Although I am not a music student, I have been playing the flute for 15 years and was part of my school orchestra during both primary and secondary school. I still practise the flute and piano, and I absolutely love and enjoy music! Your vlog feels like a glimpse into my childhood dream of attending a music college-practising, rehearsing, catching up with friends, and going out to dinner together after class. It’s incredible to see that what I once dreamed of is actually happening somewhere. The moment I heard you practising Mozart’s Concerto KV314 in your last video was absolutely mesmerising!
1. HIIII JAMIEEEEE 2. the last minute touch ups before ur class r sooooo real, that’s me before my cello lessons🙈😭🤭 alsooooo i’m so happy u posted spencer tyyy🫶🏻😁🤩
Y’all are too cute ☺️ Your videos bring me happiness and make me want to be productive 😅 I’m so sorry about the program crashing and losing a lot of time 😞 Thank you sooo much for sharing this long video with us! 😍 We appreciate your hard work on the videos despite your busy schedule 🥲
These vlogs give me so much comfort and make me feel like we are not doing this musician life alone! And I catch myself laughing so many times when watching these! 😂 Great job and good luck with everything 🎉😊
@SpencerRubin I’d love to see a video dedicated to how you make your reeds and your equipment. You have a beautiful sound. I’d also love to hear your opinion on oboes and how you came to choose a Howarth!
I am so happy I play the clarinet (amateur, and very not Juilliard) and I can get my reeds from the shop. Every time I watch Spencer make reeds (and apparently he goes through about 9 a day), I thank various gods I didn't choose the oboe. But - suitably impressed!!
hi spencer! i recently discovered your channel and your quite an inspiration me! i am a freshman in highschool on the path to persue piano in university and i love classical music. it's so cool to see how music uni may be like in the future ❤
Spencer I want to go to Juilliard and I was wondering how the audition progress works could you make a video about it explaining what you did to prepare and just how it works❤❤❤❤ your so cool❤😊
I was driving home this evening in the San Francisco Bay Area and listening to the NPR program "From the top" on the radio, a collection of favorite segments picked by staff of the show. One of them was a(n at the time, just coming out of the pandemic) 16 year old oboist named @Spencer Rubin, playing the last movement of the Bach double oboe/violin concerto with Host Peter Dugan, and the violinist was a co-host of the show. Flawless intonation, clear phrasing, good choices for dynamic contrast .... so unless there are two Oboists named Spencer Rubin, very well done!
Always love when you practice for orchestra - just traveled in time when you played Sibelius 2 theme (played it 2 years ago) but could'nt quite grasp it but then it hit me :D
take the 3 hour studio class, put in in July heat, while holding a 75 pound instrument, and add 10 hours. THATS band camp. That happens for a WEEK STRAIGHT- and if your percussion... YOU HAVE A WEEK BEFORE THAT WHICH ARE 9 HOUR DAYS--------------- its fun either way😁
I’m sure you get this question a lot, but when did you start playing oboe? I’m interested in attending Juilliard in the future, however I have only been playing the oboe for two years so I’m not sure if I have much of a chance-
Your the reason I chose the oboe for band so I’m a beginner and 2 of my reeds that I bought at the exact same in the same place both play a note high do you have anything that could help
Looks like a lot of fun, although from what I remember of studying both oboe and classical music, the kind of fun you catch where you can, amidst working and studying grueling hours. "Dude, that solo ATE!!" Can you walk me through what that expression's short for? Is it an extension of something like "That joke KILLED" like they say in comedy clubs? We used to say "something BITES", but meaning we didn't like it, but ATE clearly means it was good. Nice reed-making stuff!!
wait like 2 general questions 😭 1. If your put onions English horn do you have to own one or do u use Juilliards 2. Are you like allowed to eat in class
Is julliard fun? I wanna go to julliard for acting but i also play french horn. So can you do multiple things. Like music/band and acting or is it one or another?
When i first saw the vid on my notifications i asked myself "wait, did spencer just post the same vlog from last time again? Or is youtube recommending it to me for some reason? Ohhh waittttt"
The Juilliard School is a private performing arts conservatory in New York City. Founded by Frank Damrosch as the Institute of Musical Art in 1905, the school later added dance and drama programs and became the Juilliard School, named after its principal benefactor Augustus D. Juilliard. (I will find u)
You kinda remind me of Sal Mineo 😎🤗 He was a very talented actor and kind wonderful guy. Hollywood completely wasted his amazing talent and treated him wrong. Really truly wish I could have known him. Gotta wait till I get to Heaven to see him. Nice happy videos by the way. You’re very musically talented and are very cheerful. All the best to you. Jesus Loves you!

Hi Jamie ❤
U must save a lot of money on reeds by making them yourself - if I remember correctly, oboe reeds are very expensive
