The Kanab UT - Lake Powell - Monument Valley area is so beautiful. Many of the greatest early westerns were filmed as backdrops in the area. Even in B&W you could see how scenic the area is. It may not have been "Dodge City" but if Gunsmoke had been filmed in KS, Matt Kitty & Doc would have never stayed around for 20yrs Festus may have, cuz he grew up about 100mi west of the real DC on the prairies of eastern CO
I saw this set used in only 2 Gunsmoke episodes. One with Buddy Ebson called Drago and the other had Festus. Neither had the set as Dodge City. I saw an episode of the Macahans starring James Arness use this set.
Now that’s a scam I wished I’d thunk of!! Take people to some broke down barns and tell em that’s where Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and 3 Mules for Sister Sarah was filmed. Awful smart!!! Probably get $50 a head!!!!
They did a lot of they're filming there if you have any questions why don't you ask pure my pictures. It's true it was filmed there a lot they fly back and forth from Utah to their homes

The beginning years of the show were filmed outdoors (more expensive I'm sure, just so much better visually) its obvious when you watch them.
in the 50s at Paramount studios as the closing credits read at the very end the show later moved to cbs studio center to the end of it's 20 year run.
I thought it was filmed mostly in LA
