- The frigid and snowy gales off the shore of Lake Superior are the last place you'd expect to find windsurfing... but three of the world’s best packed their bags to take on this unexplored frontier. After weeks of watching the weather forecast and waiting for the ideal storm, PWA stars Levi Siver, Philip Köster, and Brawzino went off the windsurfing grid to conquer some of the gnarliest waves the Great Lakes have to offer.

September and early October are great times to experience phenomenal sailing in the great lakes. I give these guys a lot of credit for making the effort to come to Michigan and test our waters. It would be a great honor to show them Sturgeon bay in lake Michigan on one of our epic fall SW days. The invitation stands.

Welcome to the conditions that most of the world's amateur windsurfers have to contend with. Most of us don't live in the tropics. Although personally I would not bother windsurfing in the winter. Anyways those guys where doing amazing moves despite the cold.

for the record, this wasn't filmed in the winter. This was in the fall. Middle bay is packed with ice in the winter.
I live in Minnesota where a good chunk of superior is and I will say this time a year to be surfing up there these guys from Hawaii were pretty strong. Even swimming in the lake in the summer the water is insanely cold.
dude without a wetsuit is hands down the best surfer.
And the real "dude without a wetsuit", who is the best surfer in the area and would be in the mix of best surfers in any area, wasn't shown in the video, because these guys rolled in here full of disrespect and pissed him off....so when they got screamed at, they made a joke out of showing this other fat guy nobody here knows talking about how he never surfs with a suit.
Well...in fact "dude without a wetsuit" surfs in a suit most of the year, because it's cold most of the year. These guys and their production handled this whole thing with no class and no decency, and left a lot of bad feelings behind.

@SmoothJohnson I am the fat guy without the suit. Through editing, I "surfed". Told them they should hit up the actual surfers as I am a swimmer. When wavy I hit up that area with my river board and swim out against for cardio. They took 10 minutes of footage and made a couple second clip. I remember the dude yelling from the truck and told them, that is who is surfing out here all the time, hit him up. FYI, that dude is awesome and there are tons of great photos of him covered in ice while surfing. Wish I could surf (bad back/knees), but I just swim.
Guess I should have moved around more so editing would have been more difficult to do.

Great point! I'll jump into an icy lake, but only after a spell in the sauna. I guess they were from California or Hawaii, so more familiar with hot tubs. But there certainly are many folks of Finnish extraction in the UP, and you can definitely find saunas up there, even a few companies that make them.

Video says 20 Miles north of Marquette. Like Jacob B says its Presque Isle Park in Marquette. The Lodge in video is on the west side of Presque Isle Facing Partridge Island and Middle Island. Growing up in the U.P. we never swam in Lake Superior, just too cold! The large smokestacks are on Lake Shore Blvd by the Ore Loading dock.

I surfed conditions like that up near Sydney back in 2004
the guys were bad ass. you can't even describe the winters in Michigan's U.P. one small example. in the spring, before ice out, all along the shores there are thousands of pieces of ice from the size of a sofa to hundreds larger than a house! right next to you on shore!!! it is unfathomable until you see it in person. the folks there are rugged, and extremely friendly. here's another perspective. they don't plow the snow forward much, too deep. the plows are attached to the trucks sideways, creating high walls. say if you went into a McDonald's for instance. you won't see the restaurant until your right in front of it. the parking lot will be like a corn maze, only it's snow, piled 14 feet high easily. lot's of "yooper" mailboxes on 15 foot poles!?! for the plant people, Michigan has more/different species of wildflowers than any other place in America, including Alaska and Hawaii.
O'Neill 5mm wetsuit full mittens can easily keep fingers warm for hours at over 6 degrees Celsius. Rip Curl 7 mm wetsuit full mittens can easily keep fingers warm for hours at 4 to 5 degrees Celsius, probably lower but i haven't tested that yet. Ok it is a bit harder to grip and you might not be able to do really big jumps and loops but fine for basic windsurfing, blasting etc

Wow. Boo hoo, no Hawaii, no Fiji. The rest of us mortals do that sort of sailing for several months every year and then we get changes next to our cars in a flooded car park.

Those waves are definitely NOT some of the narliest waves of Lake Superior. There wasn't even snow on the ground this December. I dare them to come when there is a "normal" winter in Marquette. The waves would be 10 times bigger then, too.

I think it's dumb that they were introduced to cold water surfing in the middle of winter in Lake Superior. Most people in their right mind would not surf there.
