  • Today let's walk through the decision process and thinking behind my ownership of a 2020 BMW R1250GS, 2022 Aprilia Tuareg 660, and 2022 KTM 350 EXC. Is this the perfect combo of bikes for all around motorcycling on and off road? What's missing and what's coming into my garage in the future? #motorcycle #motorbike #adv

I am a 69 year old rider from San DIego. I own 3 bikes currently BMW S 1000 XR, KTM 390 Adventure and KTM 450 EXC 6 days. I came from a dirt background first. I think your video reviews are very detailed and we think alike. I think your choice of bikes right now is spot on for the reasons you stated. You can't beat BMW for comfort and handling, everyone seems to love the Tuareg and I have owned 3 KTM EXCs since 2003 and loved them all and was pleasantly surprised that they have all been not only cutting edge dirt bikes with a plate, but reliable too which surprised me. I have ridden Baja extensively since 1994. I test rode the T7 at Stagecoach Campground a few months ago and was very impressed with the road and off road manners of the bike. You can't beat Japanese reliability, especially Yamaha. I don't need fancy electronics on a bike that has only 72 to 80 hp, especially when I am off road and far from home. Keep up the good work.

Very nicely done, your videos are informative and to the point. I suffer from the same affliction - I typically rotate my bikes every few months; have had 150+ over a long riding career. I had to comment on this video since we've landed on a very similar stable of bikes. For all of the same uses you mentioned, I have an HP GS 1250, KTM 890 R, and newly added Beta 350 RR-S - love them all!
As far as future content, I'd like to see a review on the KTM 1290 Super Adventure. I've had several iterations of the older platform 1190R, 1090R, 1290SA and I really like what they've done with the latest version by incorporating many of the good features of the 890. Keep up the good work - it's great to see fresh content on a wide swath of what's available on the market!

Great collection! I currently own a KTM890s and a KLX300. And there were 4 other bikes in the last four years that had a moderately short stay. If I had the room I would be testing my wife's patience with a 1250GS for long touring and a Ninja 400 for track days. Nothing wrong with changing bikes frequently if it's your passion.

Thanks for a good 2023 intro, jeez I approach my motorcycle passion the same way you do. I generally have 2 Moto’s, a large adventure Moto and a street legal enduro. A couple years ago I had a WR450F, plated. A F800GSA and a 310GS that I set up with TKC80 knobbies, skid plate, foot pegs and bar riser to closely duplicate my 800GSA. Currently I own a 2021 40th Anniversary 1250 GSA with knobbies and a KLX 230 for my enduro. I tend to flip my Motos within 12 - 18 months. Good info and TH-cam channel. Ride on!

I appreciate your in depth review of the bikes we love, swapping them every now and then while sacrificing your own preference is commendable.
Speaking of affordable bikes, Id like to hear your take on the Moto Morini X-Cape 650. It's new to the market but seems like a very competitive offer from a price point of view. I hope you'll be able to get your hands on one sometime.

I think with your TH-cam business it all makes perfect sense.
I used to owned 3 bikes as well, but I found myself riding just one of those 3 close to 90% of times. And I hated the feeling of having two bikes I was not riding. So.. I sold them and I left just one. And now 701 Enduro is my one and only bike for everything. And surprisingly it works well for my kind of riding :) cheers!

I loved you discussion about the R1250GS - "I just like it"
You left out the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty and the exceptional customer service after the sale.. BMW installed 3 fuel pumps in my 2007 GS and they replaced my drive shaft in my 2015GSA..
.. Miss having a GS, Utilitarian, like boxer engine, like sound, like torque , like shaft drive, like comfort, like it does not tip over all the way, like adjustable windshield....
I agree, Have and had many bikes, but the GS is my favorite. I have owned a 2001, 2004, 2009, 2012, 2007, 2015 and a 2021. Mix of GS and GSAs. I am Blessed and have more than I need and more than I deserve.

What sells me on the KTM, and I'm no orange fan, is the PDS rear suspension. Pretty unique these days, and frankly I can't ignore it on any bike whose primary design criteria are weight and simplicity. I rode a 2017 model for a day in Spain, and was impressed. Looking forward to the detailed video.

I really enjoy your content. The idea of owning the bikes 6-12 months and then moving on provides a unique ownership experience, which is a main reason I subscribed to your channel.
Look forward to the Tuareg dealership experience, and what maintenance you are able to do on your own. I do all my own maintenance, which is a main reason for owning the bikes that I do. Seems like the newer bikes are getting tougher to work and the whole right-to-repair is an important issue for me

    • @RiggadonDan
      @RiggadonDan ปีที่แล้ว +1

Changing bikes every 6-12 months is fun, you get to try and own so many bikes! It really lets you figure out what your "perfect" bike is, if there is such a thing!!

    • @Ian-bq7gp
      @Ian-bq7gp ปีที่แล้ว +1

Absolutely. There are many who want a cheap bike to run, you can self service and it's reliable, simple with anologue Speedos that you could take round the world or despatch ride. That's my personal view and I've got a Suzuki Dr650 from 1996. A good bike and not expensive. The v Strom 660 maybe a secondhand bargain I may get next. I like Norton's, BSA twins from 1950s as they're what I learned to work on but the chrome etc and frame was far better than you find today. An engine with simple mechanics for round the world isn't about power. If I was well off I'd like the design of the tiger 1200 with shaft but I'd be frightened to drop it. I'd never buy BMW or Italian in general or KTM. Its Yamaha, triumph maybe tiger or scrambler twin or Suzuki or certain Honda's like 750 Africa twin for me. KTM is for well off people. Spares are expensive. The 850 guzzi TT shaft seems nice but I doubt build quality, electrics and whether exhausts rot out quickly and cost over £1000 for a new guzzi one that will rot like the original and the stuff like starter motor will pack up or cam followers self destructing like on the griso which was a beautiful bike if it hadn't had this awful huge fault that totally has put me off ever buying a Moto guzzi which is sad. Ducati and Aprilia never but some Moto Morini were really good in the 1980s as a mate did huge mileage and spoke well of the original 350 cc v twin .

I like the fact that you always have different bikes. I have a 1969 Harley Electra Glide for nostalgic reasons since my Dad bought it new in 69 and I grew up with it, a 2001 Yamaha WR 426 from when I had my dealership and I haven't found anything for my riding style that would be better and a 2018 KTM 1290 SAR for dirt roads and riding with my wife. My bikes are all paid off and I'm not buying any new ones so I watch your channel to keep up on what's out there. Thanks.

Nice kickoff for 2023! I relate on the weather, it's been wet and sloppy up here in Ridgecrest and at my cabin up in Kennedy Meadows.
Hey, it's a tough job, but someone has to do it. Owning and riding and reviewing an endless succession of high quality bikes for a living is not a sure formula for success, but I think you are crushing it. I think the ownership commitment is an important element. Kind of like a marriage, it makes you think before buying in.
I'm 68, cervical fusion, lumbar issues, cancer survivor, definitely not the man I used to be. I appreciate your attention to detail in your reviews. I have to adjust your take - younger, bigger, stronger, not beaten up, but you have consistency across the reviews that I find valuable.
I'm most interested in the mid-weight ADV category as it includes the next bike I'll likely buy. I'll never buy a big GS/KTM/Honda. I also think weight management is important - KTM/Husky and Aprilia get it. Yamaha doesn't. I won't be "adventure riding" per say, just looking for a comfortable lively day tourer I can take on forest service roads. While the Taureg is the current front runner, I'm waiting to see how the new Transalp reviews (I hope it is available here in the USA).
I agonized a bit over a new dualsport - I've pretty familiar with KTM EXC's as several friends have 450's and 500's. The 350 has always intrigued me. But I just wouldn't use one like it should be used, I'm too fragile. And the EXC I've ridden are just not all that fun on the highway. Being up in the north Mojave I tend to ride highways to my relatively nearby offroad areas. And I enjoy big mixed days going into Nevada or up the Sierra Eastside. I ended up getting an uncorked WR250R.
Be careful on the MX riding! I was a racer in my youth, you can definitely get hurt in that activity.

It sounds like you have some fun plans for this year. I can’t wait too see the trials training, as that should be some awesome content.
On Adventure bikes, a long term review on the Desert X would be interesting. I considered ordering one, but with all the fine silt on the roads here in Alaska, dealership a full day’s drive (365 miles to Anchorage) away for service, and a tank removal to access the air filter caused me to look at a something a bit easier to self service (Japanese). So I have a DRZ400s on hold (new, as no used in the area) to pick up this spring as my “refresher re-introduction” to dirt/ trail riding bike. It’s been 24 years since I last rode in the dirt, so I have some self training to do.

Another excellent video, Ian, and three fine choices of bikes! As you were discussing buying and selling, I was thinking it would be great to hear about your experiences and recommendations for buying and selling motorcycles. When I bought my 2021 R1250 GSA I also considered a 2021 GS. I really like the GS's lower seat height, but I also really appreciate the GSA's longer range, which comes in handy when riding the wide open spaces of the Pacific Northwest. I don't have an off-road bike at the moment, but have been looking at the KTM 350 EXC-F and the KTM 300 XC-W as options. I'd love to hear your take on the two. Wishing you a fantastic 2023! Cheers!

Man, you go through a lot of bikes! That's good because you put out a lot of reviews. Funny how you came back to the GS. I have sworn off GSs several times myself too, but somehow I always come back to them. I have exactly the same one you show in this video and I love it. I like my Norden and my KTM 500 EXC too but there is something special about the big GS. Too bad they are so dang expensive!

Thanks for testing the Aprillia!! I owe a 1200 ac 2010 GS but I simply can’t part with it. I‘ve tested many of other brands (Honda, KTM’s, Triumph, Yam etc.) but there is something special with the GS even it becomes 13yrs of age soon. Love it or leave it. At the age of 67, I discovered last year off-roading and I’m looking for something lighter. I tested the Tuareg during an intense weekend riding and that’s the first bike that hooked me apart from BMW. As I don’t want to afford 2 bikes - riding not buying but I don’t run a TH-cam business 😉 - I’m looking forward to your in-depth-review for the 660.
The dealership is not the big issue here. And my preferred region of riding is Italy anyway.
    Love your channel

In particular I am looking forward to that GS 1250 / Multistrada V4S comparison video you announced earlier. On a side not... Any plans to test the the 2023 KTM 890 Adventure regular model? It seems to cover most of what I want especially with the new suspension. Reliability is still a concern though. I am pondering the 890 or a Norden. A departure from my normal Japanese choices. Best!

I enjoy your content and seeing the ownership experience for many bikes is valuable for those of us who, for numerous practical reasons, won't do that. I enjoy mid-size adventure bikes but am probably going to get a 2023 KTM 1290 SAS, but I am not stuck on that. The reality is I don't do technical off-road riding. I do a lot of road miles and the bike needs to perform well there. I also do gravel roads, fire trails, and assorted dirt roads and trails in the mix. When I am off pavement I am not riding hard and fast. Been there, done that when I raced motocross. This isn't the track and that is not what I am doing out there. I stop and get out the binos and enjoy where I am. A larger bike with additional weight has not been a problem for me and I don't put myself in situations where it will be. The riding I prefer is well within the capabilities of a BMW or KTM large adventure bike. Personally, I have not had any real issues picking up a larger bike or getting turned around in tight spaces which are concerns that drive many to smaller bikes. There are techniques for those things. It might take some work including using power to the rear wheel while not seated on the bike to get it off the ground or spin it around in a tight spot. I have been able to manage without assistance.
I would like to see your review on the changes to the 2023 KTM and BMWs but you could probably do that in a single video for each bike. A 2023 KTM or BMW may not be the best choice for long tem testing and reviews for your channel because TH-cam will be swimming in reviews on those bikes. Maybe the Moto Guzzi V85TT Travel decked out how you typically review bikes. That would be interesting but might be too niche for the purpose of your business.

you've got a big 2023 planned. Excellent. Those three are perfect. I'm still a bit bored with watching reviews for bikes that are impossible to find. the KLX 300 appears great, but it's been two years and I still have not seen one live. Rock on down the rock road.

Ian, those bikes tick all my boxes for variety and purpose - each unique with some overlap - except the 350 EXC is pretty singular purpose. Since you have made this (YT) your business, you make decisions to keep fresh content and attract new eyeballs to the channel. Perfectly understandable and defensible, so don't let naysayers (or jealous types) dissuade you. I'm looking forward to your trials choice and experience. Everything I see about trials riding and riders is that the finesse and control transfers to any other bike, with even greater confidence. You live in an area ripe for trials!

Great video. Bike suggestion - Indian FTR1200. Since you’re going to the track this year, how about flat track? Would love to follow you into that world. Keep up the great work!

For myself the top three bikes would be
    1, KTM 890 adventure R for me
2 newer style Goldwing tour for my spouse and I.
3 KTM 890 enduro for more bush bashing.
The Gs is a Top Choice. But after owning four of them I’m back on the KTM gang. I really love the bmw bikes but after nearly a decade on nearly every single model of boxer from the 1150 other then the 1250 shift cam I’m ready for the wing for my long tours.
I wanted to try lots of different bikes and almost every year I’ve sold and bought something else. I always went back to the GSA . But after stepping a leg over the Ktm 1290 adventure R, I HAD A REALLY hard time going back to the Gs.
So far in thirteen years I’m on my fifteenth bike.
    Great reviews. Keep it up.
