      Celestion321 Both Mr. R and The Roman did take the yoke. Both did very well with me talking them though with limited or no experience flying an airplane.

      +Dakoda Neilson I have a question. What is the cooldown period between these checks? Is it every single time, or just every time the plane would have a chance to break? Or is there an abridged version for subsequent flights?

    For people learning, just wanted to add you are mainly looking for water in the fuel when you test it. Water is heavier than gas and will have settled on the bottom (where you are pulling from) and since it is heavier you can see it on the bottom pretty easily. Also some of the testers have filters and water traps, which gives a comfort level for putting the fuel back in (a lot of people just toss it on the ground and let it evaporate)

    I don't know why I like watching preflight stuff. I watched some dude play a flight sim and 40 minutes was just preflight. It was crazy but I couldn't stop watching.

      +swSephy | Sim Racing Heh, yeah, just having done a few flights trying to get my ticket, it makes me wonder how in the actual fuck Southwest is able to go through it's checklists while loading and unloading passengers, fuel, cargo and commissary for a far more complex aircraft, in just 20 minutes. Makes me wonder why airline pilots make less than I do, and I drive a beat up '98 Impreza (but unlike the one reviewed by Regular Cars, mine's a stick).

      +NoBrakes23 I laughed on the inside, when preflighting the airplane I tend to be focused on airplane related stuff and less on what other people are saying. I wanted to do the review because I love RCR, the humor, the whit, its up my alley but as the pilot, I have to be the serous boring one who is putting safety first before anything else.

    I was able to experience flying, of a Piper, as a copilot last weekend. We did full preflight walk around, and checked the cockpit switches. I was able to pullback the yoke, lightly, at 60 mph. I did turns, had a little heavy right hand. So we were off, to the right, a bit. Holding yoke with right hand, I felt in more control. It was a freedom flight. Awesome experience.

      +masterchiefgtx Well, the Aspen 1000 is about 7,000 and a GNS 430 is about 4,000 and the autopilot is about 5,000. I would say for a fully functioning 74 archer II your looking around 30,000. But with the Avionics the plane is now worth about 60,000.

      laderhozin Well with airplane I can go 100+ miles an hour safely all the time. It has 180 HP that I can use all the time. The dodge has 600+ that can be used some times.

    People wish that flying cars existed but I believe that they already exist and that the PA-28 is one of them. It may not operate like a normal car but that's because it isn't a normal car, it's a flying car!

    +Dakoda Neilson use the damn primer. Pumping the throttle gets you a very a half assed prime.
    I like to shutdown at 1000 rpm to leave the throttle properly cracked for the next start. In colder areas you will never get a good start with just the accelerator pump.

    Two radios are handy on IFR flights when constantly having to switch frequencies. You can have several dialed in at once in anticipation of your next frequency hand off. Or have one set to the weather and the other to CTAF. I leave one of my radios on weather pretty much all the time.

    I don't think you're supposed to pump the throttle in an aircraft carb... it's upside down from a car so you're just pumping in fuel that will pool up and pose a fire hazard. My CFI pumped the throttle on the Warrior before my IFR checkride. Then I did it on the checkride and the examiner made sure he told me not to do that and told me why. 14:40 in the video

      +modlincraig I know it is not good practice, however, on the old pipers the primer handle is a little tricky when starting from the right seat. The airplane now has the primer push-switch because someone broke the primer handle.

    that short black antenna is not the ADF I'm almost certain, it is the ELT. an ADF antenna usually looks like a clothes line running from the top of the tail to the top of the cabin.

    I used to fly as part of an aircrew in the USAF. This brought back a LOT of memories of preflights. At least it isn't 3am and snowing. Also, FUCKING CBs. I still have callouses from those things. Almost canx'd a flight because one refused to push in until the crew chief came over with a rubber mallet...

    Why don't cars have tinted visors? As a tall person this seems like a good idea. So you can like still see with it all the way down.

      +lolz larkin When I worked at a car dealer as a porter, one of the used cars we got in that I had to clean out had a transparent visor like this clipped on to the existing visor. I took it and put it in my car! Not sure where these are sold but it is definitely one of the coolest things I've ever put in my car! And it blocks out just enough sunlight to make an otherwise very dangerous road condition extremely manageable. Maybe Amazon sells them?

      Ah you know what, good call, I could definitely see something from this era coming with it stock. Cars at that time had the option for lots of dainty add-ons that were actually quite useful, like the steering knob lol

    That whip antenna aft of the GPS antenna is your ELT antenna. If you still have an ADF, the primary is on the bottom of the plane and looks similar to a spade -- and you will have a "long wire" sense antenna spanning the fwd part of the cockpit with the fin, never a whip (and the ADF is HF not VHF). You also appeared to have "blown off" inspecting the Nav antennae on top of the fin.
    The electrical system is the same as in a car. Car people refer to theirs by the battery rating (12V). Airplane people refer to theirs by the alternator rating (14V). Car alternators also put out 14 volts.

    He needs a review on his radio antennas...the small antenna he identified as the ADF antenna is actually the ELT (Emergency Location Transmitter) antenna. That, and the GPS antenna is above the cockpit on the center of the plane (Visible in the video).

    We have a piper Saratoga turbo and we've always dumped the fuel on the ground after checking it for contaminates and water, idk If that's just a small airport thing we've just always done it.

      Shafer Amos The legality of that varies state to state, for example it’s illegal in Florida to do that. Nothing wrong with pouring it back in, but you should use a filter to be safe. The fuel he poured back in looked contaminated by water to me, but it may have just been the video. Most the places I know of have a container to pour the fuel that’s drained so all the contaminates and water are filtered

      +Cry Whit Quite different. AVGAS ("Aviation Gasoline") contains a lot of lead: between 0.45 and 0.56 g/L for the most widespread 100LL ("low lead"). It has a performance number ("Octane") of 100 for lean and 130 for rich mixture. There were higher-grade fuels, which are still used in very small quantities for warbirds and races with a performance number up to 145. So far, despite some 20 years of research, no single unleaded drop-in replacement fuel suitable for all engines unmodified has been developed.
      So aviation has in many countries (including the US and most of Europe) a special exemption from an otherwise blanket ban of leaded fuels.

      +Cry Whit Well, this is embarassing. Out the exhaust pipe. Yes, it's bad for ... basically everything and everybody except the manufacturers of tetraethyl-lead, which is the compound in which the lead is mixed into the fuel. Which is why nobody is really happy with the situation (except ... you know), and the search for an unleaded replacement has been going on for a long time. There are now some candidate fuels for replacing the leaded AVGAS (www.bonanza.org/9-news/1016-faa-selects-fuels-for-100ll-replacement-testing?noredirect=true), but it's going to take a while. There are already some lower-grade replacement fuels (such as Total AVGAS UL91), and some aircraft are certified to operate on automotive fuel, but ... piston-driven airplanes are still basically the only source of lead in the environment, and will probably be for years to come.

    FWIW, a properly functioning car charging circuit should be putting out 14V. If that airplane operates @ 14V, its the same as a "12V" system on a car.

      +Daniel Hankey And similarly, a healthy lead acid battery should be 12.6-12.8V off charge, even though it's referred to as 12V. If you're only getting 12V off a 12V battery, it's not holding a charge properly.

      Wire is sized for the current it has to carry. Twice the voltage means double the power for the same size wire.

    I wish cars had circuit breakers. I get that they use fuses in order to force joe suburb who knows nothing about cars to take it in for service and have whatever electrical problem properly diagnosed but its kind of a pain when your fuse goes due to some little thing and you have to go track down a few

    Actually it is recommended that you wipe the oil dipstick because the crankcase pressure will cause it to rise up the tube giving an inaccurate reading. Always best to clean dipstick to get accurate readings. Not hating on your video just trying to help. Also when checking the horizontal stabilator check for slack from side to side. Just spent a fortune replacing worn bushings on my plane last annual because of not being aware. Fly safe.

    Aside from having three axes of control and the air is literally your road, the one big difference between an airplane and a car is if you run into trouble in an airplane you cannot pull over and stop at the nearest cloud. Pre-flight is important. Nearest analogy: Imagine every time you leave your house in a car you are headed out from home to a family member in a huge winter storm with 0 feet visibility, you must take a highway/freeway without a guard rail and there is a 1000' foot drop. I bet you'd check your car condition a lot more carefully.

    To the owner, how many hours do you have? How affordable is regular flying in something like a vans r4 for a regular joe?

      +FireRisinWithin Lets just say I have enough.
      Well this about as regular as you can get, I am interested in the fact you bring up the RV-4. The RV series are great planes and ones that are close to my heart. The RV-4 you can build realistically for about 100,000, which in the aviation world, to have a zero time aircraft with good instruments for the price is AMAZING. The RV-4 is not a starter airplane and I would suggest doing your certificate in Piper, Cessna, Diamond, or similar. Once you have about 100 to 150 hours that is when a plane like the RV-4 is with in your reach (insurance wise). The RV-4 is an aerobatic airplane that has good cross country performance and can be set up to fly in instrument conditions. The cost of owning a experimental airplane is cheaper then that of a certified airplane.
      You can own and fly a plane yearly for the same price it cost to have a Mustang or Corvette.
