i think trackers are a good idea. As I know someone who had their caravan stolen. And was found via the tracker. You need to fix it in a place out of site and not tell / show anyone where it is. Hope all goes well with your renovation. Looking forward to the video.
Hi Karen, that GPS tracker sounds like a really great idea. You mentioned about the hot water there. We recently had to replace our gas heater completely here after the old one suddenly started leaking badly. The countryside certainly looks scenic there. Gisborne is one area of New Zealand that I have never visited. In fact, the closest I have come to that area would be on the rail car between Wellington and Auckland. Anyway, wishing you the very best. Robert.
The new outdoor gas hot water tank is working great and we have also set it up slightly higher on a paver to avoid water causing rust underneath, especially when we have heavy rain here. The old one actually lasted us about 20 years, which was quite good.
One of my touring friends caravan got stolen. The "tracker" people suggested to paint the registration number large on the roof. The chance that someone will look on the roof is slim and should they spot it, just another deterrent. Once the caravan get stolen, they can easily spot it from the air. Remember, not only tracker aircraft look for stolen vehicles. They broadcast to all aircraft in a area. For this reason, it's quite common to see large numbers on vehicle roofs.

I live in my caravan and been considering a GPS tracker, especially if it's in my insurance policy. Yes, I too have arrived somewhere and discovered a draw latch that had let go.

Just a quick follow up on my tracker comment. Many apps that work with your tracker allow for a facility called geofencing. This allows you to go into your tracking software and ‘draw’ an area. Should your vehicle enter or leave a defined geofenced area you will get an alert. If this is a facility that appeals to you then check before you buy that the software on your smartphone, tablet etc will support this. Not all trackers are equal so you get what you pay for.
And yes..... water heaters use much more than 400W on mains electric. Does the gas hob and oven work I ask as you seem to have a more far reaching issue than just the fridge. Try a new regulator on the bottle but also look in cupboards as most vans have separate isolation valves for each gas appliance. Yours could be off or partially closed.
Love the tracker idea. Sorry to see that you had a dish casualty, it was time to break out the new dinner ware any way. I also looked at smaller generators that would work for you caravan and was I ever shocked over prices for generators in NZ. Just plain WOW...that might take some saving up for that. Did you ever get the gas regulators checked or serviced? They do go bad from time to time? Any way as always thanks for sharing...Vic
There were a couple of chips on those plates anyway.... That's interesting that our generators are more expensive! I've organised to get the gas checked by a specialist next week😀
Hi Karen re the tracker make sure you put it somewhere hard to get at [normally secured under the van in a hidey hole], as any reasonable thief will have a cheap little scanner that will tell them the van has a tracker, and in your drawer it would be gone within 30 seconds [probably left on site so you think the van/truck is still there. Also although they say it is a GPS tracker, I would be very surprised if it was as a you would need an aerial with a item that small and the fact that when you leave cellphone coverage you lose your track.GPS work of satellite so cover you everywhere. [I just checked their coverage map and it is pretty dismal, the same as your modem/internet] for your tracking check out your google account report - it has all your movements and shows your tracking like the fox. I get mine emailed to me every month, has come in handy a couple of times when I have forgotten where I got an item etc as it tells me how long I stopped anywhere etc.
Just a point to make sure the wheel clamp is installed to the right side of the caravan so that it digs into the ground if someone tried to tow it. Also you could use a bladder for hot water on the roof and let the sun heat up the water for a shower.
Those camping "solar" showers are good for when you're in a bind. Boil up some water, mix in some cold and then hang it up in the shower cubicle. Gives a fairly long shower, you can adjust the flow from the nozzle. They are super cheap. You can also leave them on top of the caravan or car to heat up in the sun.
Hi K, just looked up generators. They make a conversion kit that let it run on bottled gas instead of gasoline. You already carry that and then you wouldn't need to store gasoline to run generator. Just a thought.

Oh gosh! 400 watts is not very much. As far as hot water goes, I have adapted a few things in order to both shower, and do dishes. One of them is by way of a beer keg. It is stainless steel. It had a rubber coating but I took that off. Then I drilled a hole in the bottom, on the side, and installed a valve. I can fill it with water, place it on the stove, and then move it to a higher location, and viola, a shower! It works great.
Does the tracker not use mobile phone system rather than internet for comms ? By default, it's probably not a 'live' tracker but reports location maybe once per hour. So it won't have road detail. Yes, I should have edited my comment to"I"d probably have a 2nd hand one". There is the issue of space as well. Plus you can always put some charge into the batteries from the tow vehicle in an emergency.
A 3Kva generator will supply enough power for everything in your van. Plastic tableware is more resilient and a lot lighter then china plates and they bounce.
This is strange. Apparently you were travelling in an area with no mobile coverage? A normal GPS tracker should not be dependant on mobile coverage in a desolated area. When I use my Gopro Hero 7 in my car, where there is no mobile coverage, it will still track my GPS positions. There are apparently GPS trackers that only depend on mobile coverage, but those are not the real GPS units? A tip, just use plastic plates, utensils and glasses. Their weight is much lesser and much cheaper.
@@lyn1337 A normal smartphone usually has GPS that works outside the mobile network. There are GPS tracker apps with offline maps that you can install that also works without mobile coverage. You start tracking with a "record button" and then it tracks as long as you want, or you press "stop" when finish. I use this combination when I hike in the Norwegian highlands where we dont have mobile coverage.
@@lyn1337 I had a look on the manufacturers webpage. It seems that there are a Pro version of the software that supposedly extracts "telemetry data" from the GPS device which should be the GPS tracking data. According to the manufacturer page the GPS device is supposed to have its own storage memory, so it should be possible to extract GPS tracker data from it regardless of mobile coverage or not. It does not make any sense that it would not do GPS tracking when there is no mobile coverage. Or, send a question to the manufacturer and ask them if the GPS device is supposed to stop the GPS tracking when you loose your mobile coverage.
@@thomasraden Yes indeed it would have the capabilities, but whether it logs the positions in a cache memory for later uplink or not, is questionable. By design it's a security product to locate, in this case the vehicle, and not track a route. Perhaps in set intervals. According to their site the net coverage is poor in that area, if I'm not mistaken!
Travelling K I used to have a pop up camper. I also had a small quite generator. It would run the air conditioner on high speed. It had an automatic throttle that would kick up the RPMs when something heavy started and drop back down to idle after the surge is over. With the AC it had to run full speed all the time , but it was small and not too loud. I would get it. I still have the little generator. It’s not much bigger than a carry on suitcase, has wheels and a pop out handle to make it easy to move. Never a bad thing to have one handy. I read your comment again. You mean a small one on the hitch piped into your propane. Still a good idea.
I'm not so sure that unit is truly GPS, but rather, triangulates by pinging cell towers- which as you discovered, can be wildly inaccurate or nonexistent at times (depending on cell reception). If it truly determines position via GPS satellites, your tracking should be very accurate.
Travelling K over time the diaphragm perish due to water in the gas, if you have two gas bottles you can fit a automatic change over regulator ,when one bottle is empty it changes over to the full one, handy in winter if you are in your pajamas

ps gust have a look under the caravan to see if the gas pipes are not crushed or kinct . sorry about the speling
Oh another great tip! Thank you!
Best to have plastic plates, bowls and cups. Though they might still break, they don’t make a mess.
Ah, but plastic just doesn't feel as homely😀
A 3Kva generator will supply enough power for everything in your van. Plastic tableware is more resilient and a lot lighter then china plates and they bounce.
Tempted to have a generator...
There’s something about China plates that makes it feel more like a home.
Looks like the gps data is transmitted to a server first via mobile data but it fails and it doesn't log them either.
@@thomasraden This one doesn't rely on the mobile network for positioning either, just for the upload.
@@thomasraden Yes indeed it would have the capabilities, but whether it logs the
positions in a cache memory for later uplink or not, is questionable. By design it's a security product to locate, in this case the vehicle, and not track a route. Perhaps in set intervals. According to their site the net coverage is poor in that area, if I'm not mistaken!
That tracker looks a great idea.
I'm glad I got it!
I like the tracker idea. Sorry about your plates. It is always something with traveling.
Ha, yeah, there is always something surprising with travelling.
Its a good system, my car also has the same system, to find the car no problem
Reassuring, isn't it!
Have you thought about your gas problems could be as simple as a new regulator. Had to replace mine once and everything was tickerty boo.
X 2.
Hmmm ok. Something to consider!
Hi Karen,
Not sure if you want it public or not. Your last name comes up in that video. Safe travels. Ken.
I saw that while editing and decided it's really pretty easy to find out my full name anyway.
Seen small propane or gasoline generators on the tongue of the the trailer. Very doable. Please fix your gas fridge and hot water heater.
I am tempted to get a generator... I'm seeing a gas specialist next week😀
Regards your gas issue, You may be a faulty Gas Regulator,
Someone else mentioned the regulator... something to look into!
Travelling K over time the diaphragm perish due to water in the gas, if you have two gas bottles you can fit a automatic change over regulator ,when one bottle is empty it changes over to the full one, handy in winter if you are in your pajamas
Should look on Amazon for a Heavy Duty Wheel Lock Clamp Boot .
Are they hard to take off?
@@TravellingK Ive never used one myself so cant tell you that . I have seen some local contractors use them on their equipment trailers. Here s a review on one th-cam.com/video/QiavQKRDZj0/w-d-xo.html
Where is a thief going to hide a trailer in New Zealand?!
Im still enthralled by NZ. I remember watching your vlogs of the Lake District in the UK, where I grew up, and NZ seems so much more interesting. Safe driving. Looking forward to the next vlog.
Well, I think the UK is interesting😉So much history!
Thats rotten luck with the plates nice to see ur gettin the weather down there unlike us
It's strange with the weather contrasts in NZ right now...
@@TravellingK we have had almost non stop gales and heavy rain it's relentless I've hardly got anything done on outside of the van
how much does diesel cost in NZ
By memory $1. 45 litre approx
Oh need to buy diesel tax from post office as extra
Is this US dollars or NZ dollars
Its very cheap 0.86€ in Finland prize is 1.40€
@@karitolmunen4533 real dollars
With our Queen on one side. And the noble long beaked chicken on the other, kiwi
@charlie cheeseface bloody expensive both countries.
NZ diesel tax is. 07c km but you would need to find out.
Bought transit van few months ago has 7000km of tax on it already
tracker is good idea . can use on all, car, motorcycle, , just make sure you hide it so thieves dont know. however , i bet technology can already detect its presence if thieves are pros. ha ha
Hopefully would be thieves are not pros in NZ! Feel like it's not as common to have a tracker here?!
What the heck are the hot water comments about?
I'm not sure🤣
Why dont you just move to the UK permanently.
Oh yeah!?! Would be fun to follow summer round the world...
If it's a GPS it should cover everywhere with a sky above 🤔
The tracker may use GPS for location, but it might be using cell phone data to transmit the location to the server.
Apparently it’s through the IoT network?!
A device that can't transmit its location at all times is pretty useless.
K,what a challenge to fit a shower into the jnr van!
Haha shall be a challenge!! I do have an idea...
Hi Karen. We had the same dilemma when deciding to heat our hot water? So we've opted for a petrol generator and an electric water heater. We got this combination 12v/230v unit. sustainableoutdoorgear.co.nz/products/duoetto-mk2-digital-dual-voltage-12v-240v-electric-10l-storage-water-heater
Ohhhh good to know! Does look interesting...
Hi, Travel K. I would like the content to be adjusted. Add footage. The atmosphere of the nature of a campsite. Still, having fun at just a short time. Now it is heavy content. It is necessary and should have for the audience to really absorb the atmosphere from the area. As usual I hope you will adjust it. I'm following you. Thank you.
That I do not watch other owners because there is only the face of the caravan owner and the information is not atmospheric. I like the pictures that the caravan went to park in a natural place You used to be different from other channels and I believe you can do it. Thank you.
I usually do film more of the area. But just wasn't planning to have 3 videos at the one campground🤷♀️
Bamboo plates from UK for the win 🇬🇧 😁❤️
We have some Bamboo plates as well, just a nuisance that they don’t like microwaves!
@@paulefc1971 hehe
Glad I had them!
you should leave the music running
Alex Agree, set to a talkback radio station with blinds closed. Thieves won’t know if you are inside or not and likely to move on to find an easier target.
Might work if my truck is still there?
@@TravellingK Good point! Senior moment on my part! We do this with our motorhome, but I guess if your tow car is not there, it is highly likely you are gone too! Doh!
@@TravellingK i suggest a cheap battery powered player. ps death metal music works great
hi just get a cheap solar shower even on overcast days there warm just hang it in a tree and you have a good shower

No I haven’t! Guess it would be a good backup
