- How to program a Honeywell Ademco Vista 20p output trigger to control a garage door.
NOTE: As some have mentioned, a complete lose of power to the system (AC and DC battery fail) will cause a pulse to the trigger contacts on power up which may cause the relay to trip. This could in turn cause your garage to open. Some guys found a work around for this with additional equipment. I have multiple battery backups and a generator so not an issue in my install. Work on your system at your own risk.
10 years later and it's still the only video I can find with info on the Vista series output triggers !
Man! Im a DSC guy, its a very helpful video (even after 8yrs) especially for me who just started learning honeywell😬 Thank you.
Thanks for the great video. Followed your instructions except I used the toggle function 04 to toggle the relay to turn Insteon lights on and off. Thanks for taking the time to put this togeter.
Al
I love the sticky note covering the ADT logo on the keypad. good job on the video.
+scottp104 Thanks for watching!
Super helpful, clear and paced just right - thanks a million!
Thanks a million . You were very great for explain the system programming and detail were wonderful and easy to follow. God bless you ✊🙏
Thanks a lot buddy! That means a lot coming from you considering how well you produce your alarm videos! Looking forward to more...hope you have some in the making.
Thanks zim this helped me reset my 4 wire smoke detectors I've always used a 4204 relay, I knew this could be done through the triggers but never attempted it.
Great Work Dear....
Lot of Learning with ADI and Honeywell did not teach us here in INDIA...
Thanks
Yes, that is exactly how I would do it. Keep in mind that will be it for the onboard triggers as you only have 2 available on the system. You could add a relay board (#4204) that would expand the system to 4 triggers if you ever need them down the road.
Dude you have put together great
videos on the Vista panel. Please make some more!!!!
+Steven Kirchner Thanks, planning on making more soon.
Do you have a model number for the SPST relay that you were using? I have looked and cannot find anything as simple as the one you showed. thanks.
i work installing these things and i just learned something new, great Video!
Great, thanks for watching
how do you program same thing but just for the 5834 remote?
+linkintiger I believe you would set the zone type to 23 (no alarm response) instead of 66 (function key) You'd then program zone type 23 to the wireless remote button you want to use. I think the manual calls those buttons loop numbers.
Thanks zimsjeep....get it a try. I only need these two triggers for the time being. But I see what you're saying about the 4204 board if I need more in the future.
Nice Job! Very informative...I appreciate your efforts in creating the video & posting!
I have been trying to figure out a marco for function key C and D so when I get in the truck and back out of the garage, I press C on the phone app to shut the garage door and arms the house. Then when I return I press D on the app and the garage door opens and disarms house.
Question: I need to add more wired zones so I was going to pick up the 4229 to have more zones plus relays. How would you wire the 4229 to the onboard trigger pins? It looks like the directions say to wire the red, black, green, yellow to screw terminals 4,5,6,7 and nothing in regards to wiring to the trigger pins with that wiring harness?
Great video! Very clear.
I have an old Vista 30+ that has been working for about 20 years and would like to change for a new system with phone module integrated (or capable) and to use my wireless sensors. Can you advice? Would you have a video showing how to set it up?
I’m Trying to power a 12V H/S through the Aux PWR Output on The Panel…. Screws 3/4?? It looks like it should be 4/5
question: I face a problem on programming on board trigger 18.Trigger 17 is working ok on and off for my dialler and programmed it to change when burglary. Now trigger 18 I have programmed it for various modes but when the event happens the trigger changes but stays on for very long time..i have only set it for 2 seconds on/off but somehow it doesn't follow the 2 seconds...it stays on when the event happens for very long time 10 minutes...maybe
hello, i am trying to control two relays that will activate 120 volt green and red lights to mirror alarm status.armed(red) and Green(ready) I am not sure where i should be connecting to the vista 20 in order the mirror the lights on the keypads.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
I have Vista SE 20 giving message communication fault 1 might be this is due to Phone line is not connected four wires of phone are connected in PCB but difficult to find out other end , I am using comsat internet line and did not find any phone wire in router, I don't how other end is connected , can you help me ?
Excellent video, very helpful, please keep posting, Thx
+Darrell McKinney, Sr. Thanks, I have some more alarm videos in the works
Can this new function "D" be use as open and close and use Ademco 5822T to monitor and trigger ? Also can I use my keyfob to open and close Garage door ?
+zimsjeep Can you make a video of the 6160V and the 6150 in action? Why do you need to cover the ADT logo on the 6160V?
Hi Zimsjeep...great video. If I have two garage doors and want to do this can I use pin 15 for the second door and use pin 17 for the first door?
I am thinking of trying this on my Vista 20P panel. I was wondering if I could use phone wires for both the garage door zone wires and the wires going to the opener. I have a phone jack in my garage. We discontinued the hard wired phone service years ago. The telephone line has four wires and runs down into my basement right near my alarm panel. It would be easier than running a new line. Also, after reading peoples reply to the video I am a little leery running the wires to my garage opener because they said if the power went out the garage would open when it came back on. Is there a way to prevent that? If not I might look for a Zwave solution since a have a veralite unit thats connect to my vista 20P panel by a AD2USB.
Thanks for the video. I setup and programmed my panel just as you described in the video. My question is how to I assign the star on my keyfob (5834) to open the garage door along with the D button on the panel?
On a side note, I couldnt run a cable to the garage door because it does not use a contact closure to close the door. It is a Chamberlain with MyQ. So, I just used on of the remotes and use the relay to short the pins for the garage door. I still plan to put a sensor to check if the garage door is open.
thanx
Update: I was able to figure out how to accomplish my question. I followed the video in getting the D key to open my garage door. To add the ability to use the keyfob was actually simple. First you must find out what zone number the keyfob is using for loop #1. Mine was 61. Next I went into *80 menu and created a second function. I programmed the second function to be activated by a zone number (in my case 61), the output action was to close for 2 seconds, then output number 17. I saved it, ran outside and hit the loop #1 (star on my 5834 keyfob) and the garage opened.
Can you please elaborate on how you used one of the remotes to control the garage door? I have a chamberlain with myQ as well. thanks.
Bryan Belmonte I figured it out. Thank you.
Bryan Belmonte Can you post how you figured out how to configure a remote loop to open/close the garage door, please? Thanks
Clint VanRoekel Basically, I soldered the existing wires that came from the alarm control Box (that used to connect to my old opener motor) to the remote control of my new Chamberlain opener.
Please note that I have a remote that the alarm company gave me to arm/disarm my alarm and on this remote, it has a button to open/close my garage. I wanted it to work like it did before. It won't work when I just wired it directly to my new Chamberlain opener motor.
With that said, here is what I did. I located the wires that came from the control panel box to my old garage door opener motor. Then I opened one of the remote controls for the new Chamberlain Opener and exposed the board. After searching the internet, I figured out which points to solder the wires to the board. (I touched the leads to the points on the board to test before soldering it so I knew it worked). Once confirmed, I soldered the wires directly to these points. I tested again and it worked flawlessly. I then enclosed the remote control board back in the case it came in. I then hid the soldered remote inside one the light covers of the opener motor just to keep things neat.
The only drawback to this is the the battery on the soldered remote will run out in the future but all I have to do is replace the battery and I am good to go again.
I hope this helps.
Thank you so much for the video. Great explanation.
This also applies to the ADT SafeWatchPro3000
Yes, same exact system. ADT slaps that badge on it to make it look like something special. It’s really not and is all vista components
What type of relay is used?
Where can I purchase the spst relay and standard keypad connector described and pictured in video?
Try ebay for the keypad connector - or you can buy a damaged keypad on the cheap and take the keypad connector off it.
Relay- try Radio Shack or ebay also. You could also probably find in an auto parts store.
zimsjeep Please I don't know what to ask for. Please give complete description of relay I'm to ask for. Your answer is too vague. I need to know in detail what type of relay and what the other connector is called. Please send.
I did the same thing... except mine is all wireless because my garage is detached... I have the relay add-on so I wired one of the opener remotes to the relay panel I have a wireless transmitter on the garage man door and it has 2 dry contacts on a separate loop.. I wired the overhead door sensor to the dry contact loop and I can monitor and open the door from the keypad, fob or from my automation computer
Any idea how to control two garage doors? Setting a function key as a trigger apparently doesn't differentiate which function key, and both relays fire at the same time for both keys.
I thought of maybe triggering a relay upon the fault of a zone I'm not using, and making each function key fault the respective zone, but I guess you can't make a function key fault a zone (that I know of).
I'm stuck.
Same question. I got it working by setting the second door and button to partition 2, but to activate the second door you need to switch the keypad over to partition 2 (code+*+partition#) and then hit the button. Looking for a better way to do that.
how about an led/ on when armed away../ off when disarmed..for a visual,
jose l. Yes, that can be done using the trigger outputs
Is there a time that the output stays active how does the relay know the door is open will the output say on
There is a programming function to give a 2 second pulse. The author also said to contact the garage door, and you can tell from there that if the door is open or closed.
I dont see where you you completed the magnetic contact position status sensor setup for the garage door and the programming and connection to the security panel. Is this available on youtube?
If the large garage door is on the alarm it should be programmed as 03 for instant or 02 for delay 2 or 01 for delay 1. Usually a large Garage door contact is covered in metal and can be drilled to the floor of the garage and a magnet with a L bracket is mounted to the door with a large magnet and needs to be aligned with the contact. The wire is connected to a armored lead and run the alarm panel. An alternate way is to use a wireless contact and wire to the inputs of the wireless device. The delay times for 01 should be shorter than 02. The garage may be 120 seconds to allow for opening and closing. The interior garage door to the house may be 01 and programed for 30 seconds. As in the video the keypad was just inside next to the door.
Awesome video and instructions! You mentioned in the video that you can either program a key on the panel or use a keyfob. I would like to do the same thing you've done here using my Honeywell 5834-4 keyfob connected to my Vista 20p via the CE3 Street Smart code encrypter. Any advice or even just point me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!
hi
i have problem when power down the panel and power up the garage door open it self. when i power up relay clicks.
please if you can help me.
Chandran Muttiah This has been mentioned a few times. I also mention it in the video description. Some guys have found a workaround for it. Check all the comments. Thanks for watching
Great demo. Thanks. One interesting development I notice the other day. I powered the system off to add a new zone (following this video) and the battery went dead during the hook up (need a new one). The interesting thing was, when I plugged the AC back in, the relay tripped and the garage door opened. I have done this now three more times to test this was not a fluke and indeed, each time power is lost completely to the system results in the garage door going up when power is returned. Is there a way to prevent this? Did I do something wrong?
Thanks,
Hello there just wondering How do I get the manual instructions in ademco programming?
search at www.panelguides.com You should be able to get a pdf document. Download programming not installation.
The Vista 15P only has one partition so the prompts are slightly different. But we got it working ! ! ! Thanks ! ! ! !
Now that we have the trigger set up with the *80 function, can it be called from a keyfob? I'm only using 3 of the 4 address loops on the keyfob, so it would be convenient to have the 4th key to open the garage door. Is this possible?
Question: When you are programming the function keys, does it effect all keypads... So you only have to program it once on that 6160, and you can hit key D with the 6150 (that I heard in the background), and it will open/close the door... Correct?
Yes, programming the function keys will affect all keypads connected to the system. So the "D" key i programmed in this video performs the same operation on all my keypads (6160 and 6150) Hope this helps.
It does... Thank you!
Great video. Explained this thoroughly. Thank you.
Jim Zogorski Thanks for the comment and for watching.
What is the voltage rating on the relay?
Dude, you are the best
Now that was pretty cool - being able to open garage door via the HW 6160 function key. Additionally, thanks for the detailed and step by step instructions. However - I'm driving myself crazy trying to program one of the function keys (A,B,C,D) on the HW 6160 Keypad to "arm instant" as an easier method than opening the door and pressing # 7. Any help and reply would be greatly appreciated - Best Always.
I don't. I didn't have the box for it. Napco I believe made it. Any relay will work that has dry contacts. Go to radio shack and get one.
Where did you get the relay and what is the exact brand and model number?
That relay he used was used from a old system, you might try a ELK924 sensitive relay that has positive and negative trigger inputs. Power the relay with 12volts aux power and use the trigger cable yellow T17 (-) to the T(-) on the elk relay. You would then put the door opener wires to COM and N.O on the elk relay. When the relay gets energized it has a red status led that will stay lit for the 2 seconds. This puts a short on the Com and N.O. (normally open). The elk924 relay supports 2 sets of contacts with N.C (normally closed) Com and N.O
Ron Thompson Thank you!
Thanks ZIMSJEEP ! ! ! ! ! It works great with the "D" button on both keypads ! ! !
When the "D" button is programmed as a Output Device Command in *57 Menu Mode how does the system know to execute Function 01 that is programmed in *80 Menu Mode? The system allows up to 48 functions and I don't follow how the keypad function keys are assigned to execute the correct function.
I subed. Keep up the nice work. Interested in how you integrated your burg panel to your cameras.
Outstanding video !!! Very well done.
Thanks for helping us, great value.
+Graph Guy Glad it helped...thanks for watching
First I would like to say thanks for that great video i have a question instead of a function key can i use a code to trigger it
Loved it Helps a lot and thank you
this is my third time watching... Great video!!
Thanks man, glad it helped!
WHERE CAN I FIND SUCH A RELAY
Its a spst relay. Readily available at Radio Shack or automotive stores.
Hey Jim,
Would it be OK if I posted a video on my channel that sends people over to this video? I think my subscribers would love to see it.
Absolutely...no problem at all.
Jon
I am also having the problem if power is lost by battery and power.. Garage door opens up when power is restored.. can anyone else confirm that this is happening.
I think it is just what happens with the panels. On 20p panels, most of the time when there powered up, keypads sound a long steady beep. I hope that helped!
Thanks you have a nice system your self and ill make a video showing the cams and panel integrated.
Very informative, thank you!
Brandon You're welcome, thanks for watching
Great VID! Thank You!
TolicaCanadian No problem. Glad it was helpful and thanks for watching.
Great video!
Very nice I know what I will be doing tomorrow!
I've been installing V20p almost 4 years. usually only programming field *41*42*43*84*56. These videos are a huge help, thanks.
Do you have a video on Zone Doubling?
Phillip Goodman Glad the videos were helpful. I don't have a zone doubling video. Maybe I'll make one in the future.
zimsjeep Thanks. I found some good info on it, Could come in handy in the field.
20:38 I heard a 6160 and the 6150 in the background.
+Kristin Crodian Yep, I have both keypads connected to the system.
Me gustaria ver este video con subtitulos en español
very good ... very informative.
Thanks for the comment!
Great video
nice, thanks for sharing
good video
Thanks
Awesome
Thank you
You're welcome!
Cool I have a Vista 20p I am going to do somewhat of the same thing but I am going to use a altronix relay to turn my siren off till I test my sys i installed i am putting lot of pir in my house and I have pets
Take a look at my system videos!
lol I thought this was a SafeWatch pro 3000
