Poor old fella. He is like a child that just wants to meet another simple playfull spirit but all he finds and sees are dull calculators in youthfull bodies. You can see his uneasiness with the crowd, it demorilises him, on the other hand precisely cause of this situation he gives interesting insights.
i've watched his interviews from his young ages. he looks more calm and patient in early times. it seems that as he mastered, he reduced his tolerance to people and these kind of questions. i think this is quite normal for this unique director who spents his life to construct a new language, soul and breath to cinema.
He had hard time finding money for the films he wanted to make. The last one, unfortunately, he was never able to make. It is likely that this affected him.
He was really disturbed and nervous , but i think his theory of "sound is more significant and more real" is total misanderstanding , you can see the "exchange" in the film , its horribly unbalanced
I feel so ashamed, this is torture. This is a movie in itself, a great director questioned by heartless, stupid people. I am embarrassed that I too am a human being like the ones who put those unreal stupid questions. And worst of all is that arrogant tone... At least be stupid but have a good heart. Absolute disgrace. And to think those are film critics! Infinite shame. 8:36 - 8:44 - what a disgusting person! After all the treasures this man left us, that's how you look at him? The lack of respect for Bresson here makes me sick.
he is bothered by peoples almost inborn missconception of cinema as just another entertainment medium for fun and not as a serious reality altering experience.
While some of the questions asked were inane, I don't think the general hate against the audience (as expressed in many of these comments) is justified. Even today, with the Internet and a handful of very good books available about Bresson, he's still a relatively esoteric director. Digging fully into his body of works and his methods is still somewhat of a research project. In '83 you would not have the availability of the media we have today nor the additional 40 years worth of insights and investigations into this fascinating artist. I also think its unfortunate how impatient Bresson gets towards the end - I don't begrudge him that but I would have loved to hear his thoughtful answer to the question about if he thinks any of his films have failed, from his perspective.
And by idiots i mean naive, unprepared people. So far behind that their sticks and stones are too harmfull. This man was trying his best to give the world beauty and hope, concepts that might save the world but will destroy the real believers
... organisational side of this press conference is utterly terrible. Bresson shouldn't have been there. Letting movies speak for themselves seems like a better idea, especially considering this organisation.
I don't understand the fixation on him hiring nonprofessional actors. So many other filmmakers have used nonprofessionals. Why can't he? Did they mean to criticize the "actors'" performances? if so, why don't they just say so? Lol
The difference, I guess, is that he wanted to do something new, something different, he did not like filming actors playing a role, he describes it as killing the art of it in his "Notes sur le Cinématographe", so I guess those people who are supposed to be cinema critics kind of disliked his views on "their" art
roasting session with robert bresson

You could say he brought good out of the despair
I will always love how he just brings every one and their comments to dust, almost Socratic-like.
Hell of a press conference
i've watched his interviews from his young ages. he looks more calm and patient in early times. it seems that as he mastered, he reduced his tolerance to people and these kind of questions. i think this is quite normal for this unique director who spents his life to construct a new language, soul and breath to cinema.
this press conference is pure gold, I fucking love Bresson. He is the GOAT. People are dumb af
He had hard time finding money for the films he wanted to make. The last one, unfortunately, he was never able to make. It is likely that this affected him.
Thanks for the upload, priceless footage and press conference there.
What an insolent crew. I am embarrassed. and yet it helps to understand how lonely this job is. All my love for Bresson in heaven and thank you!!!
He was really disturbed and nervous , but i think his theory of "sound is more significant and more real" is total misanderstanding , you can see the "exchange" in the film , its horribly unbalanced
@@morozowvlad6363 : What do you mean?!
Priceless. What chaos! Thank you for sharing!
anybody else notice young Vladimir Putin at 10:54? damn hes really changed since his cinephile days
:))))
😂😂😂😂
thoroughly was convinced that was houellebecq
This is Amazing

i think he did not care that much haha
Thanks for the upload!
real talk!!
wow thanks.
Wow.
he is bothered by peoples almost inborn missconception of cinema as just another entertainment medium for fun and not as a serious reality altering experience.
in the end is Bresson referring to tarkovski's "Nostalghia" as the other film that was screened before his own?
I was wondering about this, too
It was most likely "Cross Creek" which premiered on the same day as "L'argent" (May 16, 1983). "Nostalghia" premiered on May 17th.
It would be great to have also the press conference for Nostalghia
IMPORTANT
now that is one stern moralist
¨De quel spectateur parlez-vous?¨ haha
Not one with very much going on, at least for her case..
trop fort..

23:18 probably the most interesting question
Probably the only interesting question.
Room full of idiots - the questions are all empty. Poor Bresson.
24:53 meilleur partie
Anyone know the film he’s referencing answering the the last question?
These people are awful. He’s clearly unhappy to suffer them.
what a bizarre and disgraceful audience, uncapable of learning from what must be one of the masters of cinehistory.
Que jornalistas péssimos! Testando a paciência do Bresson.
You can not put a man of deep thought in front of idiots, he will not surrender, but most of all he will not fight
And by idiots i mean naive, unprepared people. So far behind that their sticks and stones are too harmfull.
This man was trying his best to give the world beauty and hope, concepts that might save the world but will destroy the real believers
What an insolent and ignorant journalistic crowd. Surely they should do some reading up on Bresson to participate in this press conference.

Love his films so much but he is obviously a complete tyrant. Won't even let his actors speak! This was painful to watch
This is annoying to watch, what a pain
Speaking only in punchlines, as masters do
His films are empty, stupid, mechanical. Lack of everything worth filming.
So much arguments !
