@@fm6419 Perhaps you don't know the history of this song and the circumstances of when it was recorded. This song shot them both to fame. Once he was famous, Sonny began to cheat and that's how their marriage went downhill and that is according to Cher. She admits she knew about his infidelity for years but stayed due to Chastity and the TV show. So if you call that abuse he was but that still has nothing to do with my comment. There was no trouble between them when they recorded this song together. The chemistry was truly there.

Actually, I heard the song for the first time in the movie "Groundhog Day" and ... unlike the movie character Phil Connors, I never got bored about it! Above all, I was fascinated by the syncopated rhythm of the oboe (judging by her clapping hands, Cher must be fond of this rhythm as well). To tell the truth, the song was nearly the only thing I liked about the film ...

There is something "epic" about the way Cher sings "I got *you* babe" at 2:57, 2:58 (that point in the song, whenever she sings it). I think its the resounding purity of the major third of the tonic chord, coming down to the root with such decisiveness, expressing perfect resolution not from dissonance to consonance, but from one consonance (major third) to even more perfect consonance of landing on thde tonic itself, after the previous "I got you babe"s had dissonance in them. But that simple major 3rd just sounds heroic, after all the dissonances, so the message of the song reaches a perfect climax in that moment of harmonic purity and wholeness. It's simple, but Cher's voice turns it into something almost "otherworldly", an effect heightened by its being sung in a fade-out, as if coming from some distant place.

@@retrebex5856 15 sont en accord avec moi. Qu'est ce que le probleme? Basically I was just saying the song has a very unique power among love songs in its obviously very inspired (i.e., from their relationship) use of dissonance, which is finally overcome in Cher's final 2 "I got you Babe"'s, in which "you" is sung as the mediant tone, the third above the tonic and resolving into the tonic. In the previous cases, "you" is on a dissonant note relative to the tonic; only at the very end do you get that consonance of "you" being the "heart" of the final, resolved tonic chord, which sounds especially triumphant, even "epic" the way Cher belts it out. Every note in this song conveys their unique relationship, especially how he practically worships her, and she for her part has the deepest tenderness and appreciation toward him, but not by any stretch any kind of near-worship. Each understands this asymmetry, and the song is ultimately a celebration and acceptance of her power and his servience in this asymmetrical, yet very loving relationship. It's one of the ultimate love songs precisely because it's so truthful and nuanced about their relationship. He's in effect saying: "yes, I practically worship you, and that makes it near-impossible to respect me and love me back; but I not only understand this, I can write a song about it which not only shows with genuine poetry our relationship in all its complexity and depth, but which puts you and your talent on a grand pedestal like nobody else could do. And this evens out the score: you have no choice but to love me, because 'I can make you into Cher'."
Their relationship, by the way, bears some interesting resemblance to Audrey and Seymour in "Little Shop of Horrors." Both cases are very womanly women who might normally go for the tough he-man types, but wooed and won by the "creative nerd." If you listen to "I got you babe" followed by "Suddenly Seymour" (preferably sung by Ellen Greene), you get a sense of this type of relationship, as well as Sonny's unique way of expressing it in song.
