Many Irish people immigrated to what is now the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. That's where I am from, and I do have one-quarter Irish ancestry. Anyway, among the numerous communities in this province with Irish roots are Kings Cove and Stock Cove, both on the province's east coast, two miles (3 km) from each other. Way back in 1883, the bishop was coming to consecrate the new Roman Catholic Church. He was coming by schooner to another community, then overland to Kings Cove. Many parishioners went out on the road (trail, really, at that time) to meet and welcome him. Among the "welcoming committee" was a band of local musicians who played the fiddle. One of the tunes they offered up was "The Rakes of Mallow."
Rakes of Mellow and also the Fairy Dance as both played here, being also favourites in the Scottish scene. Scottish & Irish have got lots of material in common.However...often under different titles.
The tune is also known as The Galway Piper, and the song Piping Tim of Galway. The Rakes of Mallow also has words, but until now I thought it was about Marlow, a town in Buckinghamshire.
