@@REEEPROGRAM A frankly remarkable group of systems. Look into the "conquests" of India sometime, that wasn't even the UK army or navy proper (at least in full force). Mercenaries, buying off the local leaders or whomever had disliked whoever had been in power at the time, paying the local soldiery more than their countrymen, a whole host of plans, good luck and lots of Money. Both being earned and being spent. Crazy centuries those.

I remember my section singing this as we bravely marched off to attack the Headquarters Battery of the 2nd Division, Dromaius Novaehollandiae, a unit dubbed the "Butcher Brigade" owing to their fierceness. We never knew if we'd come back, but orders were orders. I miss those boys.

On the land of this country

Here you are on the soil of a friendly homeland
    Sleep in peace and tranquillity
You are side by side with the Mehmetciks.
the mothers who sent their sons from far away land!
    Soothe your tears, your children
They are in our bosom, they are at peace

A swag is a tent or bedroll(named Matilda in this song), a swagman is a homeless man, billy is small metal can to boil stuff, billabong is a creek, jumbuck is a male sheep the squatter owned the land. Very old terminology used in an 118 year old song

Matilda is aussie slang for a collapseable sleeping tent type thing, typically used by people who move around a lot and/or have to sleep outside (modern day homeless, in older times itinerant workers)
Waltzing is just aussie slang for, ya know, travelling places on foot.
The song is, as someone before me stated, about either a homeless man or former sheersman (or both, tbh) during the Great Sheersman Strike in the 1890's (which nearly caused an australian civil war before the premiere sent in the army) who poached a sheep due to being very hungry and needing food, and once the sheeps owner (the "squatter", aussie slang for landowner) found him along with some of those aformentioned military, he chose to commite suicide by drowning in a Billabong (aussie slang for small lake) rather than bow to the violance about to be perpotrated against him
