Cow manure is the best for your hay fields. I was raised on a dairy farm, and spread alot of manure in my day. Trust me it also builds soil level deeper after some years.

Well done Nathan, don’t worry I’ve worked around heavy machinery for years, and as far as I’m concerned you’re coming along just fine. Remember you’re jumping on and off different machines all the time, so it’s not as if you’re spending all day every day on the same one, also i agree that landscaping in and around the new shed is a great idea. There’s only one person you need to make happy and that’s you. I like your longer videos too, it’s nice to watch you doing different projects on your farm. 👍🏼

Nathan- If you run a plate compactor over that rock, all you're going to do is make it bounce up and down. You need to bind it together. You need to mix some FINES in with it to hold it together. Either mix it with some stone dust which will eventually harden up pretty good or some processed gravel which will help bind it together. Gotta have something that will PACK if you don't want it to move.

Agreed. The 10 ton load appears to have some fines in it, but I don't think enough to compact to the point it's stable.

Hi Nathan, you are doing a great job. Really enjoy your videos. A wee tip from a retired roads engineer. If you tuck the uphill section of the fabric for the swale drain into the soil and bury it, surface water will go over the fabric rather than under it and will exit the area a lot faster. Ian from Aotearoa (New Zealand).

A plate compactor would only bounce on top that rock. 57s won't compact and stay compacted because there's nothing to bind them together. Crusher run, abc, road base, or whatever people want to call it would be what you'd want if you want to compact the rock to keep it in place. I wish I lived closer to you so I could come by and help you out on the grading work you're doing around the new building. If I had gas money I'd make the trip. I'm just about 40 miles north of Charlotte NC. I did residental and commercial grading work for 19 years and would gladly help you out. If you had all the materials we could have got all the grading and gravel done in two days including burying the pipe for the downspouts. What you've got done looks good though and should work fine. 👍

Nathan, your Pole Barn is developing into an attractive addition to the homestead. Looks very pleasing to your eyes.
Get Momma's input on locating small circular flower beds, one each of the three corners of the building facing the road, with a couple/three rose bushes and lower blooming flowers around them. I think that will help with the esthetics of the Barn. These beds will also be a focal point to keep visitors' eyes attracted to the overall beauty of your Barn and not just the enormous size.

Nathan, I hear you about ladders. I spent 35 years working off ladders. When they handed out Covid cash I bought some scaffold for working around the house with my checks. For your ceiling you could get away with 2 sections with wheels. For what it costs to rent a lift you could buy the scaffold. Then you work at your leisure. I have roofing and tree trimming projects to do. I was going to rent a bucket lift.

Put ya clover seeds in your hay fields it helps with soil compaction and give nitrogen to the soil farmers use it as a cover crop then till it in. Its also good in the lawn.
And cows can eat it. So you'll have good hay to sell.

If you use DGA stone and run a compactor over it repeatedly, it packs down like concrete. It's pretty much 57's prior to washing. Makes an excellent base and doesn't roll around.

Nathan. Now that you have more space, you need to make up some 8 ft pallets. It seems in the old building you would pull back lumber and place it on the table. When this built up you put it on floor. Then handled again on to fork blades then restacked on to stickers. With purpose made pallets you are only handling it once. Leave to dry then same pallet into kiln.

Them Beans look wonderful, Yeah you gonna need more rock, I estimate 30 tons to get good coverage, I used to get slurry from local concrete
business its hard to spread but if its stirred up good (to dry) it works great pack it in with track loader sprinkle it some pack some more and it will set up pretty hard. I got it for free just paid for dump truck fee around 200 dollars for about 40 tons. Just a thought

Hey Nathan, Love your vids and your passion for the land. I would suggest to use a General-All-Passing product (that has fines) to level up inside the barn. That hardfill can be compacted. The stone you used makes a good dressing or wearing layer but won’t compact. The swale could be lined with big rock like you suggested but not the small stone. You hang in there buddy!

All you need to do is make a form for your Crete. Line it with some water proof barrier. Rent a weedwhacker looking vibratory get the concrete truck to pour it knock it down with a rake hit it with that weed vibro. It's outside under a mill you don't need her super pretty. Viber should make it level enough to place the mill on. If your really worried about it being super level drag a board across the top of your Crete from side to side of your form and it will screte it flatter.

You’ll need some fines in that rock to tighten it up with the plate compactor.

I've been watching ScrewTube for 14+ years and have never been unsubbed from any channel. I suspect there might be some user error involved with those who do. Of course most of my viewing is on a desktop w/27" monitor, and many exclusively view on a phone. Small buttons on small screens might play into that.

Hey Nathan, barn is looking good! You know, if you are looking to save money, RENT a plate compactor! No need to spend all that money on something that only gets used once or twicw a year.

Nathan a skid steer is a vehicle my goodness 😮 but by the time you have finished the barn, and I am not being sarcastic here, you will be able to set up as a ground works contractor , you're getting better and better with your machinery, As for the World's problems leave them to people who know what they are doing, Politicians spring to mind 🤣🤣🤣

Good progress Nathan. Things look to be coming along fine with the barn. It was good that you were able to get such a fast delivery of the 'rock'. It's just a matter of time now. Looks like you had a pretty good 'drop' of rain, perhaps many drops of rain. Thanks for the update on the barn, cheers, Don from South Australia.

Yeah mate doing a soil test is great. But if your hay paddocks are mostly grass the best fertiliser for grass is chook shit. If you got chook battery close the chook shit will be mixed with sawdust and you apply it with a fertiliser spreader behind your tractor

Glad to hear you mention renting a lift to do the lights and upper electrical. SO much safer and you will safe enough time to pay for the rental. I am no longer a fan of ladders anymore myself.
