Dramatization of President John F. Kennedy's war time experiences during which he captained a PT boat, took it to battle and had it sunk by a Japanese destroyer. He and the survivors had to make their way to an island, find food and shelter and signal the Navy for rescue.

Just finished a 3 year restoration of Little Palm Island in the Florida Keys after it was destroyed by Hurricane Irma in '17.....about 10 miles off little Torch Key near Key West. This is the actual island used by Warner Brothers as the set for the movie "PT-109". Gave me chills at times knowing that we were working on a small part of history. I was 10 when the movie came out...remember it like it was yesterday.

I saw this movie as a young boy and was so impressed with Kennedy's bravery and determination ("Take bets on it, Bucky. Either you win or you don't pay off!"). Learning more about the incident over the years there is some question about Kennedy's performance before the collision, but there was no question about his bravery after the collision. I still find this movie very inspiring.
General MacArthur wanted him court martialed. Afterall, he was the ambassador's son. Charge: Dereliction of duty.
Read John Kearseasy book Up Front, the story of PT 105, one of the boat's in Kennedy's squadron. The operation that they were involved in was a disaster from the start, poorly planned by rear echelon big wigs who knew nothing of PT boat operations. Sending 15 boats into a moonless night with only 4 boats having radar (109 wasn't one of them, they were scheduled to get radar the next month) and communications ran from the command base miles away. Keresay stated that Kennedy was an excellent PT skipper, having served as an instructor at the PT boat school in Melville, Rhode Island before coming out to the South Pacific and served as a "swing" skippers on several boats until the 109 became available.

@@Wormhole798 Well MacArthur pretty lacking as a general in my opinion. He loved using the Marines as cannon fodder.
I was eight years old in third grade when he was murdered. When our teacher let us out I ran all the way home. My mom and I listened to the radio and just minutes after 12:00 they announced he was dead. Mom and I didn't speak alot until dad got home because we were glued to the radio wonder what was happening.
been to kennedy island 3yrs ago, an inspiration! guadalcanal,,solomons island prop flight to gizo, then a banana boat to the island!
Say what you will, JFK was an honorable naval officer. He deserved the CMH.
Something else took place on dry land in 1963 that involved JFK...
Not sure about a CMH but a Navy Cross.. For his entire presidency JFK had the coconut that he carved a message for help on his desk. According to Captain Chuichi Hara (later Admiral), who captained Shigure (who hit PT109) his ship was engaging multiple PT's, he felt a shudder (the collision, he thought was a dud torpedo hit), and THEN his lookouts reported TWO PT's (one inverted, one burning), the two halves of the 109. Till the day he died (and he took a lot of grief for ramming (and ignoring) the flaming wreck of the 109) and not stopping to render aid. 1) he was in COMBAT (didn't have time to do anything) 2) He said except for the shudder he and his crew never SAW the 109. He was invited to Washington (during Kennedy's Presidency) and Kennedy forgave him for not trying to save the crew. As for Shigure (and her crew), she was considered to be a lucky ship going through 6 different naval battles with only a SINGLE casualty (killed by a splinter by a near miss, from a FREINDLY aircraft!!).

Kennedy was awarded the Navy and Marine Corps medal for keeping his crew together and facilitating their escape. A captain that loses his ship rarely gets an award. They usually get a navel board of inquiry.
@@ronaldrobertson2332 You are correct, it *was* the Amagiri that rammed PT-109, not the Shigure.
If “A Night to Remember “ has been an American production, they could’ve also cast Cliff as Charles Lightoller .

2 in the water. The rest were rescued. They found the boat parts a few years back.
The movie with cliff Robertson in p.t.109 is about JFK he was in command of the 109 also the 59 to when they pick up the marines on the is from the p.t.59
Ty Hardin, Robert Culp, Robert Blake, Cliff and a bunch of tan dudes with faces that were in scads of movies in the 60s.
They just found the remains of PT 59 in New York Harbor where it had been abandoned by its last owner (as a tour boat) and sank.
PT 109 was due to have radar installed for September 1943. However, it didn't happen .

Actually at Little Palm Island, today a very high end resort. Their launch takes you out there from the Overseas Hwy. at MM 28.5.
@@SSN515 They were modified to look like Elco PT boats from a lot of left over parts scavenged from the old Elco Boatyards in Bayonne, Rhode Island. With exception to the chines and the hull, they looked pretty damn close.

If I could build a boat that could never get torn in half, then I'd be so smart, and whoever built P.T.-109 would be so dumb.
Never knew a Kennedy who could navigate a vehicle or vessel near water without SOME LOSS OF LIFE!!
