My great grandfather fought in this campaign. He respected the Ethiopians a lot and used say they fought like lions. He used to recount of the horror he went through over there. Lack of food, firing squads, violent hand to hand combat, and all of the dead bodies caused by artillery and the gas. He thought it was a meaningless war and had nothing but respect for the Ethiopians but had no choice. It was a dark period in my country’s history but it’s important that it won’t be forgotten, and to respect the fallen on both sides. 🇪🇹 🇮🇹

I know this documentary and the narration doesn't end on 9th of May 1936 at Mussolini's triumphant speech from the Palazzo Venezia, claiming that 'Italy finally has its Empire' as this version shows. The full movie shows when Ethiopian sovereignty is restored with the Emperor's triumphant flying of the Ethiopian tri-color in Addis on the same day 5 years later (9th of May 1941). I saw this documentary 2 decades ago from a VHS video loaned from the British Council, but I still remember the final words of the narrator, "Mussolini never saw Ethiopia." This version doesn't end that way, and it seems deliberate.
Thank you for sharing that information Aydagne. If I were to find the missing footage I would update this documentary immediately. Italian Fascists and their Ertirean, Somali and Libyan Askaris committed many war crimes in Ethiopia. Yet the blameless Ethiopian still don't hate these people.

The Italians were cruel European colonizers who committed war crimes against the people of East Africa in general and Ethiopia in particular. However, the Abyssinians were and still are very ruthless black colonizers who took part in the scramble for Africa. It would have been much better for many people in Ethiopia to have been colonized by the Italians than to be conquered and colonized by the primitive and backward empire of Abyssinia.Just ask the Ogadenis and Oromos. The Europeans went home and all of those African colonies became free and independent countries but we are still stuck with the perpetual misery of Abyssinia!
@I.B. Adam The oromo are barbaric nomads who settled in Ethiopia in the 1600s and onward during the ethioadal war ,both adal and Ethiopia were weakened so the borders were wide open, the oromos genocided the biggest agricultural group in east africa (called harla) who were semito-cushitic speakers like their harari and Eastern gurage who mostly lived in central and eastern ethiopia , gafat another semitic speakers who lived in western ethiopia and maya a cushitic chritsian/pagan tribe that were affiliated with the ethiopian empire who lived in pockets from sidama to tana so oromos dont have any moral highground to speak of infact they are occupying land that doesnt belong to them and they need to return to kenya (their home land) And for ogaden a 2nd-4th century axumite inscription mentions areas in ogaden like hawd,.. as part of their territory the inscription includes accurate description of the areas geography , ogaden was a tributary state to the emirate of harar (harar is ethnically habesha but muslim) so when minilik took harar he considered ogaden a part of harar and took it as well, plus there wasnt really any authentic Somali national state when ethiopia took ogaden so on what basis does somalia claim that ethiopia took territory from it,when somalia wasnt even a state when ogaden was annexed if u are referring to the british giving back the areas taken from ethiopia by the italians in ww2 and given to the somali part of their territory, that doesnt make sense since ethiopia had it before ww2 even before ww1 ethiopia had it at the times of minilik so claims made in this regard are utter bullcrap and only support colonialists like f@sc1st italy and their evil agenda to weak ethiopia

@Frida Khalo Ethiopia has the oldest and purest religious traditions including one of the oldest versions of the Bible. Her heritage is envied by the nations which is why fascist Italy was aroused to attack Ethiopia so that they could erase the true history and proclaim the pope to be the vicar of Christ because the Vatican understands the significance of the Solomonic Dynasty. The Ethiopian Empire is also located in the strategic "Horn of Africa" and Italy was seeking redemption after their loss at the Battle of Adowa in 1896 which secured Ethiopia's sovereignty.

+Petar Rome wanted Ethiopia because Ethiopia is the holy land. the harassment and outright invasion of Ethiopia goes long way back to the first christian emperor of Rome. Not too sure about some of the details here, but I am not a historian, the narrative seems slightly skewed in some places, but's it's to be expected, and since I was not there. The league had put a ban on purchasing of weapons on both sides. Of course Italy had it's shit already and the backing of its European friends, if in secret, that would not have stopped them getting more, but of course Ethiopia had no such support. And of course the "wikileaks" of the times revealed that Britain and France made a secret pact to "give" Ethiopia to Italy..."give" A country fully functioning with people they were going to "give" it, like other places that will remain nameless that the British "gave" to others and war cannot end...."Until the philosophy..."

I can see in the video why Ethiopia is defeated in this second Italo - Ethiopian War of aggression. I believe Haile Selassie sees it too. Instead of taking the time to organize themselves and their army they still resort to old ways of fighting war, guerrilla's method of warfare while Italy is possibly working on ways of defeating the African nation, by beefing up their army and training them for even a bigger war in Europe. However, Europeans during colonial era are biased and very brutish and make sure they occupy Africa by all means possible, even if it takes eliminating all the people through genocide. The League of Nations is the most biased when it comes to this particular war where the most important nations of the body supported the Italian invasion while few nations like Mexico, China, New Zealand, etc recognised the rights of the Ethiopian people. It is shame some African nations like Egypt, Somaliland, Eritrea and Libya have to fight on the side of the Italian. In the past Egypt even tries to invade and take over Ethiopia in its conquest of neighbouring lands and it fails abysmally to accomplish that. I sympathise with the Ethiopians for being the people who deserve not to be massacred by the so called civilised people from far away land but more savage in nature than the people they called savages. After all it is clear Ethiopia is destined not to be colonised in any way like the other Africans nations and remained so till today. Ethiopia is a pride to Africans.

Michael Getchaew It seems as though the documentary ends as soon as the Italians took Addis Ababa. What the movie didn't document was the fact that His Majesty continued to submit evidence to the League to show that the conquest wasn't complete and that the Italians eventually lost the war. "As a result of their rapid advance with the help of airplanes and poison gas, the Italians took Addis Ababa on May 5th, 1936, but the Ethiopians were never conquered. The resistance continued unabated, His Majesty while in exile submitted evidence to the League time and again to indicate the incompleteness of Mussolini's boast of the conquest of the country. Indeed, the civil administration of the Emperor's Government was actively maintained in a substantial part of the Empire. That this fact was recognized could be gleaned from Lord Cecil's words in the Lords when British recognition of Mussolini's loot raised high protest in both Houses of the British Parliament. He said: "When you come to recognize a new Government over territory which it did not have before, two things have usually been thought essential, in the first place that the conquest of that territory has been complete; and secondly that it has lasted a sufficient time to make tolerably certain that the conquest is going to be permanent. I see no evidence that either one or other of these conditions have been fulfilled in this case." (Silver Jubilee p. 28).
Ethiopians was a world power alongside Rome, Persia and China. Even they were in Venice 600 years ago getting along with Italians. Ethiopia fell from it's high position due to different factors but the citizens weren't considered less civilized then Europeans until the colonial period brought a change in attitude.

"From this point of view, i.e. thinking of a political opponent, my most emotional and moving meeting was with Haile Selassie. We must remember that it was we Italians who waged war against the Negus Neghesti, who invaded his country, and who my uncle Amedeo was later Viceroy of Ethiopia. But I knew that once he returned to the throne of Judah, Haile Selassie had spoken of Amedeo of Aosta as 'a man of generous goodness and enlightened wisdom' and that he had behaved towards Italians with intelligence and understanding. I wanted to go and visit the places where my uncle had fought and had been taken prisoner. The Amba Alagi above all. In 1968, the publisher Rusconi organized a trip for me with the journalist Alfredo Ferruzza and I remembered that in 1930 the Negus, who had just been appointed emperor, that is to say became Negus Neghesti, King of Kings, had received the Collar of the Annunziata from Vittorio Emanuele III at the hands of the duke of the Abruzzi. The relationship between the two Royal Houses had taken place through an Aosta. So I write a letter to the emperor of Ethiopia; being a Collare dell'Annunziata, I address it to the 'Imperial Majesty and dear cousin'. The answer comes to me immediately through the Ethiopian ambassador in Rome: Haile Selassie let me know that it will be a real joy for him to welcome the Duke of Aosta in Addis Ababa. At this point the visit became official and the Foreign Minister of the time, Pietro Nenni, took care to give me some excellent advice on how to deal with the Emperor of Ethiopia and some of the most important ras to further improve relations between the two countries: certain scars caused by the war had not yet healed completely... Finally I leave with my wife Claudia and two friends to Massawa. Here the Emperor awaits us, in the same building where Uncle Amedeo also lived, a beautiful white villa by the sea. We arrive there escorted by eight motorcyclists. At the entrance, an entire company presents me with arms: more than I would have had if there had still been a monarchy in Italy. The Emperor welcomes us halfway down the access stairway and not at the top, a homage that he had not even paid to Queen Elizabeth. We give him the three bows required by protocol, and my wife curtsies her. We enter a large room and we speak in French as I was advised to do. There were various ras and the Negus tells me: 'His uncle, Duke Amedeo of Aosta, was a great gentleman who only did good for my country. Do you think that from the Queen of Sheba to today my empire had never been totally pacified as when the Duke of Aosta was its Viceroy? Here the Italians have left excellent memories: roads, schools, bridges, hospitals that we still use.' He never spoke of the war and the losses it cost his people. Before leaving me, he asked me with a smile: 'But are you a prince like those of the European royal families who do nothing from morning to night, or do you work?'. Then he wanted me to continue the journey on his personal plane. I visited all the main cities of Ethiopia, then on foot I climbed up to Amba Alagi which is 3411 meters high, to be exact. I saw Haile Selassie a second time in 1970 when, on a road trip from Cape Town to the North Cape, I passed through Addis Ababa. This time the Negus Neghesti received me in a less official way: in the private drawing room of the Imperial Palace; he was surrounded by innumerable chihuahuas, those tiny dogs: they were everywhere: on the sofa, on the armchairs, on the carpets. The following year, being in Italy, the Emperor let me know that he would like to see me. We agree for Venice, at the Danieli hotel. Here I give him a commemorative plaque of the first non-stop flight from Rome to Addis Ababa made by General Zappetta with a single-engine Nardi Fiat. We are alone and he thanks me in Italian. To my astonished reaction he, with an amused air, lowering his voice, explains to me: 'I speak your language, but nobody knows it and nobody has to know it. You see, I often had to parley with the Italians and with the interpreter's excuse, first I listened to the speeches they made to me, then, while the interpreter translated, I had time to meditate on the answer. Not only that but I also had the possibility to check if my answer was translated correctly'. He loved Dante very much and knew many passages of the Divine Comedy by heart. Referring to certain difficulties I had with some people, he told me: 'Don't worry about them but just look and pass'. I asked him why he sent so many students abroad, even to the Soviet Union, knowing full well that many of them, by associating with enemies of his regime, would turn against him. And he replied: 'I know, but I still think I'm doing the right thing: young people absolutely must know the world, open their minds to face the 2000s. We cannot stand still, we must look to the future. So even if one day all this becomes a boomerang, it falls back on me... it doesn't matter: Ethiopia must progress'. Everything that Haile Selassie had to suffer later, if it wasn't really provoked, was at least encouraged by the Ethiopian students who returned to their homeland." di Savoia-Aosta, Amadeo.

But Ethiopia was colonized. The Italian flag flew over Addis when they conquered and you became part of Italian East Africa until England came and saved you. Why do Ethiopians not like to admit this?
@@TheNexusMind Because it's not true LOL. 1/4 of Ethiopia was still in patriot hands after the fall of Addis Ababa. Still causing massive damage to Italian military assets. The planes conducting several hit and runs on Italian Military Depots.

RESTORE ETHIOPIAN MONARCHY!
35:00 at Harar the Somali interpreter for Haile says , " this wreath is laid down in memory of our fallen hero army soldiers who died in the defense of this nation".
@I.B. Adam
The oromo are barbaric nomads who settled in Ethiopia in the 1600s and onward during the ethioadal war ,both adal and Ethiopia were weakened so the borders were wide open, the oromos genocided the biggest agricultural group in east africa (called harla) who were semito-cushitic speakers like their harari and Eastern gurage who mostly lived in central and eastern ethiopia , gafat another semitic speakers who lived in western ethiopia and maya a cushitic chritsian/pagan tribe that were affiliated with the ethiopian empire who lived in pockets from sidama to tana so oromos dont have any moral highground to speak of infact they are occupying land that doesnt belong to them and they need to return to kenya (their home land)
And for ogaden a 2nd-4th century axumite inscription mentions areas in ogaden like hawd,.. as part of their territory the inscription includes accurate description of the areas geography , ogaden was a tributary state to the emirate of harar (harar is ethnically habesha but muslim) so when minilik took harar he considered ogaden a part of harar and took it as well, plus there wasnt really any authentic Somali national state when ethiopia took ogaden so on what basis does somalia claim that ethiopia took territory from it,when somalia wasnt even a state when ogaden was annexed if u are referring to the british giving back the areas taken from ethiopia by the italians in ww2 and given to the somali part of their territory, that doesnt make sense since ethiopia had it before ww2 even before ww1 ethiopia had it at the times of minilik so claims made in this regard are utter bullcrap and only support colonialists like f@sc1st italy and their evil agenda to weak ethiopia
@@AMR_k400
The problem with your argument is that you are just regurgitating the fake history that was told and retold by your barefoot and illiterate neftegna forefathers. It’s not going to fly because it’s a lie.Oromos are native to their own country and they are here to stay. The Abyssinian empire came to Ogaden in early 20th century and the Somalis never stopped fighting the occupiers since then. The British empire enabled Menilik and his bottom-feeding Abyssinian empire to conquer Ogaden as late as 1955.That is a fact!

Though the US and other European powers were worried by Mussolini's invasion of Ethiopia they didn't oppose it too much as if an African power defeated a (white) European colonial power there, who knows what would happen in the rest of Africa?
If England and France sent arms and support to Ethiopia, then Italy and Germany may have felt justified to send arms and support to Algeria, or the Gold Coast or many, many of the other countries which were occupied by Europeans in Africa.

Why was Italy so concerned with gaining Ethiopia?
Thank you. It seems like a mighty well equipped army against a group of barefoot tribal men and not nearly so well equipped in arms. The fact that they already where Christian confused me when I saw the catholic blessing over the Italian troops. The United Nations ignoring Haile Sellasie pleas, a terrible story of human rights violation and sovereignty in the never ending wars
Mustard Gas!! They have no shame
+Petar Rome wanted Ethiopia because Ethiopia is the holy land. the harassment and outright invasion of Ethiopia goes long way back to the first christian emperor of Rome. The fact is that the concept of God as well as the bible originates in Ethiopia; the Bible was originally written in Ge'ez aka Aramaic and to this day the only true, authentic and original bible is the Ethiopian bible.

How did Italy Lose to Ethiopia? (1895) | Animated History
They all were United together against teaching Ethiopia 🇪🇹 lessons, for defeating the white men, and also to teach all the African men so they would not get any idea standing up against the white man.

Ethiopia has defeated Italy twice,This documentary is trying to say or fever Italy as Italy won the second Italian evasion to Ethiopia which is not true. Ethiopia is the independent country in Africa never been colonized by western power or any other
Michael Getchaew It seems as though the documentary ends as soon as the Italians took Addis Ababa. 28).
Hope u all noticed Ethiopia was civilised..
Ethiopians was a world power alongside Rome, Persia and China. Even they were in Venice 600 years ago getting along with Italians.
Ethiopia fell from it's high position due to different factors but the citizens weren't considered less civilized then Europeans until the colonial period brought a change in attitude.
The Jamaicans don't sing about the Askaris from Somalia and Eritrea who fought against Mother Ethiopia. There is no honor in cowardice, no honor in fighting against your own people in service of your colonial master. That is why Ras Tafari, Haile Selassie will forever remain one of the symbols of black and African pride, continuing in the tradition of Emperor Menelik. Africa unite. One love.
Somalis and Eritreans weren't Ethiopian for you to say (Mother Ethiopia) since Ethiopia was a coloniser herself against Somalis and Eritreans. Ethiopia had a pact with Britain to joinlty colonise Somali lands in Haud and Ogadenia and then collaborated in helping Italy colonise southern Somalia from 1900 onwards. No. It was not an easy task going against Ethiopia. They are better warriors than any nation. Next to them are Jamaicans (Maroons) then the British.

no body fight like Ethiopians .......give them few planes and tanks and the outcome would have been different.
The outcome was hugely embarrassing for Italy, having fought an enemy with almost no modern weapons at all and having to use WMD to win any part of the fight.
LOL Ethiopia DID have a "few planes and tanks" and artillery, machine guns, trucks...Infact Ethiopia received tonnes of weaponry, munitions and supplies from Nazi Germany. Also include military advisors from Russia, France, etc and Ethiopia STILL lost. Many Ethiopians like Ras Mangascia joined Italy. Ethiopia stood no chance against mighty Italia! Forza!
Everyone could kick Russia's ass back then.. unless you tried to storm deep inland during winter.

How does The Duke Of The Abruzzi fit into this historical narrative?
Deciding factor that won the Italians this war was the Tanks and the air planes!

@@NoName-hg6cc Look up the Christmas Offensive of 1935, Italy was about to get their shit rocked just like the battle of Adwa. They used poison gas to avoid encirclement.
@@samsmotzzz2171 Ahahahahahaha no, they never managed to take the entrenched positions despite the numerical superiority and once Italians regained the equal foot Ethiopians had nothing left.
Read about the Bono offense: he did need gas nor did Graziani when he turned defense into offense
@@NoName-hg6cc I basically said, "THEY WERE ABOUT TO" you can't even deny that De Bono was a horrible general; the Italians had to make a retreat, for even their special forces were getting wiped out. It's only when Badoglio came in and bitched out to use gas that Ethiopia was pretty much screwed.
@@samsmotzzz2171 The fact he may have been a horrible general it doesn't mean Ethiopians really got the upper hand: they didn't and Italians kept the control of the battlefield even without gas
The League of Nations(1920-1946)meant well but unfortunately failed.
Very biased video. It doesn't show an Ethiopian army's win over Italians even though they were the ones who humiliated the Italian army with all their modern artillery.
What win? When? And Ethiopia had modern weapons in both, in the first war BETTER than Italy's weapons plus outnumbering Italians 10-1. In this war it was the ALLIES that liberated Ethiopia, NOT Ethiopians.
@@spaniardsrmoors6817 Ethiopians fought alongside the allies. Ethiopians never gave up! Militias throughout the country continued to fight until the very end. One of the most notable leaders of these militias was Abebe Aregai. He nearly returned Addis Ababa to Ethiopian control 2 months after the Italians entered the city. Italy did destroy our country but our resilient spirit and faith in God led us to victory in the end. Haile Selassie triumphantly returned to his throne while Mussolini's people lynched him in the streets of Milan.

@@BW-fz5kf I know, but without the allies they were unable to oust the Italians. Much simpler when you have dozens of allied countries vs 1.
@@spaniardsrmoors6817 The Ethiopian resistance left the majority of the country outside of Italian control. The only places in Ethiopia (not counting Eritrea) that was under Italian control were Addis Ababa, Harar, Mekele, and Axum. The majority of the country did not live in these areas so they remained free from Italian administration. A key part of colonization is pacification and administering the people. Italy could not achieve this, so for this reason Ethiopia stayed independent.
@@BW-fz5kf 1. So they controlled the Capitol and the most important strategic areas. 2, The majority did not live there because they fled to safer areas. 3.
