    Props to the animators I was expecting something slapped together, but this was very well done. The movement was fluid and the details for the buildings were good. The writing was nice, the characters were fleshed out, and it could honestly be its own show. Ngl, I was kinda sad that Marcus and the chief’s daughter didn’t get together they seemed like a nice couple.

      I will note; a Roman may use double vowels or consonants unlike a classic Latin. With all Phoenician respect from 21 to 26 says much about the order of Civilization or Greek life for that matter. Greco-Roman culture locuta est, causa finita est¹.

    We had this on tape when I was a kid. Wonderful educational video - the animated portions are entertaining and educational for children but also build their curiosity for the portions that Macaulay narrates himself. Great way to introduce kids to Roman and architectural history.

    I actually support pbs now. They are such an underrated channel. They are the cause of many sleep sessions during video lectures back in 90s middle school. As an adult and you watch this now, it was actually chalk full of information (if history is your niche) that was really interesting. I visited Rome 5 years ago and my wife was in shock of the things i pointed out in Rome. Not sure if she was impressed or had doubts.

    No thumbs down from me; the David Macaulay videos are a stable of my youth in public schools. I always loved them - they were animation for the kid in all of us, yet David's narration was of a tone and style that felt he was talking to you as an equal, instead of talking DOWN to you. when I was in Turkey in the late 1950's, I saw the Valen's Acuaduct. The grand bazaar was cool. Istanbul had about 1 million people. I saw the hippodrome. The aya sophia which became a museum. The blue mosque was grand. We took the express ferry to Yalova, and then a civilian bus to our air base near Karamursel. At that time Karamursel was a village.

    I am having nostalgia watching this! The first documentary I saw narrated by David Macaulay was "Pyramid" and I loved the rest ever since the. Awesome how most of the cast of "I, Claudius" provided the voice talents for the characters in this :) The animated story accompanying this documentary is cool too! When it came to architecture the Romans certainly were masters at it. Licinus is a greedy bloated toad 11:15. Haha Laurens is too funny 12:59. Aiden is pretty and has a fiery spirit, was disappointed she and Marcus did not get married. Someday I will definitely visit Pompeii, Herculaneum, Ostia, the provincial cities and Rome itself. Macaulay's documentaries are great in getting kids interested in History.

    • @kingleech16
      @kingleech16 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like this program too. I actually notice that in all of the Macaulay films, there is a certain sense of melancholy. In Cathedral, virtually no one lives to see the Cathedral built, Castle ends with the castle a ruin, decrepit and abandoned (and the Welsh subjugated), in Pyramid the royal house self destructs in an almost Shakespearean manner, and, as you pointed out, the obvious love interests in Roman City are kept apart. Pretty downer-ish fare for kids' programming, though as a child I appreciated that the stories didn't feel the need to sugar-coat too much (though they thankfully didn't make them out and out misery fests like some of the things that get produced).

    • @trevorjames9366
      @trevorjames9366 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @splatbubble
      @splatbubble 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@kingleech16 If I may add my thoughts here... I don't remember Pyramid all that well... but in Cathedral, I think Pierre dies knowing peace, and realizing that his town is happy and prosperous. So, while the Cathedral construction does indeed outlast his life, the whole thing is kind of presented in a 'multi-generational' way. So it's nice. And in the case of the Castle... the Castle itself was a weapon of war, and the animation shows that the Castle eventually becomes a backdrop for a thriving multi-cultural community. So... I think it's quite a happy ending indeed :)

      That Licinus did say "December" means the tenth and that two more months should be added to the year for taxes. While he got demoted, Augustus somewhat liked the idea and named the two extra months after himself and his late uncle, Julius Caesar. Of course, instead of being tax months, he placed the two new months in the summer for festivals in the glory of Rome and honor of Gaul… that's my theory on how it happened, anyway.

    The Romans and the 'Barbarians' speak of eachother as crude, and hatefull, but not all of the 'Barbarians' hated the Romans coming to their land. They'd often welcome the new settlers, and see there magnificent structures. The Romans also let warriors from other tribes join their army if they wish to, and they got roman citizenship if you completed your minimal duty in the army, so you and your family where able to become the owner of land. That way, the 'barbarians' where able to make a decent living when Rome conquered them.

    I remember in the french Asterix comics where every (male) Gaul's name ends with "ix", like Asterix and Obelix and Panoramix (or Getafix in english), and the pet dog is called Idefix (Dogmatix in english). And the Romans' names all end with "us" like Ignoramus or Caligula Minus, and the Egyptian names end with "is," the Goths "ac" and so on.
    Needless to say, most of the names are puns...

    • @ChristopherSobieniak
      @ChristopherSobieniak 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, still it was nice they followed that idea with suffix's being that way for each group.

    • @Blokewood3
      @Blokewood3 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The "ix" suffix for the Gauls was inspired by the Gaulish leader Vercingetorix. "Rix" in this context meaning leader, similar to the Latin word for king "rex." So Asterix uses the suffix not too incorrectly, but the other names for the Gauls are more fanciful. Most male roman names did end with "us." The Gothic "ic" is inspired by famous Goths like Theodoric or Alaric.

    I always wondered what Irish druids were doing in ancient France?

    • @EllieMaes-Grandad

      Druids were a feature of Celtic life, thus in Hibernia, Britannia, Gaul, until Roman conquest finally annihilated them on Anglesey.

    Patrick Stewart voice acting? Maybe I'm wrong but the Prefect sounds like him.
    Also, I was 3 or 4 when this was on PBS and this is awesome homework, had you seen the trash I had to watch in High school in the late 90s you would be very happy with this. lol

    I am sure I read this book City at primary school in 89 - still this is a good documentary even through the medium of animation.
    The use of the voices from I Claudius is a good reference.
    An amazing series on Roman building techniques is on Yale course channel. Professor Kleiner analyzes the major public architectural commissions of the emperor Trajan in Rome.

  • @seanshepherd1543
    @seanshepherd1543 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I can't stand the ending. There is NO reason whatsoever that Marcus can't marry Aiden. Sad endings are stupid and pointless. The whole reason of watching movies is to escape the harshness of reality, so a happy ending is required, if you ask me. I'm not into those plots where there's a sad or stupid ending like this and the author is like "Well, that's more realistic." That's the point! It's not SUPPOSED to be so realistic. It's supposed to let you *escape* realism. >.< This is the only ending of David Macaulay's that I can't stand. But other than that I like it.

    • @Emper0rH0rde
      @Emper0rH0rde 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sad endings are not inherently pointless, but they are pointless when there's NO POINT. I've never liked the ending either. It's a low key diabolus ex machina.

      @@lance8080 I think Macauley's stories do show the good and bad in situations that are behind the control of any person. I still think of the blacksmith from the "Castles" documentary, wondering if he survived after the attempted siege on his lord's castle, since they never went further on that with him. I'm thinking he wasn't one of the lucky ones to escape inside the castle but if he did, we will never know!
