longer by my anxiety to see my husband again. I turned on the car radio and was delighted and cheered by the joyful sound of Mr. Mills song. which was played often during that five day trek. I am thankful for whoever made it public.
Love love love this song. Takes me back to my parents , happy carefree days, and when the radio stayed on one station and played softly in the background while we ate our home cooked breakfast as a family. Wow how life has changed.
Yes..... this song has the unbelievable power to uplift my mood no matter what... thank God to Frank Mills for bringing the music of angels down to earth!!!
When I saw your profile picture I had to listen to the song to lighten up my day Jees is the profile picture I’m not trying to be mean or anything but like wow sick dude
This song will always hold the most special memories for me. I remember hearing for the first time with my ice skating coach and mom, and being told "with this song you will win." I remember loving the fact that I was free to show my love for skating freely. I remember the beautiful pale pink costume my mother spend many late night sewing for me, and how she and my coach never doubted for a minute that I was going to be walk away that day the winner, and sure enough I did. My mom still has my medal from that day, even though the costume was long ago given away. Next to the medal, a picture of a skinny lanky awkward and goofy looking little 9 year old girl that was told for the very first time "you looked so beautiful."
Does anybody feel highly nostalgic listening to this? I remember hearing this as a little kid. I'm 36 and wish it were back then. This truly takes you on the ultimate trip down memory lane. 😊❤️
I remember when I was still about 5 or 6, my grandfather's car had a cassette player, and had this song on a piano cassette. When I first listened to it, I LOVED IT, and so I kept rewinding it to listen to it again and again and again. Until now, I still love it. Memories. Now I am 12, still young, but love this.
I first heard this song came out, which was back in 1979. (was 6 years old at the time and now I am 41) and I still love this song. Back when I first heard this song, I was in my landlords apartment, (she babysat me in the early morning hours before I went to school) and I heard it every day about the same time in the morning which was around 7:AM
Paul W Actually you're both kind of correct. Yes, this was recorded and released on an album in 1974, but that album didn't do very well. It wasn't until 4 years later, when Mr Mills renewed his contract with Polydor Records, they wanted to release a single. They put MBD on as B-side. When the single was sent out to the Canadian Easy Listening stations, it was accidentally sent to an AM Pop station in Ottawa City. The station manager played the A-side & couldn't figure why his station got the record, so he played the B-side (MBD) & liked it. His deejay gave it extensive playtime & the rest is, as they say, history. At which point the label released it as a hit in Canada that year & everywhere else, including the US, the next. So it was released on an album in 1974, but became a hit single in 1978-79!

Listen to the opening music from the movie "The Boys From Brazil" written by Jerry Goldsmith. Once you hear it you can't forget it.
Ozwarlock0 YES!!

Yep! I was born in 1970, and I have the 45 of it lol.. I would play it over and over and over again
riding in the back of my parents candy apple red Plymouth on a hot summers day with the windows down in the mid to late 70's .. wishing this song would never end :)

Thank yoi for learning to play it!! Thank you for showing it to your chilsren. Please teach one of them. Fantastic.
It's funny how hearing a song again can suddenly bring back a 36 or 37 year old memory you never even knew existed.
wavebye1 That's amazing! Music is so special like that isn't it? It can bring back memories long since forgotten.
I’ve NEVERforgit about this song since I was young
Thanks for sharing; it is nice for me to learn how others feel about a song that I like so much. I was in my 20s when this came out and felt so full of life and strong...
Awesome! I remember those days also!
I had the same 'record player'!
When I was a child, about 6, I was in ballet and I remember the older girls practicing to this song. I have loved it all 40 years of my life. I have several music boxes, all with this tune. My children now play them and play them and play them. Thank you for posting and letting me reminisce my memories and create new ones with my children!
I love the music box theme. Since I was a kid, this song brings back happy memories. Of my family and all the wonderful times.
My great aunt had a jewelry box and when you lifted the lid a tiny ballerina popped up and twirled around to this tune, I could listen to it for hours and never get tired of it....ah youth!!!!
Delicious to hear for the ear, for the heart and the soul.
My granny took me to the Curzon cinema Belfast in the 70s and that b music was played. I love it CosbyCURZON
Im a young 59 and this tune STILL makes me cry lol...happy tears ...very happy tears 🥰🥰🥰🙈👌👌
Hugs.
One of my all-time favorites. I never get tired of listening to this. Thank you Frank Mills for a beautiful piece of music!
Read this while you listen to this song and let yourself imagine it
I Lost my 16 year old boy three years ago. Love is real You can feel it in this song
Parents share the song with your kids
Play it when the kids are doing homework and grab your wife unexpected and dance with her in the living room in front of them. It doesn't matter how bad of a dancer you are. That's not the point. Do it to the love and joy of the song. Don't say anything just smile and laugh. The kids will stop and be amazed. Guaranteed smiles on their faces and they will never forget the moment of joy and love you just showed them how to live and experience it
Robert Stalets I’m sorry for your loss.
Thank you your kind. My son was always mature for his age. He was a true leader as everyone lived him as he was loving yet strong in all the right ways. I say this because now I see the bigger picture and see him jumping ahead and finishing the race early and winning I lay at night every night without exception and silently weep as my heart yearns for him but more so Christ who is taking care of him
yes Claire its such a beautiful piece of music isn't it and all so true with what you have said in the comments there this music is one of the best pieces of music ever. and so sorry for your loss there Robert stalets my heart goes out to you there Robert.
another nice piece of music from frank mills that is also on you tube here called peter piper.
I heard this on XM radio in the car yesterday then tonight I was trying to remember the name of it so I could listen to it again, glad I found it.
I heard it this afternoon. Had forgotten about the song, but the tears came rushing back
Thank you Mr. Mills for the memories, I use to play this song on 1 of the little jukeboxes on a table top in a café where My late husband & I went to eat. I still love it to this day!
My stepmom Julie Knaus on her Birthday Mothers Day and Easter we dance to this song Thanks Frank Mills
My grandmother has this little music box with a ballerina. When you'd crank the side of it, it would play this song. This will always remind me of my grandmother. Decades old.
When I was little I was fortunate enough to go to a frank mills concert in a place near my hometown
i remember the story behind this song.
I was in 1st grade and still love it. 🙂
im in 8th grade toooooo wowowowowow my teacher plays it goood maaaaan
It was also picked up by WNGE tv in Nashville and used as a closing theme on their newscasts... People called the station asking what the name of it was, then started calling radio stations asking to hear it.
Love love love this song. Loved it as a teen and now as a 50 something.
***** Now that's old!
50 what?
My mother would play this often when I was young...it always made me happy! ❤️
I am old and slow. But when I hear this, I am young again and so full of life.
This is such a beautiful song. 🎼
Yes.
An absolute classic. A masterpiece. One of the best pieces of music ever recorded.
I have been looking for this piece for over 35 years - first heard it at age 11 in France, where it was the theme on a morning radio show. Loved it then, made me cry to hear it again now - a beautiful piece in its simplicity and child-like wonder. So happy to be re-acquainted!
So pure and beautiful brings tears to my eyes!
It has been great to hear it again brought back great memories.
have not heard this song in years, look here to find it. Always loved this.
this was mine and my girlfriends song when we first started dating
Have loved this song for many years. Over the past 4 years some fantastic families in my neighborhood in Thornhill Ontario Canada have put on a breathtaking Christmas light show with thousands of lights on their properties. The lights dance to the Christmas song, Hark how the Bells and even better. Music Box Dancer. People come from all over to drive through this area to listen to and see this. The music is accessed on your car radio. I go at least 20 times during the month and a half they are on.
How beautiful
Truly beautiful song.
My fondest memory of this is as a child hearing it play quite often on the radio when it came out. My mom would have the radio on as she got ready to take me to school. Very sentimental memories of a simpler time especially now that my mom is no longer here.
We have the same memories. Good ones.
My grade 2 teacher played this for us on one of those suitcase turntables back in '86. That's one of my earliest memories of this beautifully happy song
This was on of my Mom's favorite songs. And I'll always miss her
I remember when i was just little,
my sister was a ballerina & she used this in one of her school dance shows..
I got so sick of hearing it as she played it over & over again practicing her act in the garage,
now it's a sweet memory of her for she is gone now..
We love & miss you Sheryl ❤️,
Rest well Siss..
Beautiful!
I have always loved that song. From the first time I heard it, back in 1979, when it first premiered on the charts. I still love that song.
One of the most beautiful pieces of piano work I have ever heard it just makes me happy.
Played at the birth of my first, a Special Soul given breathe by Papa, Father God, Thank you❤
Timeless magical gift to humanity. There is a word in some language to capture the feeling that this piece evokes.
For those who didn't know, this was written by Canadian artist Frank Mills in 1974. Just another reason to love Canada.
Cool,Canadian TLB,from love,fromthese frosty days of London,England.
We like you guys, we just can’t stand your dictator….we have one, too and he’s an idiot

This song is so good !! I just can't get away from it !!!
Love love love this song. Takes me back to my parents , happy carefree days, and when the radio stayed on one station and played softly in the background while we ate our home cooked breakfast as a family. Wow how life has changed.
Music Box dancer is the best. Very catchy. Love it. !!!
This music has made any day I've ever had sad, picked me right up to a good day!!

This is the MOST wonderful song. It might be my favorite!
I had a brief career in radio and I used to play this for my Grandmother . She loved this song . ❤
Next to the medal, a picture of a skinny lanky awkward and goofy looking little 9 year old girl that was told for the very first time "you looked so beautiful."
with this song i will beat you
Was used for a golf programme called ",A Round With Alliss" in which a celebrity played a few holes with Peter Alliss
Perfection 🥰
Must be the most beautiful music ever written.
this song reminds me of the ice cream truck when I was a kid fond memories

Good times
I agree with your comment so much that for half a second I thought I wrote it!
We always called this "The ice-cream truck song" until today.
That might be because this song is a very commonly used ice cream truck song.
simple tune but creative, energic song! I never forget this song!
Takes me back in the late 80s. Happy to be listening in June 2022. Heard it when I was 5 and 6. It really warms my heart.

One of f my all time favorites. Absolutley love it.
Does anybody feel highly nostalgic listening to this? I remember hearing this as a little kid. I'm 36 and wish it were back then. This truly takes you on the ultimate trip down memory lane. 😊❤️
I played this 45 so much that I wore it out. Gosh, good memories here! It'll be a download for my iPod tomorrow!!
Paul W it actually came out in 1974,had to check because I was a little boy and I am 47 now.
alecamal Oh really? I always thought came out in 1979. Well I think I learned something today.
The first time I heard this tune was on the tv show "Bumblebunkers". I still love this tune.
