    • @unpaintedleadsyndrome
      @unpaintedleadsyndrome ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Fallout also has gamma radiation, and that is the big bad. Alpha radiation doesn't even penetrate clothing, you would need to ingest or breathe it in before it can do any damage.

    • @Evan_Bell
      @Evan_Bell ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Fallout is the source of the gamma radiation. He's not talking about the prompt gamma pulse.
      Alpha emitters are only really a hazard if ingested.
      If material "picks up" alpha particles, it just becomes infused with harmless helium, generally.

    For a Shelter 3 bags thick, you need about 5,000 bags for a 30ft. × 15ft. × 8ft high structure, including a flat roof. This is assuming full bags are about 1 foot by 1.5 feet and ⅓ foot thick, and also assuming the structure is fully above ground.
    It's better to dig-in at least half the height, and this supplies the dirt for the bags anyway. But if you're in a wet/ flood area, above ground might be the only option. Fully in-ground, if possible, is the best.

      @@michaellalanae7228 You can filter out radiative particulates that makeup fallout. It's just dust that has condensed out the cloud (from ground material that was vapourised, leaving behind a crater, and being lifted into the cloud as it rises), and is contaminated with radionuclides from the fission products produced by the bomb.
      They range from around 20 micrometers to 200 micrometers, average between 37.5 and 50 micrometers.
      A standard N95 dust mask has a 95% effectiveness of filtering out particles below 0.3% microns, far smaller than most fallout particles.

    Ok, but there is still alpha and beta particles that you have to worry about. And the E.M.P. And the fire storm. Best thing to do is go into a center room in your house ideally without any windows, put a table in there and stack books, sand bags or dense things on top to prevent gamma rays. Seal off vents, light switches, cracks on doors etc with plastic and ductape. Keep potassium iodide tablets and iodized salt if your poor. You would have to wait about 3 days. After that period most of the gamma rays and fallout would have dissipated by 90%. The emp can be prevented by having a fariday cage. You can make them for like 10$ and some junk.

Those who made it to their fancy bomb shelters will be long dead, either having killed themselves or having been murdered and eaten. I see a "no survivors" senario every time. For a nuke exchange I won’t have time to sandbag my windows and that’s be exhausting to do in a gas mask.
    I don’t live near anything I’d consider a target and if it is then the nuke exchange is so vast it would be almost impossible to survive outside for years. But wind will carry fallout around the world like it did at Chernobyl. NBC grade filters are expensive but even a vehicle filter will greatly reduce the contaminated dust that gets to you.

Sandbags are gonna do a really good job of insulting a shelter from outside radiation, however your still gonna need a ventilation system and good seals on everything, I think the point here is that you can sort of create the conditions of being underground when unable to dig, like still having a proper shelter just with the protection afforded from being underground by using a thick layer of sandbags which are just bags of dirt

    Sandbags are often given for free during heavy rain seasons. Here in Arizona (yes the desert) we get sand bags for free at multiple places. Bring your own shovel, maximum 10 per person per day. But the bags are often not super durable. They'll last the rainy season but will not withstand the summer sun. You can sometimes find construction sites with more durable sandbags. Ask the crew if you can help clean up and as payment maybe have a few of the sandbags. I have 10 thick bags and 5 thinner cheap ones keep empty and indoors. If I need emergency sand I got to a dry river bed locally known as a wash.
