Carnatic learning would start with Ragas, western will start with composers pieces, it would come eventually to incorporating what you learnt into playing Bollywood. There are some who teach songs directly, bit they will follow wither carnatic or western system. Also tuning and notation systems are different. So basically both are fine, it comes down to preference.
