    Thing about Jet Pac is that here we have a game with colour, sound, bags of playability and has that elusive "just one more go" factor and all this in a game that was written for the 16K Spectrum.
    Yes when compared to games of the modern ilk or even games for the 16 bit it does tend to pale but call it nostalgia on my part but I think there is a lovely innocence and enjoyment to this game that you simply don't get in many games.

    Here in the USA, there was only one way to play this game on a television, and that was through Donkey Kong 64 for the N64.
    The ZX Spectrum doesn't work here because we use 120V 60Hz NTSC Televisions.

    I have the Vic 20 version (req 8k/16k ram exapnsion) and the Speccy version .. both good, I remember this being an advanced game for the time I always keep that memory intact I always imagined the game to be like the loading screen before I played it properly so there was sort of an anticlimax but I was always in denial and let my imagination run wild with the high hopes I had for games development as far as I was concerned I didn't take hardware limitations into consideration I just assumed that computers with the option to add more RAM would be limitless.

    Sometimes when I see a simple but really well made game like this one, I wonder what would happen if you put it in an arcade cabinet with the same hardware, would this have gotten a lot of quarters back then? I think it could have.

    I played this as a very small kid. I vaguely think I remember my dad coding it from one of those code copy books where instead of a program or game, the book had copies of code that you had to manually reproduce. Not sure if that is correct for this game since I was very young, but I remember finding the whole idea of you programming your own game from a book magic since the only other games I knew were Atari and NES.

    Donkey Kong 64 was the best for having Jet Pac and Donkey Kong Arcade.
    Both games are iconic, of course Donkey Kong Arcade most people remember but this gem from RAREWARE back in their Ultimate days was one of the times in my gaming life I wanted to know about their early history.

    This was easily my favorite game on the ZX Spectrum 48K, man I must have played that thing for hundreds upon hundreds of hours. After a while we figured out on a certain level you could just stand in one certain spot and hold down fire and farm points indefinitely as the aliens flew into the laser beam. The aliens could never catch you in that one spot so if you wanted to max out the score counter you just stood in that spot and taped down the fire button on the joystick and let the game play itself for a day or however long it took. It was fun for a while after we discovered the "glitch", but it obviously defeats the purpose of the game, lol.

    Rare beat Nintendo to the punch with Wrap around scrolling, beating SMB2 by 5 years. For those less inclined, wrap around is where you go off screen and appear on either the left- or right-hand side of the screen. SMB2's first area before the door, shows this. Jetpac got this done years before. Jetpac also has no slowdown, objects fall at different speeds not affected by the gameplay, the objects are fluid AND it controls like a dream, on a 48k system! That's like squeezing all of skyrim onto a 32k cart with nothing left out. It'd take a true master of programming. Rare, you damned geniuses, YOU ARE GODS!
    for reference: Final Fantasy occupied 144kb and Dragon warrior occupied 49.7kb, just barely over the limit of the speccy and yet it packed in tons of enemies, weapons, great graphics for the time, an entire world, a boss fight and a beautiful score.
    AAA games today use tons of ram and can't get it right. Sometimes simplicity is best.

How the balloons imploded really was awesome. I believe it was the shift key - one of the left keys down.

      The game was emulated incorrectly in Donkey Kong 64; The ZX Spectrum only ran at 50 Hertz, but the game was forced to run in 60 Hertz, causing the game to run a bit too fast.

    AAl this programers expending millions and they dont reach the formula of the exit, that is after all simplicity and adicctivity, is like the song of la macarena...a formula of the exit. I dont like modern games because i found them, yes incredible graphics and sound, but lack of play addiction. They need to look at the past and maybe some day found the alchemic formula of making gold of a game (this 16 kbytes are gold because they sold a million copys). Think about it..

    SPECTRUM 16K Phenomenal programing and i must say today's programmer are spoilt for choice/resources(1080TI/6 CORE 12 THREADS,5GHZ FFS!! AND 32M MEG and still struggle for GAME PLAY I REST MY FUCKING CASE!:/ WANK PROGRAMMERS TODAY and a FUCKING SHAME THEY STILL EXIST!
    BRING BACK THE BEDROOM CODERS FFS!!:)
    The core problem of game design is the programmer is only after the MONEY and this has to be stopped, and the real bedroom games designer has to be reignited, the games have to be ADDICTIVE and programmed with passion and I believe this is not happening and it has created this low grade gaming/games.
    If anybody out there wishes to send me a GAME CONCEPT then I will truely play it and tell you honestly what I think of it :)

    Great game but wow, what a lame ending.

    • @ZEUSDAZ
      @ZEUSDAZ  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Games only looped back then, guess not enough memory for endings.

    • @nosferadu
      @nosferadu 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah endings were bad back then, but this is lazy even by those standards. At least display a "CONGLATURATION" message like most NES games did.
