Hurricane Andrew was just a depression off the Carolinas coast 800 miles away, turned and slammed South Miami as a category 5. 700 miles gives any storm plenty of time to develop. If meteorologists did not report this information and a hurricane did hit your area - good luck.
The eye of a storm is only 1 segment, the wind span miles are just as dangerous.
