Hello Learner,
Primary Sources of Microplastics refer to the major ways in which microplastics enter the environment. These sources are the main contributors to microplastic pollution.
Primary Microplastics are already in microplastic form when they enter the environment. They are deliberately manufactured at a microscopic size (e.g., microbeads in cosmetics, synthetic fibers from textiles).
Secondary Microplastics are formed when larger plastic items break down over time due to physical, chemical, or biological degradation (e.g., plastic bags, bottles, and fishing nets breaking into smaller pieces).
So, while primary sources describe where microplastics come from, the categorization (primary vs. secondary) is based on how microplastics exist in the environment-whether they were small from the start or became small over time.
