New Kingston Uptown The New York Of Jamaica Full Walking Tour 2021 - The area now known as New Kingston Jamaica started out as the Knutsford Park Race Track. It was 85 acres of land from Knutsford Boulevard to Oxford Road where horse racing and polo matches were held. When the race track was closed down in the mid-sixties, the area remained as a large, dusty vacant lot on which learner drivers practiced.
In the 1600s Port Royal was the capital of trade and the largest residential area of the Island. In 1692 when a massive earthquake destroyed Port Royal, the settlers and residents of the area had little desire to rebuild and thus realized the value of the land across the harbour known as the Liguanea Plain.
At the time of the earthquake, there were around 8 or 9 houses on some 530 acres of land in the Liguanea Plain.
Immigrants gradually started to migrate to Kingston and it continued to grow until January 1907, when a second earthquake followed by a catastrophic fire that lead it to a sudden halt of development. Much of Downtown Kingston was destroyed. Almost 1500 people died and over a million dollars worth of property damage was incurred. Trying to recover and rebuild, people wanted to move out of the old city and they looked to the merchants who owned much of the land bordering the city. They were sitting on gold mines.

Brother you enlighten me, I lived in Kingston all my life, travel through New Kingston all the time even stayed at the Pegasus for a week, but never took time to look at all those lovely buildings, didn't even realize there where so many ,,thanks a lot.

@@JAMAICAWALKBY Kingston/New Kingston is where Jamaica's taxes and private sector profits all end up via central government/national head office presence..only Mobay is far away enough (from Kingston) and commercially big enough (as the urban centre of Western Jamaica and much of the North Coast) to have a "New Kingston" styled development. .

I can recall as a teenager growing up in liguanea whenever i went to new kgn for any reason i felt like i left jamaica and went to another country ...we would go to new kgn shopping ctr for no reason ..just to hang out and feel line we living the life.....memories 🇨🇦🇯🇲

My favorite place in JA,,from Kenya with love😎...Stayed at Sunset inn Hotel,altamount(sic) court for a week and N.K felt like home(Nairobi),,Miss the walks to get Jerk Chicken at Island Grill,a few more steps to Scotia bank to withdraw some money...taking a detour at 18 St. Lucia Crescent,,throwing trash at those bins written,"Nuh Dirty Jamaica"..Amazing people

Probably very expensive to live in new Kingston. I would live in nk . I heard there are plans to make new Kingston jamaica first smart city . I hope they will construct the ascent @ the oxford should be a 28 storey smart building as well as belmont 1. Which should be a 9 storey smart building on belmont rd . Those will be a great addition to the new Kingston area hopefully they follow thru on those planned developments. New Kingston could definitely allow for some additional buildout of its skyline. And be transformed into the Manhattan of the Caribbean officially.

It's more like the Miami of Jamaica and NOT New York City ("NYC"). By the way, New York City is a city in New York. New York is the state; New York City, which has 5 boroughs- the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island- is the city. In any event, New Kingston, Jamaica more closely resembles Miami, or a smaller city in America, than NYC. The skyscrapers in NYC- I know cuz I live and work there- are monstrous.

I disagree. I work and live in Manhattan. You can EASILY get lost in Manhattan. Plus, the buildings in Manhattan are more modern, MUCH taller, larger, and more abundant. The streets are also MUCH wider and more complicated/complex.
