  • Learn the rules for intonation in English when giving old and new information. In English the intonation changes the meaning of what we are saying, so it's very important to learn, not just to use, but also to understand other English speakers.

    I teach using just one of many accents in the world. Please only learn it if you like it and if you are interested in learning it. I do not believe there is one “correct” accent or manner of pronunciation and I fully encourage EFL/ESL learners to expose themselves to as many varieties of English around the world to become accustomed to the beautiful variations of this world language. I focus mostly on teaching “Modern RP” (I may just say “RP” in my older videos, but to clarify, I do specifically mean “Modern RP”), however, you will hear a lovely little Yorkshire twang to my accent from time to time too. Please LOVE and BE PROUD of your accent. After all, it is part of your identity and makes you unique. 💚

    Thanks Emma. I find it a bit complicated to apply in real life while I'm speaking. I've just bought the book so I can practise and make the intonation a habit and part of my natural speech. I've been struggling to lose my French accent for a number of years so hope it can help me.

    Emma just let you know, you’re saving my life now! 🥰 I’ve recently started a new job with only English people, and I’ve been crying every day because I cannot understand them (especially people from Birmingham area). Thank you for being such a great teacher! Hope I can meet you one day in London and invite you for a Colombian coffee. ☕️

    Thank you! OLD and NEW information is one of the most important elements of intonation - and also one of the most neglected! I have a special place in my heart for this system we use in English...and I'm so glad to see you sharing it with the English learning community. 💛

    A little note, I forgot to add a note in the video to say that "escalator" can be pronounced without that /j/. :) So you can say /ˈes.kjə.leɪ.tə/ or /ˈes.kə.leɪ.tə/. :)

    • @DawnPeacock
      @DawnPeacock 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Stress and intonation are often reserved for the university...where they are presented in a very dry way. They really need to be BROUGHT TO THE PEOPLE...They are so important for communication...and also FASCINATING.
      At the same time, it is not just YOU, and it's not just the dry academic presentation. One reason it's hard to grasp English stress and intonation is that it's rather complex...and it can be elusive. But I like to think of it as a TREASURE CHEST, full of treasure waiting to be discovered and enjoyed. You can continue to deepen your grasp of it for years...and it keeps giving you treasure.

    Amazing class. I tended to believe a rising intonation would actually signal an emphasis for something, to which we'd draw attention to the listener.
    This rising intonation would somehow function like a question tag, doesn't it? Like, "of course you know what I mean?"
