I love your mom’s honest observations and the 2 positive things that she pointed out are exactly the 2 things Malaysia are known for (in a positive light) ie food and people. It warms my heart and made me shed a little tear (I’ve been following her journey since she got here) towards the end of the video.
Two things I want to comment on :
    1. Motorcycle jackets were worn that way because normally the wind and the rain will hit the rider from the front side. It’s too warm and too restrictive to totally button the jackets up
    2. I agree that even in the capital city, Malaysia is not handicapped and pedestrian friendly. I think the issue was raised a few years ago but nothing happened.
    3. I chuckled at the big spoon comment. I think (I could be wrong), the amount of rice we put in our hand is even more than what we can fit on the big spoon. So actually, for us, the spoon is not big enough 😅
Anyway, I’ve only ever followed your videos since you brought your mom here. Her experience is such a joy to watch. I hope mom and dad enjoyed their time in Malaysia and would come again.

Malays usually eat with the right hand. What is the rationale and why do Malays eat with their hands? This question was answered easily at the end of the 19th century by a royal relative of Kedah who lived in Selangor named Tengku Kudin. This matter was told by a wife of a high-ranking British officer who served in Selangor at that time in her book "Chersonese - The Guilding Off" by Emilly Innes.
One day Tengku Kudin was invited by the British Resident to attend a dinner at the resident's house. When all the invited guests were ready to face the meal, Tengku Kudin suddenly got up towards the water tap and washed his hands. Ignoring everyone else's use of spoons and forks, he lazily fed food into his mouth with his hands...!
Tengku Kudin's antics were noticed by an English woman who happened to be sitting next to him. Feeling intrigued by Tengku Kudin's behavior, the woman then asked: "Why do you eat with your hands? Isn't using a spoon and fork cleaner and more polite?"
Tengku Kudin sloppily answered loudly and could be heard by others. He said:
"I eat with my hands for at least three reasons:
    First:
I know my hands are cleaner than spoons and forks because I wash them myself - no one else. The spoon and fork were washed by other people who were not necessarily clean enough.
    Second:
I'm sure my hands are cleaner because I'm the only one who uses them - never borrowed by someone else, whereas the spoon and fork are used by many people
    Third:
I believe my hands are cleaner because they never fall down the drain...!!"
Tengkun Kudin's answer left everyone who heard it speechless. If before that there were some of them who smiled cynically when they saw Tengku Kudin feeding his food with his hand but after that each of them nodded maybe because they thought there was logic in the answer.

Your mother asked a valid point regarding how difficult it is for those with disabilities to get around KL. Most pavements have uneven surfaces and are rather small. It's challenging for those who use wheelchairs as well as prosthetic leg users. I speak from personal experience as a double amputee. In addition to being small, the pavement is crowded with motorcycles parked on it. which makes things harder for us to deal with.

Surprisingly (or not surprisingly) this happens a lot to me too, especially during breakfast. Either I get a free nasi lemak or someone already paid the bill for the next 10 person in queue. So we started to pay it forward, which means other people will get their breakfast paid. I guess that’s why this never ends when people started paying forward.

You'll notice that our spoons are thinner- so we use the side of the spoon to cut the meat. I'm ashamed to say most of our toilets are awful when it comes to cleanliness and dryness. And yes, you are expected to bring your own tissue. We don't have a walking culture here and yes, it's very wheelchair unfriendly. But like you said, Malaysians will stop and help when the situations requires it. I read somewhere from a traveller who said that Malaysia is the best country to visit if you're travelling with a baby as you will always get more help than you need with the baby, anywhere, anytime.
As a Malaysian, we are very warm hosts who are proud of our culture and especially our food. We will be disappointed when you don't like a certain thing, but we also appreciate your honest opinion. And then we will challenge ourselves to introduce you to something more to your style and that you will like.
Overall, it was great to see a middle aged (no offence meant- it's just to emphasise that at that age one can be quite set in their ways and can have certain expectations in Life) caucasian couple trying everything and giving honest opinions. As you have experienced, eating here is very serious but can be very casual with no airs- if you don't like it, you can spit it out. No one will take offence. Both of you are such good sports. I do hope you will take back with you many great memories of Malaysia.

I am a motorist, the reason we wear the jacket backward :-
    i. it is easier, take less time to wear it
ii. the back doesn't matter because the wind is in the front
iii. if it's raining, the front get wet when riding, the back less wet
iv. the passenger cover the back, they have to wear jacket to cover their back
    v. most jacket are long, by wearing it backward it can cover our legs when raining, it is not the same if wearing them properly

It's good to hear the comments from your mum and the way she observe the cultural differences. As a Malaysian, eating with our hand (right hand as the left hand is for something else 😇) actually taste better...but it's usually for plain rice with side dishes and not for fried rice which are mostly eaten using a spoon and sometimes with a fork as well. And I can understand the shock when she noticed that we can have rice for breakfast, lunch and dinner (and sometimes for supper as well) as rice is very much a staple food here.
Welcome to this part of the world, Diane and hope you'll have many fond memories of Malaysia. We're getting so used to seeing you on JetLag and will certainly miss you when you go back to Canada. 😊❤

Nice honest review, love it, chuckled about the cultural shock.
1.The reason some countries eating with hand have to do with Geography, that later become culture. We arent afraid to touch water, all year long, unlike northern area, its cold and definitely hard to touch water, this later seep into the culture.
2.The hose, same as above, it aint cold. Another hint:You wash your dishes with water, so the best way to wash your ...with...yeah, water. Dont do that in Canada, painful there.
3.The motorcycles/scooters and jackets etc etc....yeap, our bad hahahaha, other countries are worse!
4.The storefront pedestrian (kaki lima/five feet)...uhh yeah hahaha our bad.
5.Cattles in the street ? Ehh where did you guys went ?

Thanks for your honest comments & curiousity. Regarding abt the wheelchair, this is from my observations, to go to a store, general Malaysian would circle around in a car to find out what store they want to go there (i.e. (car) windows shopping). Why? Because car has AC. Walking outside too hot. Then, the next decision is if the store has wheelchair accessibility. Then, they park ( or double park) just to go to 1 store.
The point here is that, we're too lazy to walk from one store to another (if it's not a Mall). So the thought process of having the store pavement at same level is an afterthought, we generally focused to go to 1 particular store. Unless you want to get many different items from different stores, then Malls are the best place to be.

Diane, you're so cute and honest, We all had a good laugh 🤣🤣🤣 about it which at times is totally different as well from the Western style, IF we don't travel abroad! 🌏🌎🌍
Thats why, there's many funny incidences/stories to share like the un-levelled floor, the Big hole 🕳️, the scooter riders, using the hand ✋🏻 to eat, the weather etc etc. We Malaysians have succumbed to all these with ease coz it's our lifestyle and when we go abroad, it's the same culture shock as well! Nevertheless we learnt each others' culture and gradually adapting to it with time! 😁 Like the expats. 😂 6️⃣🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟👍🏻

Welcome to Malaysia. Im just sharing here, in muslim and most Malaysian perspective water is the best way to deal with that in the toilet and us muslim use right hand for eating and left hand for toilet stuff, when we lick our finger after eating will help with digestion etc.

I know what's you meant. We use the hose, then we use tissues to dry. (I brought my own tissues and soap (in tube) before entering the toilet because sometimes, tissues not provided in the certain places 😅)

Use the host like a bidet in the public toilets, on occasion you can buy a toilet roll/ paper at the entrance. Explore with an open mind and enjoy Malaysia & Asia.

Remember to wash your hands before and after you eat or whatever you do. Also usually we bring our own tissue or wet wipes.

I don’t eat with my hands other than what u hv mentioned but my friend does. There’s a technique to it which is interesting actually, especially for the rice dishes.

I'm Malaysian. I don't eat rice that much. I eat white rice once a day. Two or three times a week, usually for lunch or dinner. If I eat rice for breakfast, it's only the Nasi Lemak.

5:56 Imagining the hose, the water mustve been all around the floor even up the walls right? But nope. Everything else will still be dry. #technical #practicesmakeperfect 12:08 Probably the best imports exports if we can actually do that, our suns for your snows in exchange. No more energy issues. 14:17 everybody look after each other, youngsters always lend their hands to elderly people, handicaps or disabled, to anybody in needs.

Too funny...have to love your mum's polite observation. As Malaysians we're sometimes not aware of how quirky our habits are to outsiders. Decades ago when I was studying in the US, invited a friend for a meal and I gave her a spoon and she immediately asked for a fork. It was then that I realised Westerners use forks to eat.
