"Four Kinds of Horses actually began on Richard Russell’s project ‘Everything Is Recorded’. He’s a friend (and founder of XL Records) and he asked me to pop in to his studio. I came up with some chords, melodies and words on top of a groove he was working on. We tried a few things that didn't altogether work and so it laid dormant for quite a while. Then I started playing around with it again and changed the mood and the groove and something else began to emerge with a better chorus."
There were a number of things that triggered ideas for the song as it developed, including the Buddhist parable of the Four Kinds of Horses, which describes different ways a student can approach their spiritual practice. There is also a focus on “the interesting overlap of religion and peace on the one hand and violence and terrorism on the other. There was also a wonderful film by Hany Abu-Assad called ‘Paradise Now’ which shows two young men who end up being trained to become terrorists and it's a real insight into where the head goes.”
Written by Peter Gabriel and produced by Peter Gabriel and Richard Russell, Four Kinds of Horses was recorded at Real World Studios in Wiltshire, The Beehive and Copper House in London.
Continuing the theme of working with a different artist for each song release, this month’s track is accompanied by a cover image featuring the work of Cornelia Parker.
This month we have a fascinating artist, Cornelia Parker, who does some extraordinary work. When we were originally looking at the Art from Us project, I'd seen some of her stuff with exploding rooms and had been fascinated by that, so I'm really happy that she agreed to work with us on this. The photogravure technique of William Henry Fox Talbot was an inspiration for her in this piece, and some of the other glass-based images in the series. I fell in love with this particular work - it's called ‘Snap.’

It is so awesome to be able to go to show of an icon playing new material and not just the old hits. This is what music creation is all about and few established musicians have the courage and the dedication to do it.

Peter is in a league of their own, together with Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Sting and also Steve Hackett and a few others, who are still incredible creative in their 70s :)
Would say so, yes. Controlling apprx. 65-70% of the market (80% of all big shots like PG, U2 etc.) accelerating ticket prices up to 150% without any alternative makes them a monopolist towards the audience. Seems a little bit weird having a guy with Peter Gabriel's messages working for or with them.

Never resting on his laurels, such an innovative artist! Saw him in Glasgow in 1980; got to touch his shoulder and didn't wash my hands for months! Lol Also in Milton Keynes for "Six of the Best" Genesis reunion. And a couple of times at the Hollywood Bowl. Very memorable one with Sting for "Rock, Paper Scissors." Truly one of a kind! Thank you for your contribution to music and the arts!

I wish Peter a wonderful tour with lots of new inspirations for the next album in 2024. I think he climbed up the next professional level in his long musician life. I will see you live on stage with this powerful voice older but better than 50 years ago. It’s funny to thing 50 years back and what we are and what we do in 1973 and the music we hear all this 50 years long. music will ever be a part of us and a good way to a wonderful memory.

I love this new track. PG's voice is great. To my amazement, I've just scored a reasonably priced ticket for the Amsterdam show on 05 June -- 15th row, centrally in front of the stage!
The first time I saw PG live was at Knebworth, England, on 9 Sept. 1978, three months after the release of his second solo album, produced by Robert Fripp. Bizarrely, at Knebworth, then witu a crew cut, PG sang an unaccompanied version of 'Me And My Teddy Bear' clutching a large teddy! Chorus: "Me and my teddy bear. We got no hair, but we don't care. Me and my teddy bear. We love to play and play." Dear reader, you can decide whether "my teddy bear" was a prescient reference to Mr Rhodes or Mr Levin. 🤣
