I'm playing a few other football games too. Probably too many.
One of those other football games is one that I play a few matches in every few weeks or months.
It's Winning Eleven 8: Liveware Evolution. Fully patched into English, complete with Brackley & Brooking as commentators. The commentary is slightly rough in places, but more than decently done.
In this highlights episode we join the action at the end of Season 2, where I've assembled the typical early Master League squad. It's still dominated by Defaults, but contains other players who can make the difference.
The drawback then is that you often struggle to pay the wages bill at the end of the season. And in old school Master League, that can be fatal...

used to love these pre-season matches when money was tight - a couple of wins and suddenly that key player was affordable. WE8 LE was the one where you played online against that friendly Polish dude? I remember playing the start of a Russian ML with their PC adaption of the game, it seemed pretty decent albeit maybe less good than vanilla PES5 for single player
Those tight post-season finances which mandated a string of friendlies to make up the gap were a major highlight of early-season ML... One of many reasons why I'm never without an old-school ML on the go somewhere.
WE8 = PES 4
WE9 = PES 5
It was WE9 (specifically WE9LK - the Korean special edition version of WE9) that I once played with Lukasz online. He was indeed friendly, but committed a major PES 5-related blunder. The conversation:
Him (enthusing about WE9LK): ... and it fixes the main problem with PES 5, which was - ?
Me (flustered): Uh, no crowds?
Him: No.
Me: The way the players would sometimes do stepovers while the ball was running out of play?
Him: No! Come on, it's obvious!
Me (really flummoxed): I give up.
Him: Too many fouls!
Me: ....
WE8 is recommended for a look via PCSX2 or similar, as it is reputedly the best AI of any old-school PES/WE game. After quite a few seasons of ML with it now (this was my 3rd attempt), I'd tend to agree. As much as I love PES 5 and always will its AI could only be described as average on the scale of all football gaming AIs.

@GregDowns Bang on sir, tootling between no mans sky and fallout 4. Settlement building has changed the game for me. Nice to see Mr Hill of Abbeyshire too. Took time yesterday to watch through some old vids of yours NG. Mobile phone stuff too! Thems were the days.
