In March 1859 thousands of ryots in Bengal refused to grow indigo. As the rebellion spread, ryots refused to pay rents to the planters, and attacked indigo factories armed with swords and spears, bows and arrows. Women turned up to fight with pots, pans and kitchen implements. Those who worked for the planters were socially boycotted, and the gomasthas - agents of planters - who came to collect rent were beaten up. Ryots swore they would no longer take advances to sow indigo nor be bullied by the planters’ lathiyals - the lathi-wielding strongmen maintained by the planters. .

Nil Darpan or The Indigo Planting Mirror was a Bengali play written by Dinabandhu Mitra in 1858-'59. The drama was written in the context of social agitation in Bengal, known as the Indigo Revolt. The play examines the treatment of the Indian peasantry or ryots by the indigo planters. It was first published in 1860.

Sir I have know about the revolt of 1857 in the previous chapter you have said that the policy of subsidiary alliance in which when company put subsidiary alliance policy on awadh it put an argument and that is the company obliged by duty and their duty is free the people from the misgovernment of nawab so , after this argument the people of awadh is enlarged and became part of revolt of 1857 .
