  • In today's video Dan Sharifi @ Cichlids of the Americas discusses the red form of the wold cichlid, Parachromis dovii. A naturally occuring color form of the Costa Rican dovii cichlid.
    Where did it come from?
    How did it become established in the trade?
    Does it breed true?
    Does it get as big as normal coloured dovii cichlids?
    How do I raise them? Breed them? and where can I get them?
    All these questions and more shall be discussed today.
    Enjoy!

    Wow great to see Red Dovii in US, here in my home country Costa Rica, Doviis are understimated as a aquarium fish. Just last week knew one of this red morph.
    Beatiful fish.

    Actually, based on "GuapoteMel" at th-cam.com/users/GuapoteMel, the red form of the dovi was seen by him over decades ago. I've have to go back to see the video again, but I think he mentioned that the red form was what was originally sent to the states.

    • @awakenedanarchism4202
      @awakenedanarchism4202 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it would have to be a massive tank to have that many Doviis living together some what peacefully Sir

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes Todd, as mentioned the chances of having a group live together is very VERY small. Once makes sex out they are extremely intolerant of each other. A standard 180 or bigger would work for a pair however structure, hides, etc... would have to be provided for the decidedly smaller female to take refuge where the male could not reach her. If you can find that balance you may have success. I say may as large Parachromis and their pair bonds in a closed environment such as an aquarium can often strain and either can turn on the other with disaster outs results. Regardless they make for outstanding visual specimens.
      Thanks for watching my friend

    • @snstx7872
      @snstx7872 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would probably need a Olympic sized swimming pool to keep that many adult Sized dovi together successfully.

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree 100%. I’m the same way with snook. The orange form was always so prevalent compared to the natural green form. I’m very much a purist and like the natural form. However this is a natural occurring form just not my cup of tea. But the story I do find fascinating.
      I’ve kept both the Nicaraguan and Costa Rica forms of dovii over the years. I love the Costa Rican form far more than the other.

    • @themadaquarist
      @themadaquarist  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The DNA sequencing has been done at the university of Florida and it’s pure just an anomaly of nature. Had the originally capture ones been left in the wild the likelihood of them surviving long term would be highly unlikely
