It's fascinating to see CBK through the eyes of someone that did not experience the 90s as I did. There isn't a current "celebrity" that can even come close to her elegance. CBK's style and fresh beauty is timeless. I was in my early 20s when her sister, CBK and John passed away. Some times I wonder how she would feel about the vulgar beauty standards that have become "norm."
You’re right. She is still relevant today. Recently, the French high-street brand Sézane did an inspiration look page recreating pap photos of John and Carolyn. It absolutely still works now.
Lovely profile of Carolyn. I am much older - will be 80 this year, and I remember her very well. The person who really started the white shirt for evening was Carolina Herrera. That was her signature look and still is. Carolyn was a lovely person, and her untimely death is still so sad, along with JFK, Jr. and Carolyn's sister. They were a fascinating couple on many levels.
I loved CBK style. Still timeless today! Boy the 90s were the best. I used to be told all the time I looked like her. What a compliment. They were a stunning couple! 😢❤
She was a New England physician's daughter, so had upper middle class money all her life: successful doctor/lawyer money. The Birkin bag became a style icon all its own about 5-6 years before being on "Sex & the City" in 2001 then "Gilmore Girls" in 2005. It may not have arrived for the masses prior to those shows, but the wealthy knew of them and were buying them for lots of $$. At the prices charged both then and now, there are no ordinary working women who wear them to the office to hold magazines. LL Bean has been around forever and is not a Dollar Store plastic beach bag. It is what folks with disposable income use for beach wear because even the super wealthy do not carry leather Louis Vuitton to the beach. Perhaps some other material, but not...
For those of us who were working class folks in the 80s, we carried the Kate Spade version of the Prada square bag. I still have it and my daughter wants it bad! Also, before online shopping, we had less time to shop and therefore fewer clothes that we wore and re-wore and re-wore. No "1 event" outfits like we have today.
I was young in 90's but I remember the decade. It was an amazing time. CBK was one of the style setters you would see in the many fashion magazines back then. (Remember those 2" thick magazines? With the great journalism and the award winning photography? Not to mention the new fragrance launch scent strips?) I remember Cindy Crawford and Linda Evangalista also embodied that cool girl, minimalist vibe. Your video made me feel kind of sad. Since CBK's era we have slid into a time where everything is expensive but the quality of clothing is just not the same. Some of the best retailers have gone insolvent since 2020 and things are topsy turvey now. Looking back at those photos of CBK I recall a time when things were fun. The world was more stable. And fashion was exciting.
Yes, there was something so optimistic about this era and the 90s. Her sense of fashion embodied that chic 90s minimalism but it had this undertone of optimism. Really appreciate your perspective and the perfume strip really got me. Big thank you for watching❤
My best friend at the time wore to my first wedding in 1977 a camel pencil skirt to just below the knee. She looked incredibly chic and I envied her look even more than my own wedding dress. She certainly looked more stylish than the other guests in their contrived wedding outfits and hats
She was actually from upper middle class. Her step father was a surgeon, so most likely earning close to $400,000 back in the 80s. Very privileged. She wore the Birkin for function like Jane Birkin did. Loved her style and a pioneer of street style.
@Purplenpinkk annual average wage back then in NYC was 49K... so 80 was already way above and that for a beginner... My father also was wealthy, but after I got a job he didn't pay me anything anymore besides my car insurance back home (was in his name, he didn't ask me to) That was it! Did you get money still from yr parents when graduated? If so, congrats - I don't know anybody who did.
@@sandraankenbrand I’m not talking about your salary. I’m talking about her step father. My father was a surgeon in the 80s in NY and was earning money like that. This is how I know.
She was one of my favorite style icons! She and I were almost the same age. I still follow the same classic style with just a bit of an edge. Her death was a tragic loss. I do need to correct you on her upbringing. She wasn’t middle class, her parents were affluent.
Great video but I couldn't help but giggle a it about how different our perspectives are between the generations. It was normal to re-wear clothing and accessories until they came to the end of their natural life in the 90s. Fast fashion and the impulse to buy a fresh wardrobe every season came later. I'm looking forward to a time when that comes back - everyone valuing their clothes and their style more when it meets longevity again, although this time, in the name of sustainability of course.
Great comment! I agree…I also look forward to a time when personal style is prioritized over fast fashion. Hopefully, people will stop “investing” in all of the items that influencers push and will spend more energy developing one’s own personal style.
In the day LLBEAN WAS MY GO TO…. From Welles to Italian made snow boots to woolen socks down jackets and more…. I miss them they are all but gone today….was always happy to get their catalogs. I’m older than CBK but her style was always me…. It comes from within 💯
I'd love you to talk about Carolina Herrera's unique style. I believe that she was the first to introduce her signature white shirt with a black skirt for formal wear in her 1981 collection.
Mary, I loved this video!!! What a fascinating idea, and I admired so much how you provided your own insightful opinions ( I agreed on all your remarks!) with so much informative and inspiring comments. I just adore Carolyn Besette Kennedys style… so classic but with sensuous appeal. Truly iconic. I’m so happy you’re doing these videos, I cannot wait for your next one, this was so beautiful and reminded me of when I was a twenty year old, and gazing through magazines just to see what Carolyn was wearing that week! 🤩Bravo, Mary!!! 🥰💓
I agree, classic with sensuous appeal is right! It must have been so amazing to see her style photographed in magazines - such an icon! Thank you for watching❤️
I LOVED your take & commentary on her! I’ve known of her style being inspirational to people for years but learned so much from this. Please do more!!!
Yes, you’re right. Classic, feminine and stylish. LL Bean is fantastic. Their jeans are incredible and the lining is plaid on the ones I have. They keep you warm too.
I always admired her style. She understood her body and what looked good on her. She was the quintessential New Yorker. So beautiful. Thanks for making this video. It was great revisiting her style and beauty.
I never knew about her! But her style speaks to me and I'll take a deeper look because "less is more" is my mantra. I can't imagine a birkin fitting into luxury minimalism today, I think a garden party is wayyy better, but you're right at that the time the birkin wasn't really the BIRKIN of today. Also LL bean is known for their quality and lifetime guarantee. If anything goes wrong with any item you get from there, they replace it even if its been 20 years. They only recently stopped this guarantee. I know people who used to look for LLBean at thrift stores, take it in to the store and get a brand new item. LL Bean definitely says "practical" but also quality, and I feel like it has a northeastern Trust Fund kid vibe.
The birkin-- and most luxury brands-- was not known outside of wealthy circles until reality TV; most notably the Housewives franchise. CBK was definitely a trailblazer, in more ways than one.
I love Carolyn’s timeless style. The white shirt and the silk ruffle skirt is so stunning. I’m excited to see your next one. What about covering Amal Clooney? 😘
I'm a few years younger than Carolyn would have been. At the time, images of her were only available when they popped up in a magazine. And yet, I clipped them out and tried to emulate. I remember that a lot of us who couldn't afford her actual clothing bought the knock-off styles at Banana Republic. I still feel sad when I see her but I also love to, so thanks for this video. Would LOVE to see a breakdown of Christine LeGarde's style. Those scarves!
I'm around her age she was in the late 90s and I always screenshot every new image I see of hers. I know, not quite the same, and I think when I last clipped magazines it was of the Olsen twins, but so fascinating she still has that hold decades later. Thank you so much for sharing and watching❤
I agree with all the positive comments on Carolyn and admire insight of the presenter, both are terrific at what they are doing. I also wonder ,working with fashion for so long , if Carolyn just was so well practiced that she was able to really pair her look knowing what works for her. It reminds me how fashion designers come out at the end of their show wearing most simple, monochromatic look, some of them always the same. as if to say you are more important than your clothes. When we watch Carolyn we always see her first, and then what she is wearing. I think that is the secret of style: to RESIST everything that doesn't work for you , for your body type, comfort, lifestyle, .....not to worry others will comment: "you always look the same"
Ohh yes that is such an interesting point. I'm always interested in a designers personal style. What does someone like Phoebe Philo wear on the regular. I do think people that work in fashion, dress so naturally. Thank you for watching❤
Beatrice Borromeo reminds me very much of Carolyn Bissette-Kennedy, in more ways than one. Not only do they resemble each other physically, but their personal style is quite similar, even though they were decades apart. It is the "less is more" approach to their style choices, which is a classic and timeless elegance. Also, it is making the right choices for them. That was something Audry Hepburn lived and breathed as well. Actually, all three of these beautiful women exuded self-confidence and independence, and they were all successful career women in their own right (with Beatrice still being very much alive, and well, of course). These women discovered beauty well beyond the pages of a magazine cover, or Madison Avenue. They found true beauty from within and from the elements that surrounded them in nature, in the arts, and by participating in life's most valuable treasure, which is found in relationships. All three of these rare beauties have one more thing in common that brought out the most exquisite expression in each one of them, and that was when they would interact with a child. I have never seen a more genuine purity in their smiles, than when they were holding a baby in their arms.
So eloquently put, especially the "beauty from within" statement. I will have to take a look at Beatrice Borromeo's style. Thank you so much for watching and the suggestion❤️
She was an still is insanely Uber chic. Especially in the gauche logo world we live in. She had style and she didn’t care a fig about what everyone else was doing. It was her. That’s why she is so iconic
Love your channel and thoughts! Carolyn has such a class and dignity. Her wardrobe serves her and she never serves any luxurious items of her wardrobe.
So glad I stumbled on your channel. Carolyn’s style has fascinated me since the first time I laid eyes on her. I’m an Audrey Hepburn/ Kate Moss style lover ( I realize that’s quite a swing of style 😂 ) but CBK is my favorite!!
I just loved Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. I still have that copy of Vanity Fair with her on the cover and a full feature with black and white photos of her at home with her dog. She was wearing jeans and a classic button-up shirt. Always imagining what could've been...
I was living in the 90s in NYC and so much loved her style that I kept it until today... Lovely to see its a thing (also I was quite happy to not see it allover)
Love Carolyn Bessette’s style! It very much reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s aesthetic in “A Perfect Murder”, which came out in the late nineties. I think of Katherine Hepburn as quite the trailblazer in her day, in terms of daring and distinctive style choices…. Someone like Héloïse Letissier, singer of Christine and the Queens, is a modern day trailblazer, at least in my book.
Love 💓 this video❣️ So well done, you are right Carolyn did have a clean, effortless, and sexy style. It's so interesting because all the outfits she was wearing could be worn today.
You are incredibly insightful. Thank you for such a comprehensive summary. My guess is that the L.L. Bean tote (the brand is very much of the preppy New England kind of fusty genre) was simply because she was at the beach and sailing, so it would withstand the water and salt air. The minimalist luxury philosophy requires that beautiful quality items are cared for, so she would never have taken a leather bag out on the water. Again, I enjoyed your video so much.
I had to laugh because I just bought an $85 LL Bean jacket at an NYC flea market over the weekend; Im so nostalgic for my '90s teen years. And you didn't know what the brand was lol! Really enjoyed this CBK essay just the same
@@MarysRoom oh lol you’re in Canada; stumbled on your channel and have to watch more - just loved your framing her style through a values and philosophy lens, and her bags (never thought about it but so key) 💕
This commentary was so fun to watch, thank you for highlighting Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy! Also really loved how you drew comparisons/contrasts to Philo and Khaite and Celine. Curious about your thoughts on Bottega and Anine Bing and The Row as well for the same luxury minimalist/clean looks.
Ohh I recently made a video on Bottega's latest bag and I have several videos on the Row. I haven't touched on Anine Bing yet. Def a brand I want to look into. Thank you for watching!
Your depth of knowledge and analysis are 💯. Your expertise goes beyond just clothing and accessories. You thoughtfully analyze how the person's lifestyle, figure, individual beauty, personality and essence influence their style. Love this vid and your Zoe Kravitz one. Just discovered your channel today...let the binge continue! Keep going, sis! 💪💪💪
It's astonishing how someone who was on the world stage for a relatively short time (sadly) has had such a long-lasting impact in terms of style legacy
Wow, I loved this and I love her. Also down to three bags LOL. A note about L.L.Bean, I noticed that Andre' Leon Talley owned several in the Chrisite's auction of his belongings -- they were all monogrammed with ALT, which was a popular detail in the 90's - which she also skipped!
I was 13 when she passed away. Obviously my style at the time was waaaay different. But looking back as an adult of the same age, I love her aesthetic! She was minimalism & capsule wardrobe chic before it became a thing. I have some of what she does styles in my wardrobe, but I can appreciate her so much. She & Jackie weren’t brand whores, they shopped with intent & created trends. I miss that. Nowadays, people are walking billboards.
Hi, her birkin was a 40. I only know because I researched it and bought the exact same size and leather when I saw her wearing it. And I loved that there were pictures of her with that birkin sitting on the ground in the subway station!!! When I purchased my birkin back in 2000 it was a time where you put your name in and in a few years your name was called! No quota bags to purchase! Love your content!!
Wow this was such a great analysis. I love CBK, she’s my contemporary. It was such a refreshing video. I have subscribed. Your video was informative and well edited. Thanks ❤
Just pinning this comment to make the correction that CBK had an upper-middle-class upbringing
A very tiny mistake: the white shirt was from Yohji Yamamoto, not the skirt. If you look closely, the shirt was buttonless. It was designed to be worn as Carolyn did, and that was why it fit so perfectly.
Yes, @MarysRoom, her mother remarried a physician and they lived in Greenwich, CT, which is very affluent.

She was an still is insanely Uber chic. Especially in the gauche logo world we live in. She had style and she didn’t care a fig about what everyone else was doing. It was her. That’s why she is so iconic
Yes it was all about her personal style! Thank you for watching C N❤️
I agree! Her style is eternal!
I just loved Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy. I still have that copy of Vanity Fair with her on the cover and a full feature with black and white photos of her at home with her dog. She was wearing jeans and a classic button-up shirt. Always imagining what could've been...
Those items are collectables at this point🙌 Her style was an inspiration❤
I loved her style, I picked my wedding gown to be similar to hers.... Non puffy elegant.
Such a stunning dress, so elegant and timeless. Thank you for watching
Thank u for sharing this video Mary. Wasnt really familiar with her style and the bags she wore. She is very elegant and chic 🥰🥰🥰
Thank you so much❤️
Fabulous look at CBK personal style. Another component of her style was the super-luxe hair, taken care of by celebrity colorist Brad Johns.
Great point! Her hair always on point!
I was living in the 90s in NYC and so much loved her style that I kept it until today...
Lovely to see its a thing (also I was quite happy to not see it allover)
Yes please, do more of this kind of videos. Amy Smilovic is another style icon for me 🥰
Great recommendation! Thank you for watching❤️
This was great. Thanks. I would like to see a video about diane kruger's style. I think it is classic and progressive as well
Ohh yes such a great suggestion!
Love it as always!! Another bag she was often seen wearing was the extremely underrated Hermes Massai bag. A beautiful functional hobo!!
That is such a good one and the Hermes Massai is so chic❤
Love Carolyn Bessette’s style! It very much reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow’s aesthetic in “A Perfect Murder”, which came out in the late nineties. I think of Katherine Hepburn as quite the trailblazer in her day, in terms of daring and distinctive style choices…. Someone like Héloïse Letissier, singer of Christine and the Queens, is a modern day trailblazer, at least in my book.
Love your insight in this video. As a teenager in London the 90s LL Bean was definitely a brand on my radar, most likely thanks to CB. ❤
Love the series definitely worth the time 💋❣️
Thank you so much❤️
I loved Caroline Kennedy style.
I know! It is So good❤️❤️ ❤️
Omg. I loved CBK style and the way she always looked so effortlessly put together. I wonder who inherited her handbags.
Those bags could honestly be in a museum! Thank you for watching🙏
Loved this series! Please do more. So good to be inspired by these people ahead of us. 💜💜
I know! I'm finding I'm less interested in what trends are coming for next season and more into personal style. Thank you for watching Kenny❤️
Fantastic video…..see things at a brilliant deeper level…you’re one to watch 🧐🤩🙏
Thank you so much! Really appreciate you watching🙏
The style videos are your strength, IMHO. You are so well-versed and informative, but not in a vapid way. I love it!
Thank you so much TJ❤
I recently refurbished my late 80s Coach bag. I'm so excited about it.
Ohh very cool!
Kennedy women, always timeless
Agreed!❤
I absolutely loved her style. IMO it was very Jackie Kennedy, streamlined but updated. Stealth wealth.
Thanks for a great insight into CBK's unique style (spoilt only by the pic of the copycat Merkle nightmare of a woman).
Jackie O was the epitomy of high fashion and that Gucci bag..ohhh Jackie. No other first lady had class and style like her!
Love 💓 this video❣️ So well done, you are right Carolyn did have a clean, effortless, and sexy style. It's so interesting because all the outfits she was wearing could be worn today.
Exactly, truly timeless but modern at the same time. Thank you for watching!
Loved her style ❤
I know! Such an icon! Thank you for watching❤️
loved her style!!
Agreed! So iconic!
This is a wonderful analysis. I would love to see more. Thank you!
Thank you so much Texas Gal❤️
Loved her style.
So so good❤️
The LL Bean canvas boat tote is quintessentially east coast and totally suited her style. Can you do Lauren Bacall or Katherine Hepburn?
Great point and suggestions! Thank you for watching❤️
Totally get that vibe from the bag - so effortless but practical. Thank you for watching!
I had to laugh because I just bought an $85 LL Bean jacket at an NYC flea market over the weekend; Im so nostalgic for my '90s teen years. And you didn't know what the brand was lol! Really enjoyed this CBK essay just the same
LOL yes not a thing in Canada. Thank you for watching❤️
@@MarysRoom oh lol you’re in Canada; stumbled on your channel and have to watch more - just loved your framing her style through a values and philosophy lens, and her bags (never thought about it but so key) 💕
Yes, definitely appreciating this video more please
More to come! Thank you for watching❤️
CBK style is still very stylish and relevant today cause it's timeless.
Great series!
Thank you Angela💕
This commentary was so fun to watch, thank you for highlighting Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy! Also really loved how you drew comparisons/contrasts to Philo and Khaite and Celine. Curious about your thoughts on Bottega and Anine Bing and The Row as well for the same luxury minimalist/clean looks.
Ohh I recently made a video on Bottega's latest bag and I have several videos on the Row. I haven't touched on Anine Bing yet. Def a brand I want to look into. Thank you for watching!
I loved her style! Very vlassic
Such an inspiration❤️
First time I see a video from your channel, and it amazing, love your comments and you sharing all your knowledge! Congrats!
She still inspired me.
Same, so many great lessons in style. Thank you for watching❤
Such a good point Kate❤
You did a great job with this video on CBK. Well researched and good content. Thanks!
Thank you so much🙏
Wow, I loved this and I love her. Also down to three bags LOL. A note about L.L.Bean, I noticed that Andre' Leon Talley owned several in the Chrisite's auction of his belongings -- they were all monogrammed with ALT, which was a popular detail in the 90's - which she also skipped!
Yes, what a special piece to have monogrammed! So fascinating about the Christies auction. Thank you so much for watching❤
Excellent!
Thank you so much for watching❤️
Loved this
Thank you so much for watching❤️
Love the video ! Would definitely like to see more.
Thank you so much Patricia!
Loved this video! Glad the TH-cam algorithm brought me here. Would love to see one on Emmanuelle Alt for sure!
Awesome Jasmine! OMG She is so at the top of my list. Thank you for watching❤️
Superb analysis and I'm looking forward to seeing your piece on Christine Lagarde
Thank you so much Fiona❤
I was 13 when she passed away. Obviously my style at the time was waaaay different. But looking back as an adult of the same age, I love her aesthetic! She was minimalism & capsule wardrobe chic before it became a thing. I have some of what she does styles in my wardrobe, but I can appreciate her so much. She & Jackie weren’t brand whores, they shopped with intent & created trends. I miss that. Nowadays, people are walking billboards.
Yes she was such a pioneer of this style and so refreshing in comparison to how fashion is now. Thank you so much for watching❤
Ohh I know, the effortlessness of her style. Wow, what a treasure a 2000 Birkin is!
An absolute style icon imo
Agreed! Thank you for watching❤️
Loved this video!
Thank you so much❤️
Great videos. I’m on a binge today after just discovering you. Also I’ve that same RL hat 🧢
Awesome! Thank you! It's definitely my most worn hat. Thank you for watching Sam!
Wow this was such a great analysis. I love CBK, she’s my contemporary. It was such a refreshing video. I have subscribed. Your video was informative and well edited. Thanks ❤
Big Thank You❤ Much appreciated
