Improvisation, 4th March 2023

Improvisation is the only medium that escapes the personal.
Many people say that the center of improvisation is 'individual expression', but I can't agree with this. Rather, in the middle of improvisation, we have no choice but to escape completely from personal things.
When I improvise, I face something that is the polar opposite of nature that makes me who I am.
By nature, I prefer controlled situations. I have an aversion to uncontrolled anxiety. Improvisation, however, is the opposite of my nature: it cannot be accomplished without throwing myself into a state of chaos. I am hereby facing the one quality that is my antithesis without any protection. It's not what I want. It would be more appropriate to say that I was drawn to it.
Yet, ironically, at the center of the chaos, when the performance is completely out of my control, I reach a state of ecstasy that I can not feel in any other acts.
즉흥연주는 개인적인 것을 벗어나는 유일한 매체이다.
많은 사람들은 즉흥연주의 중심이 ‘개인의 표현’이라 말하지만 이에 공감할 수 없다. 오히려 즉흥연주의 한복판에서 우리는 우리의 개인적인 것을 온전히 벗어날 수 밖에 없다.
즉흥연주를 할 때 나는 나를 이루는 성질과 너무나도 상반된 극을 이루는 무언가를 마주하게 된다.
나의 성격상 나는 제어된 상황을 선호한다. 통제되지 못한 불안에 대해 거부감을 갖는다. 하지만 즉흥연주는 나와는 반대되는 성질을 갖는다. 즉흥연주는 혼돈의 상태로 몸을 던지지 아니하면 이뤄낼 수 없다. 나는 이로써 나의 대극을 이루는 하나의 성질을 아무 보호장치 없이 마주보고 있는 것이다. 내가 원한 것이 아니다. 무언가에 이끌려 왔다는 표현이 더 적절할 것이다.
하지만 모순되게도, 혼란의 중심에서 연주가 나의 통제를 완전히 떠났을 때 나는 다른 행위에서는 느낄 수 없는 황홀경의 상태에 도달한다.
