Was I the only one who thought about how much it must have hurt the guy playing Jekyll while he was throwing himself around? For god's sake he hit a post on the stage!
I actually think that Hyde's almost telekinetic powers suits the struggle because it shows how much power he has over Jekyll's body. I think it was one of the best versions of the confrontation. I'm just sad at how Hyde was so powerless in the end.
I was all ready to call using separate actors for Jekyll/Hyde a cop-out, but they really went to great lengths to do some creative and surprising stuff with the opportunities it presented.
indeed. it worked well. I mean, I don't get why they cast two different actors. High school students should be capable of doing both parts together. but whatever, directors choice. at least they made it work.
Jayden Crowe I shall answer this question although it is a year old. My personal reasoning behind an actor for Jekyll and an actor for Hyde is due to the fact that, although Jekyll and Hyde are one in the same, a High-schooler cannot perform as a 2 different parts at once, switching back and forth. I tried in my bedroom and I'm a junior. All in all, the idea for 2 different actors is excellent. But, i do not know if it's only for that song or for the entire thing. I imagine that if it is for the entire play, the lights will focus on the expression of the person witnessing the transformation as the 2 actors switch.
What could be an interesting idea is if for only this song, they prerecorded Hyde’s singing, and had another actor dressed as Hyde lipsyncing, while Jekyll is the same actor as in the rest of the show. That way it’s not quite as hard on the Jekyll switching back and forth within the song, and you can get a lot more physical/visual dynamics happening in the number (as opposed to him standing there and sharply shifting his body to one side to indicate which one is singing).
@@tearoses9940 Some performances have done prerecordings, unfortunately it doesn't work well because you have to get both the orchestra and the actor to play perfectly in time with a recording live, which invariably is slightly off every time so sounds horrible. Two actors or quick switching by the actor are the only ways to reliably perform the song well live.
Robin Towers It’s been awhile since I made this comment, and what I’ve thought of recently is if they had 2 actors, but Jekyll still sang both parts as Hyde lipsynced. They’d be seen as 2 different people, but would still have the effect that Jekyll is having the confrontation with himself, since he would still be singing Hyde’s words along with his own.
i never thought i would, but these two make me rather it this way, with the two actors. props to jekyll for his amazing voice and the fact that he literally threw himself onto the floor. wow. phenomenal performance.
same but the original was probably arranged to show the versatility (or "virtuosity" whatever lol) of the actor playing j/h. but i do agree with you, this arrangement is quite entertaining
Prepare to hate me for this, but... This was actually really professional! As much as I love the original scene, I love this one too, the "battle" was really well played out (Like how Jekyll threw himself to the floor and Hyde "jumps on" Jekyll, damn for a high school performance 0-0), and everything just works.
+StaryBlaze Entertainment I actually agree! I was really surprised to see how good this was and I really wasn't ready to accept two actors as Jekyll/Hyde, but damn, the stage battling was actually amazing. It looked like he was in legit pain. :) Like I could never do that. 0.0
Call me crazy but I think the scene works so much better with two actors! Not only is it easier to sing the song that way, but it really highlights just how different Hyde has become from Jekyll, taking on his own identity completely, far advanced beyond Jekyll's escapism in 'Alive'. And the "telekinetic" approach they took here shows the control that Hyde has over Jekyll by this point. Great execution!!
I agree totally, as soon as I heard of the play I thought it would work better with different people playing Jekyll and Hyde. Just look at David Hasselhoff's version; It works, but not very well due to the lack of interaction as he plays both characters and stands still for the entire song, only changing posture. (th-cam.com/video/H1Pyjw_ZnD8/w-d-xo.html -this one) You would have to have some artistic license with the transformation scenes though.
Just one problem: Jekyll and Hyde are supposed to inhabit the body. Therefore it makes more sense to have one actor change from one to the other and back rather than two actors. Also , in order carry it off the way it was done here, you probably need twins.
This is good, but I just have to laugh over what the blocking notes must've been like "And then I just fling myself into the abyss... and then do it again." As actors we put up with a lot of abuse from ourselves in order to put on a performance.
Pardon my French, but I can't get over just HOW FUCKING COOL THIS IS. I know some people aren't fond of the choice to make Hyde and Jekyll two different actors, since both are supposed to be portrayed by the same person, but this scene definitely makes up for it. Jekyll getting psychically thrown around, the cane flip, Hyde launching himself off the stairs, all the blocking was amazing as well as the timing on the lights. My theater side is going into full on fangirl mode over this. Incredible work guys!
Easily one of the best versions I've ever seen, if not the actual best. It's fantastically acted and extremely well sung...I love the different take on this, it's better than most other interpretations, because it shows Jekyll drinking the potion at the end, and his (temporary) victory over Hyde. The power struggle is much clearer here than in the standard version which just shows Jekyll fading into the background after apparently not having done anything to free himself from Hyde. I also really love the fact that the bit was performed by 2 people, it was super intersting to watch! Don't get me wrong, I ADORE the Broadway version of this song, honestly :) This one just really took me by surprise with how clear and dynamic it was, and with the slightly different interpretation. Good job!
mmm,,, i may get hate from this but honestly i feel this is a much better portrayal of confrontation, and actually much better than hasselhoff's performance. ive only just now started watching different versions of this and this one is honestly the best, even more amazing that these actors are high school students just like me. very inspiring.
Anything is better than Hasslehoff's performance... the "Oh dear god!" still cracks me up to this day. Trust me there were actors before him that played the role on broadway. They were much and I mean much better XD I'm pretty sure Hasslehoff was the reason of the shows closing. The show had run four years strong until Hoff came along XD But this video was very good.
***** Actually the original Jekyll/Hyde, Robert Cuccioli was the first one to do it because the director wanted it done that way. Hoff was not the original Jekyll/Hyde. He was after Robert Cuccioli and Rob Evans on broadway.
Broadway_Geek Rob Evans was actually the alternate in Hoff's show. In a sense it was the same show but Evans did much better. Hoffa still beats Sebastian Bach though XD
Denzel Q. Crocker Robert Cuccioli was the first and Rob evans was his alternate before David came and replaced Robert Cuccioli. David was not the original. The choreography was already in place before David came along and David just did a horrible job with it. Rob and Rovert did much better.
This is by FAR the best version of confrontation I have ever seen! Especially the attempt with the "force" thingies which was absolutely splendid! I never liked the versions where the actor just faces in two different directions, it just doesn't have much feeling. But THIS version had pretty much everything I expected from a live action stage play of Confrontation, brilliant!
This is really good! My favorite part is when Jekyll catches the cane and flips Hyde over! It must have been really hectic to block, especially when Jekyll throws himself around the room.
God damn this is good. Like this is an instance of two people playing Jekyll/Hyde going really, really well. The fight was well choreographed, especially for a highschool play (Like goddamn, this people are my age wth)
Interesting concept. I like how when Hyde first starts singing Jekyll seems in pain, and how Hyde can throw Jekyll telekenetically. That part is kink of clever.
SO lovely, I'm obsessed with the creative ideas brought into this. I loved that voice crack at the end. ;v; So lovely. Good job, you two brought so much emotion into this, you must be dead after this scene.
I particularly like how physical it gets, it makes it seem like even more of a struggle for Jekyll to keep Hyde away, plus it just plain makes it look cool.
This was actually extremely well done for a high school performance!!! The choreography of the battle was great and fit the music perfectly!! Kudos to these guys for having great breath control and still sounding good even with all the moving around!! No easy feat!
Handled like this scene. Hyde just enters. For the wedding they stayed with Jekyll throughout. It was all very natural. Most scenes were one actor or the other but some involved both.
All I can say is total chills, this was beyond amazing, the whole thing where you show physical pain as Hyde speaks? I’m in complete love with this version and the actors
Wow that was beautiful Jekyll's voice makes my heart sing and Hyde was perfectly twisted! ^_^ I think I prefer this version with two people. It works so well!
This was ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I love the duality at play here. To be honest, I find this version much more compelling than the 1-person-2-roles approach they used with the Broadway performances. Excellent! Absolutely excellent!
At first I was a little dubious when I saw you had a an actor for both Jekyll and Hyde as I preferred seeing it done a 'solo', but I loved this! The staged falls etc just made this something different and the singing was superb: awesome stuff!
As someone who adores the original novella and has read it many times, I’ve always wondered how separate actors for Jekyll and Hyde in the musical would be like, as Jekyll and Hyde in the novella look and sound completely different. This was phenomenal to say the least. Great job
Absolutely terrific!! :D I was first a bit sceptic to the idea to use two different actors for Jekyll and Hyde, but this is truly amazing!! I love the way they interact with each other. (and the way Hyde tosses around Jekyll like a ragdoll is so intense!) I'm so impressed with both of them! =) And this is one of the best versions of the song I've heard so far. ;)

Wonderful interpretation! I get goose bumps when I hear this! The voices are soul-touching! I'd pay money to see this! Anyone know if and where it's possible? :)
I love this version with all my heart. ah~ also poor jekyll actor, throwing himself in everything and then faceplanting on stairs. Sacrifice of a man. yes.
I like this rendition with two seperate characters, with Hyde affecting Jekyll as he speaks. It's very well done. Also with the two different stage setting was well done as well. And the fight between the two.
Fantastic! I actually think the onstage action makes it more clear as to how jekyll "solved" the problem. When it's one guy it seems to jump from this to the next scene, but this gives the confrontation more resolution. And plus, great singing to boot. Well done!
In my school play, we only had one guy play both of them, and every time he changed perspectives, he had to act like he was convulsing in pain. Nevertheless, I still feel like he did a very good job.
I love this version. Finally, they did one when they used two actors. One as Jekyll and the other as Hyde. I also loved how Hyde jumped onto Jekyll. Though Hyde's Cane doesn't really look like it could murder five people.
What a refreshing change to the staging of this song. Though I missed Jekyll's "nooo" parts during the chorus - that would have been a sweet overlap that I've only heard made possible in Warlow's recording wherein they mix the two voices together so they sing at the same time
THAT WAS SPECTACULAR!!! how on earth did they have the breath support to sing that while throwing themselves across the stage?? I kinda like the people who have Jekyll and Hyde be the same person, but I enjoyed seeing it done this way none the less. regardless, these two young men have AMAZING talent!
Hiring identical twins would be a very interesting move for Jekyll and Hyde for them to sound very similar and the surprise to the audience seeing them both in this scene battling each other.
btw, i love jekyll flying around the stage fighting with hyde. it's so dynamic! great job! i honestly didn't think i would like this, but i thoroughly enjoyed it. note to jekyll, i know it's hard to hit that high note at the end after flinging yourself around onstage for 3 1/2 minutes. however, work on your support so it doesn't sound forced. scene was fantastic. another note to jekyll, i could hardly belive you were in high school. great job!
Ok, I couldn't leave this video again without this: 1. Guys! Are you okay?! They were just hitting and falling around, poor guys "specially the one who plays jekyll" 2. Well, it turns out that Hyde was a Jedi omgggg 3:38 Don't mess up with Dr. Jekyll guys, he's black belt on karate 4. Again, are ok guys? Great, great, great performance!!!!
wow, i started a storybord for this song last week and it's eerily similar to this despite the fact that i have never seen this video before untill now.
I love the idea of using separate actors but showing that Hyde is part of Jekyll. It’s truer to the book (they looked different) and I think the actors were able to do better because they weren’t struggling to do both parts justice. This may be one of my favourite performances of the Confrontation
Fun Fact: The first version of the musical to be performed live actually had the actor for the Bishop play Hyde during Confrontation (only for Confrontation the rest of the show Jekyll/Hyde was played by one actor) I Personally think that the best way to perform this song is a mixture of the 1995 Pre Broadway tour (Having Hyde be a Projection/video with prerecorded audio) And the Normal Broadway "Hairflip" Hyde would start as a prerecording but by "I'll live inside you forever" Jekyll turns to Hyde and they do the Hairflip for the rest of the song.
Okay, I thought this was gonna be strange with two people playing this song, but this is actually pretty good! The coriograph was cool and the timing was good and beleivable when they were fighting. Just one thing... 3:21 after Jekyll's big note, does he untentionally hit his head? 😆
Was I the only one who thought about how much it must have hurt the guy playing Jekyll while he was throwing himself around? For god's sake he hit a post on the stage!
And at the end he hit his head on the stairs! Poor boy, that must have hurt.
No, you certainly weren't. And goddammit, it hurts more than you think (My theater director is an idiot)
That's some dedication though
Oww god...why Is It Always the head 😥...
Wfq Is that?! Of course It must have hurted! Like banging the head and the back everywhere!
Gator stage combat

no it isn't, it's a school production of Jekyll and Hyde (not sure which school off of the top of my head)

Given their checkered history, bronies probably faced greater opposition than any other fandom out there. As such, bronies have been kind of forced- out of a necessity to find some sort of an understanding- become the rather open and welcoming fanbase they are.
If you don't like bronies, that's fine.
If you don't like MLP, that's also perfectly fine.
But there's no need to go out of one's way to start a fight for the sake of proving the superiority of your opinion to someone who could be halfway across the world, for all you know.
Im crying, this is beautiful. A great performance by far. Great job to the guys in this, their voice was absolute heaven.
Beautiful performance
This is excellent such great performance of this song!
Wonderful interpretation! I get goose bumps when I hear this! The voices are soul-touching! I'd pay money to see this! Anyone know if and where it's possible? :)
I love this version with all my heart.
ah~
also poor jekyll actor, throwing himself in everything and then faceplanting on stairs. Sacrifice of a man. yes.
Bloody awesome! The way they fought was fantastic.
I like this rendition with two seperate characters, with Hyde affecting Jekyll as he speaks. It's very well done. Also with the two different stage setting was well done as well. And the fight between the two.
Awesome performance
Fantastic!
I actually think the onstage action makes it more clear as to how jekyll "solved" the problem. When it's one guy it seems to jump from this to the next scene, but this gives the confrontation more resolution. And plus, great singing to boot. Well done!
This was freakin AWESOME! It's the best version I've seen so far! Thanks.
In my school play, we only had one guy play both of them, and every time he changed perspectives, he had to act like he was convulsing in pain.
Nevertheless, I still feel like he did a very good job.
I love this, truly TWO!
Holy SHOOT! Both guys are ACTING GOALS
There voices are amazing
The set is beautiful.
Oh My God this is amazing! I am really impressed that this is a high school play! Great!
Glad to see someone finally do the music from the concept album
I love this version. Finally, they did one when they used two actors. One as Jekyll and the other as Hyde. I also loved how Hyde jumped onto Jekyll. Though Hyde's Cane doesn't really look like it could murder five people.
Must be a strond wood
Love how they throw each other around the stage, like Hyde uses the force and Jekyll flips him around with his cane. Freakin beautiful XD
seeing this even now I feel like this is a great way of showing a power struggle by having two look a like actors do this,
I love how Everytime hyde tries to hit Jekyll with his can Jekyll grabs it than gives it back to him.
This is brilliant.. I love that you get to see both of them fighting each other! Can more productions do this?!
I got goosebumps, Jekyll's actor is hella talented with those moves 👏
Hiring identical twins would be a very interesting move for Jekyll and Hyde for them to sound very similar and the surprise to the audience seeing them both in this scene battling each other.
2:16 this was sexy 😏😏ship jekyll and hyde now
This is amazing! Wonderfully performed, wonderfully choreographed, wonderfully sung; fantastic performance!!! :)
Impressive performance, & direction! I have long wondered how it might be, if the two personalities were played by two separate actors! Bravo!
btw, i love jekyll flying around the stage fighting with hyde. it's so dynamic! great job! i honestly didn't think i would like this, but i thoroughly enjoyed it.
note to jekyll, i know it's hard to hit that high note at the end after flinging yourself around onstage for 3 1/2 minutes. however, work on your support so it doesn't sound forced.
scene was fantastic. another note to jekyll, i could hardly belive you were in high school. great job!
Ok, I couldn't leave this video again without this:
1. Guys! Are you okay?! They were just hitting and falling around, poor guys "specially the one who plays jekyll"
2. Well, it turns out that Hyde was a Jedi omgggg
3:38 Don't mess up with Dr. Jekyll guys, he's black belt on karate
4. Again, are ok guys?
Great, great, great performance!!!!
Did you mean 2:38? For one, there is no 3:38. For another, 2:38 would make sense.
This is so good, it actually felt real and I'm really concerned by the Jekyll actor qwq
one of the most amazing things i have ever seen\
wow, i started a storybord for this song last week and it's eerily similar to this despite the fact that i have never seen this video before untill now.
INCREDIBLY talented Jekyll. PLEASE continue doing theatre.
it gives me chills watching this that was how good the acting was
I love the idea of using separate actors but showing that Hyde is part of Jekyll. It’s truer to the book (they looked different) and I think the actors were able to do better because they weren’t struggling to do both parts justice. This may be one of my favourite performances of the Confrontation
Fun Fact: The first version of the musical to be performed live actually had the actor for the Bishop play Hyde during Confrontation (only for Confrontation the rest of the show Jekyll/Hyde was played by one actor)
I Personally think that the best way to perform this song is a mixture of the 1995 Pre Broadway tour (Having Hyde be a Projection/video with prerecorded audio)
And the Normal Broadway "Hairflip"
Hyde would start as a prerecording but by "I'll live inside you forever" Jekyll turns to Hyde and they do the Hairflip for the rest of the song.
Okay, I thought this was gonna be strange with two people playing this song, but this is actually pretty good! The coriograph was cool and the timing was good and beleivable when they were fighting.
Just one thing... 3:21 after Jekyll's big note, does he untentionally hit his head? 😆
Haha true I didn't notice that
oh my god this is incredible! so much better than any other version. great job!!!
