    When leds are in a line like this i like to flip each series so that you can group the ends and have it be alittle less wiring. ( -++--++- vs -+-+-+-+ )

    This is great, however I need to know how to make the acrylic inserts that go in the taillight housings. Since I'm working on something a little more unusual, I can't just hop over to a site and find premade inserts for my taillights. It's literally the only thing stopping me right now.

      Use tape to create a template, then cut it out from Perspex, or use CAD to make a model and laser cut it… evenly heat up the pieces with an oven or something, then lay them over the taillight lens to get the shape of the curves.

    I would really appreciate it if you took time to talk about retro fits or just trying to give that 2023 led look for older cars that have the old school halogen build. For example I drive a LS400 1998 and there’s no aftermarket support for the headlights since they changed them after 1997 1990-1996 got the aftermarket support and diff headlights. How do I go about giving my old halogen lights projector demon eyes 👁

    note the LEDs you're using are 5mm positive lead (longer one) is called the anode the negative lead (short one) is the cathode, the addressable LEDs that are more popular are using 5050 diodes same one used in LED strips, what I would do differently is use high power LEDs, I don't know what they're called I just look up 3W LEDs and they show up, I prefer using these because they're a lot brighter but you need a driver because they're 3watt diodes ( those diodes can also be found in light bars, and they have 3w RGBW LEDs)

    • @emmettturner9452
      @emmettturner9452 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The word he’s looking for is “lead.” Cathode is always the short lead (Negative) and Anode is always the long lead (Positive). This does not differ between brands as he implies. It is standard for axial leaded THT LEDs. Also, the round ones always have a flat side at the base to mark the Cathode in case the leads have been trimmed. If you can’t see that you can often peer into the LED to see which side has the larger flag shape known as the “Anvil” (Cathode). The smaller one is the “Post” (Anode).

    • @mknight6026
      @mknight6026 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Let me confuse you more although I'm not great at words or explaining things.
      In a cell the cathode electrode is the positive+ because it's gathering electrons while the anode the (negative) is losing by oxidizing electrons.
      In a circuit the cells +cathode is losing it's gathered electrons to the + in the circuit which in terms makes it referred to as anode +.
      Now that I've confused you here's an easy way I use to remember the terms for use in circuits.
      A+ (anode, positive)
      C- (cathode, negative)

  • @mknight6026
    @mknight6026 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What would i do different. Does look like 5 mm straw hat LEDs correct?
    Yeah so they actually make those in a strip that are already wiring with resistors that you can plug into those holes so there's no need for all that soldering bending and clipping of what you called "cathodes" which are actually referred to as electrodes.
    The positive electrode or the anode is the longer leg of the LED. I have never seen LEDs that were opposite of that so the longer leg is usually always the positive.
    So having an LED strip with pre soldered resistors in LEDs that just pop into place There is no need for any of that mess and in the end you would only need two wires coming up the strip making it look super clean and none of this burn marks or gray smoke on the lens or anything like that.
    Then there is LED laser wire which I have no experience with but I am wondering since it uses just a single LED that passes light through the wire itself with a consistent output of light throughout the entire wire I'm wondering if that could be used instead of bulky LEDs and bad wiring?

    I've got a 1996 Ford Thunderbird I've been wanting to do something unique. Possibly divide the rear deck lid lights and design a Thunderbird emblem in led to be a sequential Brake, turn, hazard, and reverse lights. And I want to do projection up front. Noone makes any aftermarket lights for these things so it has to be custom. And that is way outside of my comfort zone.

    • @tholepin
      @tholepin ปีที่แล้ว

      you can use a heat gun instead of putting it in the oven, but if a heat resistant sealant was used, it might be a little trickier to get it off. ultimately you shouldn't be reusing the sealant, so whatever works to get it off is fine since you can use a different sealant to close it back up.

    Just starting to focus on growing my small business in Australia of modifying headlights… I really am used to doing the VE commodore (I think Pontiac g8 in USA). Do you think i should specialise in one brand of headlight or do you think broadening to do more brands would be more beneficial? I’m not sure how confident I am with the headlights that are permaseal , I can do the VF but I have tried caprice (another type of holden) and couldn’t get them apart. Do you ever have headlights you can’t get apart? If so do you suggest cutting?

    • @tonyg-2jz82
      @tonyg-2jz82 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Never cut headlights, tail lights yes because most are plastic welded. I've had to unseal some perma-seal Jaguar headlights that were a big ol bitch. I ended up throwing them both in for about 20 minutes each at 250°. Also have a bunch of flatheads and other pry tools but most importantly shims. You don't want 2 spend forever on one section to finally get it to release only 2 move on 2 next area and have that area go back into its original placing, so shims are amazing to keep progress you've made. Don't be afraid to also have small parts of the plastic bent up because you can always repair with some heat.

      I’ll tell you from a decade of making how to videos, you’re not gonna make everyone happy anyway. I’m just grateful that Zac shared his time and experience building lights, and didn’t get hung up on shit that doesn’t matter.

      @@flyryde I agree, partly, in the fact that just knowing how to "do it" is what actually matters in practice, but it also shows that the knowledge of "why" it works, is actually lacking.
      I don't know. I guess from my perspective, if you're going to show a how-to on something as simple as LEDs, it would be preferable to portray a little education on the "why" to new people while still captivating the people who actually know the "why" instead of just internally infuriating me 😄.

    Has anyone understood the mathematics behind Ohms law and could readily read schematics and dabbled in electronics for years but some how fail to fundamentally understand how voltage, current, and resistance worked together in a circuit.

    Bro got me cringing not understanding LEDs. Anode and Cathode. Directional because of the lens, not the diode effect. Hard to take any of this serious after that. What a clown.
