Wonderful!. I was there too, and we have black and white photos of myself and my mother by the danger barrel. On my way home from school, I used to join the other children making slides on the ice. It was so funny seeing the swans trying to land on the ice!
This is amazing, I was just looking at old black and white photos I have with myself and family on the frozen river. I was at school then - great fun for a youngster.
My mum was only two at the time of the big freeze in 1962-1963. I was amazed that films of the winter scenes were known, and this was brought up on the news due to the recent winters we had.
I was there too. I'm sure that there was a photo in the Cheshire Observer that showed a small lorry driving on the ice near the suspension bridge, looked for it online but not found it. Memory makes things up, perhaps. But I do remember riding my motorbike (Velocette Venom) on ice-rutted roads for a month or two.
I was there. A Triumph Herald drove past me on the River. There was a boat slipway at Sandy Lane where cars could get onto the river. Good to see it again. Not sure that my children ever really believed me when I said this had happened.
Excellent piece of local history . I remember it snowed on Boxing Day and the snow was still around in March. I even fell through the ice near to one of the landing stages,!
