Unrealistic and scary, The mother shouold have never have never left her child with the cold hearted dad. In the real world the mother's claim of instructing the heroine to take the child would probably not have held up. So much depends of the laws of a particular country. In some the father's rights are absolute. While that is not true in the US, the legal issues would truely be messy. Just sounds like the writer just imagined it without checking on any legalities.
