I cut the stems down to ground level and if not immediately planting into same soil, leave the roots to decompose in situ thereby adding organic matter into the soil for next season.
Hi Andy, You have done well to have your tomatoes still growing in to November, you have had a good crop this year. Thanks for showing your garden and greenhouse and I hope you have a good turn out next year. As always a great video, take care
I use 3mm paracord for my tomatoes and suport clips at the bottom of the stem to keep the paracord taught. That was a good harvest concidering the weather this year.
Thanks for the update Andy, what a great first year you've had, it's been a tricky year, particularly for outdoor tomatoes, although in the end we didn't suffer too much blight which was a great relief ! Tigerella, Gardeners Delight, Sun baby and Cour Di Bue were our best performers this year although I felt the Sun Baby was disappointing taste wise even if it was prolific ! As we only grow outside we tend to clear the lot by Autumn Half-term and earlier if the plants develop blight, we had lots of green tomatoes but they nearly all ripened on trays in the conservatory and we've just finished the last of them this week ! We ALWAYS grow too many and end up giving many away, but that's not a great problem and the yield was definitely lower this year due to the dull conditions ! Compost looks great, it is THE answer to a great garden so good to get a system established that works for you, turning it will certainly help too !
I grow my toms in the ground in a greenhouse and did when I had an allotment. I've swapped out the soil, (to the extent of the root ball) to avoid a build up if pests and diseases. I always did it, so I don't know if it works, but I've never had a problem with blight etc. The old soil goes where my spuds were, as the plants are related. Be interesting to see how yours fare next year and beyond to see if I'm wasting my time 😊
Really interesting! We shall see. Fingers crossed. Lots of fresh new compost and hopefully a few sharp frosts will break down any remaining bugs in the soil. 🤞
I'd rinse/wash the string before reusing, just in case because tomatoes can be fussy (I admit me too 😂). You've had a fantastic growing season. Thanks for sharing your garden adventures, and can't wait till next year!
If you are not using that bed in the winter, cut down the plants at the base and leave the roots in, then compost mulch over the top, the roots will rot down and the compost on top will feed the soil via the roots
My Grandad grew huge amounts of veg and when he had some Tomatoes left late year, my Grandma did Tomato Consommè, now that is a flavour I cannot forget, a superb way of using up any Tomatoes, regardless of condition. As Yorkshire folk, they were well ahead of their time I reckon.
I’ve often been still picking ripe tomatoes at Xmas. How did you protect your broccoli? I gave up because pigeons and insects completely ravaged them every time and left only stumps
Hey Andy, I'd call that continuing crop of tomatoes a great result! Thanks for the video.
Cheers - quite pleased with that! 😊

Great tip with the paracord! 👍

Cheers and really interesting on the tomato varieties! I'd say my biggest issue has been slugs this year - but luckily the tomatoes survived. 😁

Great tip and saves me digging! 😁

Oh that sounds amazing! Will have a look in to that! 👍
I roasted all of my cherry tomatoes with onion and blended them with coconut milk and spices for a tasty soup.
Oh that sounds amazing!! 😊

I haven't done anything to the broccoli! I planted it out quite late. Just got lucky I think! Although the cabbages were ravaged.
Lovely seeing your progress Andy, very inspiring.
Sun gold, you'll never go back
A few people have recommended that - will add it to the list for next year! 👍
Yes they look good do you have any yellow tomatoes
No yellow tomatoes this year - might next year!
