Paul, recently your readings seem designed to address my exact, specific life situation. After decades of teaching college writing and literature classes, I'm trying to remember how I used to write creative works. My main challenge is overcoming so many voice telling me to play it safe, to write according to what is expected, and so forth, and this has been exacerbated by my recent reading of Save the Cat!, which tells writers how to write formulaic works that will pay off. As you say here, the payoff is not the reason to create. I don't know what I'm going to choose to do, but I can say that your reading validates ALL of the issues I currently have. Paul, I have been going through the situation of doing the hard work to create a life for myself, despite how modest it is. For so many years I have depended on others to provide for me, and the past three years I have been working hard to make something of myself on my own. It has come with several challenges, lacks, and suffering but there has also been immense joy, triumph, and satisfaction upon reflection. Currently, I have a female supervisor that keeps stepping in giving me advice on how to improve, which causes me to feel a little deflated as I'm already putting in a lot of hard work. But I have to remind myself that these are growing pains. Thanks as always for your reading.
