This seems to be a very charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much! And please keep up the great job! Subscribed!!
Wow, Thank You for doing a video on their old windmills. I didn't know any of them were still operational. that is amazing. thank you for sharing these videos of the Netherlands that are not just Amsterdam.❗
Happy you're enjoying our videos! Welcome to our channel :) Yes, it's fascinating to see these old windmills and learn more about their history. It would be cool to stay overnight in one, don't you think?
I love hearing the history of places you visit......the museum was really interesting. Imagine a family of 13 living there! Bet they all got along together too.
I guess they'd have to learn to get along! I loved being able to see inside the windmill. That was a highlight and turned out be more spacious and bright than I expected. Maybe we can stay overnight in one someday!
really great little side trip... have not done anything like this in 2 previous trips. only saw a couple windmills in Amsterdam and several along the highway while travelling by bus from Brussels. one of my dream trips for the future is just to spend an entire summer in the Netherlands criss-crossing the countryside and immersing myself in that culture!
Hi Vanessa! aww thank you! This is a great day trip and I hope you'll enjoy it as much as we did! Do you know which other parts of The Netherlands you'll be visiting? We also made videos in Amsterdam that are coming soon :)
most windmills, including the ones at Kinderdijk are still operational. Meaning that the mills at Kinderdijk are still the main reason why that land is dry. Yes, there are modern backups for if the mills fail, but those windmills were built to last.
Hi Eileen, we went to this place yesterday. It was really a magical place, super relaxing too! Although there was a mishap with the ferry (they didn’t mention that you have to change at Ridderkerk and take another boat), we still managed to spend some good time there. Thank you for making this video. With love, Farabi & Nasim
Ooh I like the way 'super ultra cozy' sounds. It's like unlocking next level cozy. Glad you enjoyed seeing these windmills! It was really cool to be able to see inside one!
I watched the video yesterday 11-15-2017. I went to bed last night knowing that an accurate "cozy" count had not been provided. I woke up this morning just knowing I had to be the one. I had to step up and do what needed to be done! I had to muster courage, bravery, and fingers! I had to .... Okay, okay ... I counted 6 references to cozy. Don't laugh but I had to run it again because I swore there had to be more. I think the last Marc "cozy" seemed like more than one but he did have a sparkle in his eye as it was said just after Eileen referred to 13 children! Thank you both for this bit of fun. You are great video hosts and good sports to smile. CHEERS!
Mylon, you completely made my day!! Seriously! Thank you for making me laugh with the ingenious way you wrote this! I'm shocked that we only said it 6 times! I agree that the last reference must count for more because of the sparkle ;) Thank you THANK YOU!!
I liked the way the windmills blended with the countryside…So big and majestic in how they move. What an enduring symbol of Dutch ingenuity! Were the Dutch the first to “Hack” the wind? … Modern scientists are still trying hard to make the best use of wind energy! I enjoyed this tour very much. …Loved the man in the wooden shoes too! Thanks for a great video!
That's a good question - I'm not sure if windmills are a Dutch invention or not. They're certainly the country that first pops to my mind when I picture them though. It was cool to see the old ones contrasted with the newer windmills that dot the horizon today. Seeing the wooden shoes in action was a real bonus!
The Greek Heron of Alexandria (10 AD-70AD) is generally credited with inventing a wind driven wheel for power. The Dutch were the first to develop and mass use of the saw mill, allowing them to outproduce the English during several Anglo Dutch wars.
Wow, that's really neat! What a unique and interesting place to spend your childhood. Yes, I'm sure it's changed but I'd be curious how much of it is also still familiar to you.
Well Eileen , the windmills are stil the same and also the surrondings , but the vilage is verry differend with new houses and the house I lived is gone .
Hello Eileen and Marc. Wow you showed the Harp again, nice! still a lot of green there, winter must come later than in Canada .i love this video, nice to see how people lived back in the day in the Netherlands. And why do I keep thinking of Dexys Midnight runners when I see your videos ??? weird LOL.
haha I've had Come On Eileen sung to me a few times in my life ;) Yes, winter is later here and not as white as Canada. Seems to be mostly grey, windy, and wet. That's what made the appearance of a giant rainbow that much more exciting! Yes, the harp/swan/dog is never far in Rotterdam :) I also love seeing how people live - it's fascinating and fun to imagine the huge family occupying the space.
" OH come on Eileen , oh I swear what he means, at this moment...." lol. No snow here in Chatham yet but London had some last week, they can have it! The windmills and the scenery was lovely, and that old stove in the windmill house reminded me of grandfathers place in Dresden, another great video. Stay warm!
I think windmills have just about caught up to lighthouses in my affinity for such iconic structures :) Never seen one in person. Just those white, more modern type thingys ..I think they're not actually windmills anyway..turbines ? Now I may want to start collecting windmill models ( as I have with lighthouses) So, thank you :) Great catch of the rainbows!! Gotta love the quick changing weather out there :) And absolutely fascinating story of how the town got its name!
I'm glad you also found the story fascinating! I love learning about name origins and this place definitely did not disappoint. They have those wind turbines in The Netherlands as well but of course they're so different from the old style. They look cool too, though, especially when there are massive groups of them together. That's neat you collect lighthouses! We saw a beautiful lighthouse at Peggy's Cove one summer. I really love the symbolism of them - a light in the dark, guiding people home. :)
Peggy's Cove in Nova Scotia! I've seen photos of that lighthouse and yes it's gorgeous! I believe I heard it used to function as a post office. And would you believe I wrote a poem about lighthouses (some 10 years ago) and the main theme of it is what you mentioned! A shining light in the dark, guiding people to shore/home through choppy waters. That is indeed one of the reasons I got into them! Amazing :)
Heyy, I'm kinda late to the party here, but check out Wranglestar's Travel vlog on the inner workings of one of there windmills. It's really super interesting! th-cam.com/video/9BjFjKeYKDo/w-d-xo.html
The windmills over time play an important role during the Dutch Golden Age (16th and 17th century) to automate the production of timber that was used the build a large Dutch fleet to travel the world for trade, which eventually lead to an enormous wealth, and even today the Netherlands is still ranked 4th in the world in the area of trade.
As long as they fit well they're very nice to walk on. Also very good for your feet. I used to walk a lot on them, but living in an apartment building now I don't think my neighbors would like that. You still see people here on wooden shoes though. Even in the supermarket.

windmill is that tall grey mil that generates power, not the mills at Kinderdijk. Technically speaking ;) Those are not bunk beds, but box-beds. Or in Dutch 'bedstede'. Farm houses had them as well as it was part of the walls as well, saving space in general. For wanting a mill as your home, those things are expansive in purchase and maintenance. Just a fair warning for your wallet ;) The wooden shoes is mostly to give tourists what they want to see, they are not used as often as in the past. You can buy them yourself as either souvenir or to wear yourself. The man in the video uses them as part of the experience for tourists, basically to show how a miller would have looked like in those days.
Hi there, I wouldn't want to live full-time in a windmill but staying overnight or for a short-term stay would be fun. The beds are indeed a great space-saving idea. Cozy too.
Thank you for visiting my village of Kinderdijk,I was born there 52 years ago and still like it today
Wow, what a unique place to be born and grow up - thanks for sharing that :)

Hi Eileen, we'll spend 4 days in Amsterdam and would like to do the day trip to Rotterdam from there. Thanks!
That sounds fantastic! I loved Amsterdam! Our videos from there are coming out starting tomorrow :) Hope you have a fabulous time!
Those windmills are adorable. Glad you all had fun!
They're so charming! We had a lovely time, even if the weather was a bit weird at first.

I hope you make more videos about the Netherlands, or the windmills there.

Hot air rises, i think the upper floors would be warm as well. Classy water bus.
True. I think I'd still be glad for those closing cubby doors and a warm blanket though! :) It was really neat to see how it's all laid out.
Great vlog about Kinderdijk
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it :)
Windmills, check! Wooden shoes, check! Super ultra cozy video, check! Thanks once again for a great travel video.

I never counted but you can say it all you want since this video oozes coziness!
Agreed! Every time the weather is cold and miserable I think, 'Ok, now the stage is set to get COZY' haha :)
