Thank you for making this video! My now 3.5 yr old was born with congenital CMV and when I tried to find information online, most was geared toward the medical community. It was so scary at the time, especially for a first time mom.

@@MegaMadameM he has some hearing loss in one ear (just high frequency sounds), but we did early intervention right away to help monitor. So far it hasn’t gotten worse (it can be progressive), and he’s doing great otherwise.

This happened to one of my friends! They told her that her toddler probably brought it home, her baby was born with hearing loss in one ear but they were able to do a lot of early interventions and the loss didn't spread and she's doing great.

My baby is 11 days old & my baby failed his hearing in his left ear two days after he was born. His urine was tested last night and he tested positive for CMV. I am hopeful that since we’re catching it now that he will be okay with just a little hearing loss.

I plan to do IUI with donor sperm, I don't know if I have it. Should I risk using CMV positive sperm or stick to CMV negative donors? I'm not sure if I can get tested for it before concieving.

First of all, THANK YOU for educating about CMV. My son was born with congenital CMV 31 years ago. He is totally deaf, has a complex vision loss (classified as DeafBlind), cerebral palsy, autism, and the list goes on. My second son (both men are adopted) has Down syndrome. It boggled my mind that my library has hundreds of book on DS, but nothing on CMV, when the reality is that CMV causes more children to be disabled than DS does. IT boggles my mind even more that 31 years later, most people still have not heard of CMV. Pregnant women are warned not change the cat's litter box, dye their hair, eat fish, paint the nursery... but no one bothers to tell them not to kiss their child on the face, or share utensils. How many of us have kissed away our toddler's tears or wiped their dripping nose or finished their toddlers food? There are effective ways to reduce CMV infections, and they don't cost money, but still women are not being educated on something that could prevent a death or life long disabilities. It boggles my mind.

Exactly!! My son was a Congenital Cmv baby. From it he had severe cerebral palsy, microcephalic, and legally blind. It was so uncommon that I decided to have him at a medical university and allow us to be studied. This was in 1996. He never walked, talked, always wore a diaper, feeding tube, the list goes on..He passed away at 10 1/2 years old. Congenital cmv can cause severe disability.

Hi Dr. Martha! Thank you for this informative video.
I have a question for you to ask. I have two miscarriages this year. One is in January with 6 weeks and the latest is in October with 18wks. I was covid positive during my second pregnancy when I was 5 wks.
After these, a thorough checkup has been done to find out the reason(s).
Then I was diagnosed with CVM (IgG reactive) and Rubella (IgG reactive)
It would be great if you shed some light over this situation..

Thank you for this content, it was very helpful! I got tested even if I don't have any signs of CMV, but it's standard in my country before pregnancy. I got a CMV IgM negative and CMV IgG positive at 186 au/ml, and the limit is 6. This means I got the virus at some point? Do I have to redo the test to see if something changes? Since IgM is negative, does this results means that it can impact a future pregnancy?

Most likely not. Bcoz you have had CMV in the past, the chances of passing it to your baby are very less if not zero.
Talk to your Gynaec to ensure necessary precautions and i'm sure you will have a healthy robust baby 😊

Yesterday my doctor told me that they found this virus in my blood, so they are doing more tests. They told me that if what I have are antibodies for a past infection, that the solution is some medicin, but I can't find this information anywhere, is that true? Thanks!

Should I be worried when looking for donors? Like you said, 30-70% is a wide range. I'm CMV neg, but some donors are positive.

    • @Itisrealtalk

It can be a cause of concern for organ transplant patients but you must know that nowadays there are really good interventions to ensure there's no organ rejection due to CMV.
Eventually you will develop CMV if you receive an organ from a CMV +ve person but it won't affect you if you go by your doctor's advice.

This video isn’t particularly useful to me as I already know I have CMV (I’m 18 weeks pregnant). If past me could have known, I’d have washed my hands more around my toddler, but now current me wants to know what I need to worry about and what treatments are available, not about how worried I should have been when I didn’t even know this virus existed 😂

They only inform you about a potential infestation or suspicion of it when you're already in your third trimester of pregnancy. I don't understand the point of that. The obstetrician should include this test as part of the regular lab tests from the very beginning of the pregnancy. This is what preventive medicine is all about. 🤷‍♀️
