"it feels like The Game Awards is embarrassed by video games" Couldn't have said it better myself. We don't need big Hollywood stars to be involved in games to make them cool or feel recognized, that has been happening naturally over the years as the medium matures.
Matthew McConaughey's participation seemed the MOST forced. If he hadn't TOLD us he was a character in Exodus, we would have had no idea why he was on stage presenting that trailer. His character wasn't even in the trailer.
I feel like if the Hollywood stars on the show love video games and want to be apart of the game awards that’s cool. I want the industry to grow and if that makes it grow then cool but if people don’t care about gaming are just being put on to make it seem cool that’s definitely weird.
@@joshninnyThis. If they love games and love being a part of a game, then I welcome them with open arms. But if hollywood celebs are just in games because it is just another job to cash in or to gain PR when they couldn't care less about gaming, I say F them. Same is happening to F1. A lot of hollywood celebs get invited to the races as VIPs, but most of them don't even know any of the drivers and are rude to interviewers trying to get their thoughts on F1. They're only there for PR.
We won VR Game of the Year at the Game Awards last year (Moss Book 2). It felt great to win it, but I did feel kinda disappointed that no one on our team was given the opportunity to say anything
Yeah 100%. To me the ads were not even the worst deal. These celebs with their egocentric vibes, this is what I hate the most in the game award. @@ohithur i'm ok with the ads and "world premieres", ads pay the bills and reveals are fun and to me part of something like this the starfucking is out of control though, like if they just got rid of the long ass celeb speeches every award could have had time for a decent speech
I truly hope Geoff takes the criticism levied towards the game awards in a good way and not a bad way, I love the game awards, it’s so cool and awesome to see my favorite games get recognized, but man did this years game awards truly expose the worst of this event, hope it changes for the better
Geoff has already apologized on twitter, apparently there was some miscommunication - the Orchestra was not supposed to complement award winners so early from stage. Most of them literally had about 1 Minute, often with 2 people. That's 30 seconds each, which is extraordinarily short. So they won't make the same mistake next year. I'd also say 2 minutes should be minimum - the Baldur's Gate 3 and Cyberpunk guys have literally worked on their games for what - 6 years? Let them celebrate.
@@DerDudelino To be fair he didn't really apologize. He more so just acknowledged the critisim. If anything, and this could be just my interpretation he seemed kind of defensive.
@DerDudelino felt more like he was defending himself and placing blame on the production more than apologizing. I dont think he even said sorry or apology at all. He didn't even say it wouldn't happen again, he gave a very distant "something to look into" basically. Not saying he doesn't care or feel anything about it, but his response definitely did not feel humble or accountable which does not bode well.
When Kojima gets a longer interview length than actual Game awards get for their acceptance speeches then you know something is very off. I'll always give props to Geoff Keighley for his achievements in making the VGA's and balancing the production side of it, but this years VGA's felt really "corporate", for lack of a better term. Hope he does better next year. Also, congrats to Larian studios for their abundance of awards, they truly deserved it!
not just Kojima. It's every guest who are paid to promote their game, they got up stage making awful and awkward speeches. Even Matt Mercer kind of fell off, he could do way better than that speech..
@@zedetach nah, just less ads, less celebrity and their skits, do you know how long the acceptance speech from this year was in total? 11 minutes... in an show that almost 4 hours. He can do better than that. Like I don't expect him to have like full 1 hour of acceptance speech, but 20-30 mins is that hard? Kojima and Jordan Peele has almost 10 mins just to debut a nothing teaser that don't know when the game will actually be released, Anthony Mackie and Simu Liu is great guys, but Geoff could have slash their time in half and we could have a few more speech. And then the muppet skit every year...
As the night went on, I was actually gaining hope that Alan Wake might upset Baldur's Gate, but BG3 just had too much momentum. Still glad they gave AW2 so much recognition.
Whats bizarre is the video games industry is bigger then the movie industry, yet we rely on them for validation. If you're going to use a movie star to present game of the year, then it needs to be someone like Cavil
It's because society at large still doesn't take video games as seriously as movies in regards to a storytelling medium. And to be frank, as a gamer myself, I get it. Gamers are an incredibly immature group, and people see that. It's literally our fault it is that way.
Ye, he was late but he caught up with the whole plot and series afterwards, which is fair, always good to gain new fans no matter the time they arrive.@@skdeathxlife
I heard you mention someone coaxed off stage when talking about someone who died, but I was even more surprised when I realized it was literally for BG3, the game that won the biggest award. That’s shocking. 1 minute limit for game of the year is crazy.
Yeah honestly this should be literally the one thing that doesn't have a time limit. It's the last thing anyway. The Zelda fans already changed the channel. Just let them talk
man, I know it might be an uncomfortable topic for those who haven't directly experienced loved ones dying, BUT for fucks sake, let them grieve and pay respects to their friend and colleague.
They could at the very least have shown a 5 second gameplay clip for each nominated game. Then a visual reaction of the winning team in the audience (if present) for another 5 seconds. This is like reading out test scores in a high school off a form pinned to a cork board.
Honestly, some actors are a great fit... if they belong at the show. We have talented folks like Troy Baker, Jennifer Hale, David Hayter, Ashley Johnson, and I could go on. You know, actors who're actually relevant to video games.

They definitely should try a "Day of TGA" thing where they can juice creators with trailers and reveals like every 30 minutes before the show they need to fit it all in, big 3-4 drops saved for the show, and time for everyone winning that wants it.
Mostly cuz hers was prerecorded and if they cut hers in the middle it would be even more apparent that they’re trying to speed things up. Not that she should didnt deserve her time or that it was virtue signaling, but they might’ve thought they could “get away with it” for other ppl and not her. Something blatantly untrue.
Completely agree. I felt so bad for Larian. BG3 is such a monumental achievement and their speech was so rushed I felt like it was being just treated as an inconvenience. Meanwhile Kojima gets a whole set piece and extended interview for brief and honestly rather pointless tech demo.
@@Alex_Logan22 All that could be in an interview you read off an article post. Not in a 3 and half hour long show where people already dont have any time to be grateful for their achievements. The fucker didn't even show gameplay.
This was absolutely spot on, in particular you said ‘disrespectful’ and ‘soulless’ - that was exactly my feeling about the show and just made me sad for people who didn’t get to properly celebrate what should have been a very special moment for them. Like most people, I tuned in for the trailers and reveals, which the show did very well, but in many ways that good work was undone by the bad taste the rest of it left in the mouth.
I think something that would've gone a long way to fix this year's Game Awards would've been if any of the on-stage marketing stuff had actually been tied in to any of the awards that were being given out. Like: you're doing an extended sketch with Gonzo, that feels like a natural place to segue into Gonzo presenting the Best Family Game award (which was inexplicably given out in the pre-show). Or Simu Liu being on stage talking about his love of RTSes and how happy he is to be voicing a character in Frost Giant's upcoming RTS maybe should've led into Simu Liu presenting the Best Strategy Game award. Sean Murray announcing Hello Games's next game after No Man's Sky -> Sean Murray presenting the 'Best Ongoing Game' award (setting aside that 'Best Ongoing Game' is kind of a nonsense category), Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele announce a horror game -> Hideo Kojima and Jordan Peele present Best Horror Game, etc. The marketing can be made to feel organic and germane to the awards. The way that there was no connection between just about anything going on on stage and the awards that were being given out is, in my opinion, a HUGE part of why the game awards felt like such an afterthought at The Game Awards. Also: Geoff rattling off 3 or 4 Best [Insert Category Here] Game in a row like he's announcing election results just straight up shouldn't have happened. Also also: they really should make an effort to fly some representatives of all the Best [Insert Category Here] Game out to LA for the awards. I know that travel and lodging can be expensive, but I don't think any devs will be complaining if they're not being put up in an all expenses paid suite at The Ace or The Standard or something.
Those are some great suggestions but the downside is it will make the show even longer. Unlike other award shows TGA tries to fit in so many things. Announcements, promotions, musical performances, while trying to present what is supposed to be the main part the actual awards, but ends up feeling shoehorned in because the show is running too long.
As another dev, +1. This years' awards were brutal. The tweet about crunch now applying to awards was... oof, too true. Accessibility being in the pre-show was oof.
@@iRadinVerse pointing this out, he didn't say that. he said " As another dev, +1". as in "i agree". at least properly read something before telling someone else they misread it.
No, re-read the grammar. "As another dev, +1" As another dev, meaning they consider themselves a game developer. +1, a common shorthand way of expressing an "upvote" or agreement.

Fares and Judge were some of the most talked about and memorable moments of previous tga. Why? because the passion of developers finally gets to be seen by people and for once the anonymous corporate overlord persona is temporary removed.
Sam looked so happy, I teared up! Herald of darkness was my favourite moment of the game awards, ever. The acceptance speeches were absurdly short but as someone who doesn't work in that industry I do find it a bit harder to appreciate variations of the same speech being said again & again. Though you could apply that to any award show.
Thank you, when people shit on this show I think they pay too much attention to the wrong things. Herald of darkness, hellblade, and the symphony performances all felt perfect to me.
They should just make it so the director of the previous GOTY winner present next year's award. They did this in the past. It makes more sense than random celebrities doing it.
When you said they are a celebrities but not a celebrities in our industry you totally hit the nail on the head! Its like they need validation from the movie industry who are seen as "real famous people" like why did they have all these actors who have no idea about games and are simply there just to boost views, at least get an actor who has worked on games or famous people in our industry to present the awards like Troy Baker for example. Some people said its like they're embarassed that this is an award show and I totally agree, its like they rush through all the game stuff like "yeah those arent important, but look at all the cool trailers and actors we have here" which that is an insane insult to all game devs who actually make the games we play and without them Jeff wouldnt even have his award show.
I really agree about this one, I’d also like to see the teams ( devs, managers, owners - esp Indies ) get a little more stage time and a chance to have that memory.
I sometimes think I'm a videogame fan, but Alanah has her heart and soul invested into not only the games, but the people who make them as well, no matter how unknown or in what position. Wow, genuinely an inspiring person
This year the battle over monetization and the "soul" of the games industry has seemed intensely present in the conversation. And the Game Awards feels like a perfectly representative microcosm of that.
Has it? I can't really think of anything like what you're saying. I thought this year was full of soul with so many good games from different genres, it was a brilliant year for gaming and you can tell just by looking at the nominees for GOTY this year as compared to earlier years.
I can't imagine a version of the game awards that actually delivers on Keighley's promise of a "celebration of the industry" as long as he's beholden to advertisers and publishers. He just needs to drop the act and present it as a hype show/E3 equivalent. Or, and this seems a lot less likely, get enough people in power behind it to start something like the academy that funds the show
This years award defiantly seemed soulless and was very sad when Neil had 2 seconds to do his acceptance speech and hes such a sweetheart with a heart of gold
Well said. Thanks to all the developers who worked so hard on their creations. I hope they get more recognition in the future. And yes, they're way cooler than actors!
I saw a comment to one of the tweets calling TGAs "the more successful younger brother who still seeks validation from his older brother" and it couldn't be more true. Tons of celebrities are gamers too, sure, but there has to be happy medium with the time EVERYONE on stage gets, not just a celebrity so you can hope a news site mentions your show with a picture of that person
I don't care about awards shows but this year I REALLY wanted to see Larian and Remedy get their due and I'm happy to see they did. Sam Lake was so happy on stage AND I've begged Sam and Geoff for years to get us a Poets of the Fall/Old Gods of Asgard live performance and they delivered (even if it was shorter than many of the previous year's music). TGA this year definitely did feel disrespectful to the developers; it felt like 15 seconds into accepting an award the music starts playing and the "wrap it up sign" starts looking at them is annoying af.
I really liked when Neil Newbon was presented the award for Best Performance by Christopher Judge. Not only is it the previous winner but it's someone who understands the craft and achievement and is very fitting to give that award. It would make a lot more sense if the awards could be presented and handed to the winner from the previous winner or representative of them. I'm not sure how often there are consecutive winners but if a previous winner is nominated again or just not available, then have a representative of the other previous nominees instead because they understand the craft and achievement. Can you imagine if the next TGA, Swen Vincke is presenting the award to the new GOTY. That would feel so respectful and meaningful. And rushing the speeches was so poor. I understand Christopher Judge's speech went on too long last year for some people but it was heartfelt and genuine and they really overcompensated for that this year, ruining the moment for devs to actually accept the award and say what it meant.
actually in GOTY category, it's been the previous winner that became presenter. Neil Druckmann (TLOU2) -> Josef Fares (It Takes Two) -> Hidetaka Miyazaki (Elden Ring) This year, maybe it is bcs of language barrier that it is not Miyazaki that was presenting GOTY category. But they can still choose Eric Williams or Cory Balrog from GoW Ragnarok to present the award though instead of Timothy
And Larian was showing why they are there in the first place. Their CEO walked up in plate armor and then said basically 3 words: Thanks Thanks Remember No hour long speech could have conveyed that message better. About the Best Indie. All the indie developers know that Larian Studios is an Independent studio just like them. They see one of them punching up and know that it can be them one day standing there.
@@OrbObserver The term is "supposed" to mean independent.. NOT small (that's a stupid notion gamers assigned to it). Independent SHOULD mean free of external publisher, that the DEVELOPER publishes their own game (which Larian does). The size of the studio is irrelevant. Larian owns themselves, their games are not put out at the whims of an outside agency, Larian decides when / if / how their game goes out - hence, are independent (or should be considered so). Unfortunately, the soft-headed nature of gamers somehow butchered the word to mean "Nuh uh, it means they're small!"... idiotic.
This is definitely something most people felt watching this year, I know I was thinking these very things while its was happening. Gotta start tuning in more closely to other awards shows.
If I had my way, awards would be awarded by last year's winner. If, somehow, they're being nominated again, go for who won that award two years ago. It would be great to see devs recognise and appreciate each other's work too.

Also, I really miss the award for recognition of historic or career achievement to remind us people who really turned out to be important in gaming, that helped make what games and gaming is today. And a little like 1 or 2 minute video documentary showing their story. Those were awesome.

I appreciate this take from you Alannah. After a year as legendary for gaming as this one, it’s such a tone deaf take to approach a game awards ceremony with a mindset that seemed so anemic in regards to actually appreciating the art of game development. I hope this isn’t a trend that continues…
Amen to everything you said ~ the wrap it up sign as they were speaking about their friend who passed away was both angering and absolutely heartbreaking 😞. Hopefully all this backlash will help some make better choices next year. And also understand what the awards are for and what we love about them. Anyway, thanks for speaking out ~ cheers!
I never thought about it before, but when you talked about receiving game of the year awards from an industry leader, that really hit me. That would be so beautiful and make that moment so memorable and special for those receiving the award. Also gives a lot of respect to the people that move the industry forward and made it what it is today.
Im not too surprised he gave Kojima a big moment. He loves that man...I agree with some of the comments. Just remove the awards and make it a Winter Game Fest if they are gonna rush awards and speeches.
I could've lived my life not seeing Geoff suck off Kojima for like what, 10 mins? Come the fuck on, the dude's games don't make sense AFTER they release, how the hell does it make sense to interview him before.
When it comes to Kojima… it feels too much by now. When he came back after being contractually obligated to not pick up his award for MGS V, it was nice. But now he has had his own company for years. He shouldn’t be seen as more special than anyone else. Plus, it increasingly feels in hindsight that Keighley called out Konami not for refusing to allow a famous director to accept his own award, but rather for not letting Kojima, specifically, do so. I start wondering if he would have said the same for Eiji Aunoma if he had been kicked out of Nintendo, or Hideki Kamiya out of Platinum, Shinji Mikami, et cetera.
This. I think BAFTA or Golden Joysticks do a more solid job balancing things as an awards show - TGA should change or maybe leave it to them. Notwithstanding Geoff's good intentions, TGA is a magnet for excess, in terms of other entertainment media and I'm sorry to say audience expectation too. Maybe having a Games Fest where, as Alanah says, you can do an event like this on the first night and do the awards on their own on a second night would work.
Respect, you didn't hold back and hit the nail on the head. I truly wanted the winners to have more time to enjoy their awards, because they do mean something. Thanks for speaking out.
Even during the 30 minutes of actual awards show, I had to listen to a ton of non game studio people talk for way longer than the actual recipients. I know that for the AAA studios they don't care, because they don't want to pay their rockstars, which is why the game industry doesn't have as many big names today as it did two decades ago. I completely agree about the celebrity thing, I mean at least pick someone who has been in a game, like Keanu Reeves, but I would rather have the voice actors from BG3 do those presentations, maybe even in character. I would love to have Neil Newbon present as Astarion, name a developer that wouldn't love that.
I generally avoid awards shows, but TGA I watch for the trailers/reveals. That said, it did seem a bit odd how they just read through so many and then how short the acceptances were. I pretty much agree with what you said. Also, any celebs should have something to do with the games, but I guess there's not a lot you can expect there.
Thank you for pointing so much about this out. I felt the same way about the Timothy Chalamet choice. And yes, it definitely felt like the awards show was embarrassed about video games - which was even a bit hurtful as a gamer, I can’t imagine how developers felt.
it was 3 1/2 hours other then cutting the celeb spots i'm not sure what they could have done. They could possibly tape it before hand to insure there enough time for speeches but then you have everything spoiled before it airs.
@@stewarde17 Simu Lui got more time to talk about how he tore his ACL playing basketball than Larian got to accept Game of the Year. Kojima got 13 minutes just to announce the title of his next game. Thank you as usual Alana. Very fair and balanced view especially acknowledging the balances Geoff may have to go through. Definitely feel the show would have the ability to add an extra 30 mins run time to keep the marketing and trailer while giving more limelight to the developers.
You think you do, but you don't. It's already a long show...give people an inch and they will take a mile and before you know it every winner will be making 8 minute long Christopher Judge speeches and be completely interminable. The majority of the audience would be gone by the halfway point.

@@TheBakerZen But like it or not that's exactly what tends to happen at awards shows. If there's 30 awards and you give everyone 2 minutes each you're adding an hour to the event run time minimum and when one or two start to push that time limit others do also. It would be too long for optimum audience retention...people nowadays don't have the attention span. Not to mention that the vast majority of the audience simply doesn't care for most of it...they tune in for the trailers and a small handful of awards. Period. They don't care about best e-sports coach/athlete/game/team/event...it's an incredibly niche sector of the overall gaming population. Neither do most care about accessibility or games for impact or best community support...go take a look at a few popular streamers coverage of the event and see what the chat reactions were around those segments. Hardly anybody cares and if they were forced to watch an acceptance speech for all of those, then people would be turning off in their droves. I guarantee it.
I am an unapologetic Larian Fanboy and I loved how Swen, winner of GOTY knocked this one out of the park too. All he got was 30 seconds and all he needed to say was 3 words: Thanks (players) Thanks (team) Remember (those team members who are no longer amongst us) That and stealing the show by showing up in plate armor had more impact than any hour long speech could have had.
I had gotten used to how quickly this award show rushes through the actual awards, but I’m glad so many people are calling it out. Hopefully we see some changes next year.
I remember seeing a comment saying how the Video Game Awards is an award show that feels embarrassed to be an award show. But yeah. Super loved that all the winners probably got collectively the same amount of time Kojima got for showing a nothing 40sec trailer showing 3 actors faces and then 8mins of talking about how it's definitely A game...
Your take on this is one of the most articulate and accurate perspectives I've heard so far. It really does feel like the show was a parent who's a little proud, but also a bit embarrassed by their kid's achievements. Like a dad saying, "I'm glad you can be happy and make money, but wouldn't something more practical be better for your future?" lol
As a dev on a team that won awards in 2021, it meant a lot to me to have it celebrated. All the hours and struggle was worth it in many ways, but that night in particular, was the best night of my life. I think there should really be more focus on the award aspect so that others are celebrated and get the opportunity to feel that super special way. Really loved your opinions beyond that, as well.
I just appreciate that we get this show at all. I remember when it started out it was kind of a meme, but it's grown to this big event where everyone pays attention and industry leaders, developers, voice actors even show up. The show can be improved, but I'm glad it's at this point.
I don't know, if for the show to exist it has to be a glorified ad show that actively disrespects the very talented people that make games, then it existing has literally 0 value. Whats the point of an award show that is ashamed of the industry its celebrating?
I think it would be cool and more honest if someone high up in the game industry could just invite all the nominees & winners to a house party, set up a small stage in a back yard and live stream. Allow teams that got rushed off the stage at the Game Awards as much time as they want to say what they need to say.

as always, some damn good points. as a fan of games and a game dev my self, thanks for all of this. Also SUPER glad you did a sea of stars shout out too! fav game of this year.
If they can have Ironmouse, an animated V-Tuber play a pre-recorded acceptance speach, they easily could have had a zoom call or something for devs to call in if they can't make it in person to give their speeches.
I also thought that the winners were not given enough time on stage. I understand that they dont to want people to give them 10 minutes of speech each. But it seemed like some ofnthe winners were like: hello, thank you for this award to us, that means a lot and i'd like to thank (music already starting in the back)... and they were just rushed to end their speach.
I think it would be super dope if Alanah (or any content creator, really) set up calls with as many of the winners of this year's show to give what would have been their full acceptance speech. I would love a compilation of acceptance speeches, both from award winners that did not have the opportunity to speak on stage, as well as those that got played off early - without, well... being played off early.
Strong agree with all of that. I get that from a show producer's perspective an 8-minute acceptance speech is bad, but surely a 30-second speech that gets interrupted by music before Swen can finish talking about his dead friend - or announce the XB launch - is much worse.
Well... Game awards is as meaningful as movie awards. Sure it mostly has meaning for the respected industry but it also has meaning for the general public. It does help drive the sale of movies and games to a wider audience. I usually buy the book that wins the Nobel price in literature every year, just because. I rarely read those types of books and I think allot people buy the game of the year just to see what the hype is all about.
@@al112v4 Smaller projects are usually just remakes of classic games though. With the exception of VR perhaps. Even a game like Stardew Valley is just a remake of Harvest Moon from 1996.
The difference tho is that movie awards (even the Oscars) judges are often exclusively veteran filmmakers themselves. So winning one is at least *do* have some meaningful evaluation and accomplishment to the ones making it. What does it even mean to won awards in TGA by folks from the magazines?

TH-camrs recapping the categories and winners spend WAY more time on on the actual games than the 'Game Awards', which is why I've been tuning in to TH-cam the next day for years now.
It seems their definition of indie developer is different than indie developers... Dave the Diver is developed by one of the largest worst multi billion dollar companies. Indie doesn't mean different graphics or quirky; it means independent, like BG3.
@@JosiahBradley didn't you just prove your initial point, that the definition of indie developer has become so loose/muddled that it depends on who you speak to and what they consider an indie to be?
This year was the first time I have ever seen "The Game Awards" covered on mainstream media and one non-Gaming related channels and podcasts. Two movie podcasts had segments on the Game Awards last week and I saw a story on CBS News about The Game Awards. I highly doubt that would have been the case if the Game Awards did not have celebrities and such.
I would also like to point out the narrowness of some nominations. For example, who thought that City Skylines 2, a game that had a disastrous launch and still has low scores on Steam, deserved a nomination in best Sim/Strategy Games? It felt like someone had to compile the list and knew almoast nothing about the genre they were sorting, and just picking the "Big names". And it comes to that in the end. Big Names. Some great and some less impactful like other titles that got absolutely no recognition. I'm sure that in the multyplayer category there should have been some different titles that got millions of views on streaming platforms, but they are way less goodlooking or optimized than the actual nominees, and yet the go so over the head of this commitee.
I personally think the previous GotY winner should present the award the next year for the new winner.

To be honest, I wouldn't even call some of them "big" stars. TGA, this year especially, was a mockery to the games industry.
I feel like if the Hollywood stars on the show love video games and want to be apart of the game awards that’s cool. I want the industry to grow and if that makes it grow then cool but if people don’t care about gaming are just being put on to make it seem cool that’s definitely weird.

He definitely cares, so I imagine he will
Geoff has already apologized on twitter, apparently there was some miscommunication - the Orchestra was not supposed to complement award winners so early from stage.
Also, no award is small award. Give EACH AND EVERY award winners a chance to at least come up to the stage to get the trophies they deserved. Please.
I'd have taken even more from him honestly. I certainly didn't tune in for speeches. I get the criticism though.

My favorite thing was Christopher judges joke about the cod campaign being really short and then the cod developers got mad on twitter

Or, and this seems a lot less likely, get enough people in power behind it to start something like the academy that funds the show
There's a reason why E3 died. If Geoff wants a successor to it the Game Awards is not the answer.
He even has Summer Games Fest to shove all the marketing and E3-ness into, and yet The Game Awards is still one big ad. I don't get it.

Neil Druckmann (TLOU2) -> Josef Fares (It Takes Two) -> Hidetaka Miyazaki (Elden Ring)

When i was watching this i thought it was weird that most of the awards felt kind of rushed
Thank you for this balanced take and at the same time showing much deserved appreciation for both the devs and Geoff! ❤
Not a fan of Geoff personally, think he hijacks shows and is bias towards Sony etc works hard of course
I feel everything was rushed and they need to give more time to the games. looking forward to seeing your award show if you plan on doing another.
Rushed and so slow at the same time
They need to focus on what got them there in the first place the extraordinary games that the directors and writers and all involved made.@@Tbear995
it was 3 1/2 hours other then cutting the celeb spots i'm not sure what they could have done.
And then there was that absolutely cringe muppet segment that went on for 5 minutes.
There was definitely plenty of time that could’ve been cut from the BS celeb appearances and weird “comedy” skits.
@@Elatenl it was much better last year. They are able to do it properly.
Stop licking their boots.
Thank you for blessing us with your grace in a video. Many blessings queen.
Well said - I do hope many of the observations you have mentioned are highly considered for the future Game Awards.
Thank you as usual Alana.
Very fair and balanced view especially acknowledging the balances Geoff may have to go through.
Definitely feel the show would have the ability to add an extra 30 mins run time to keep the marketing and trailer while giving more limelight to the developers.
Much like "Who you gonna call?", "Fair & Balanced" is a sentence that has been forever ruined.
completely agree, i want to see all awards delivered properly none of those side awards BS :(
@@Elatenl this should just call it the the game trailers night rather than the game awards then.
@@Elatenl You r right the majority of the people are awful.
You think you do, but you don't. It's already a long show...give people an inch and they will take a mile and before you know it every winner will be making 8 minute long Christopher Judge speeches and be completely interminable. The majority of the audience would be gone by the halfway point.
@@vallejomach6721 That literally never happened though, outside of that one instance? The game awards have been going for years, because ONE person gave a speech slightly too long (and it was a good speech), everyone should be stubbed for the entire show? These measures were extreme in the opposite direction.
100% agree with this. Thank you for talking about it.
You are a beautiful soul. I hope nothing ever ruins that. Keep being you. You got my sub.
Thank you for using your platform and influence to say what needs to be said.
I am an unapologetic Larian Fanboy and I loved how Swen, winner of GOTY knocked this one out of the park too. All he got was 30 seconds and all he needed to say was 3 words:
Thanks (players)
Thanks (team)
Remember (those team members who are no longer amongst us)
That and stealing the show by showing up in plate armor had more impact than any hour long speech could have had.
Him walking up to stage in the armor was so sick lol
I apologize on behalf of all the Nintendo fanboys giving you a ton of shit right now.
Its a shame fanboyisming led to them snaking a bunch of awards they didn't deserve.
You know I felt the same way watching the Game Awards... It felt soulless...
my favorite bit was when Sydnee said “yes, i was hoping for a new persona, a new persona game that is. i still wanna be Sydnee” 😅
I didn't get the joke, is it a reference?
she was very funny, I like her
@@haliterdogan3003 look up what persona actually means
that's cute tbh lol
@@haliterdogan3003 Persona is a game, yes. Just a slip of the tongue. I don't get what you didn't understand, they told the whole thing there.
The wonderful thing is that Larian didn't need the game awards to be appreciated, the universal praise and massive sales speak for themselves.
They should bring in more people like Ikumi Nakamura.
She really brought a lot of cheer on stage.
Her enthusiasm is infectious.
You are awesome Alana, thank you for the continuous insight into the industry!
I just appreciate that we get this show at all. I remember when it started out it was kind of a meme, but it's grown to this big event where everyone pays attention and industry leaders, developers, voice actors even show up. The show can be improved, but I'm glad it's at this point.
To be fair I totally agree with this.
Exactly! All the kiddies online are just overreacting as usual smh
@@hotcoldman77 You can be glad the show exists and have criticisms of it at the same time.
Now that… sounds like an amazing idea 😳
IDK about that...that sounds like good intentions that end up feeling awful for the people you're trying to help...."hey here's your pity fake award, thank you for everything you do"
@@AvengingN00b >> that sounds like good intentions that end up feeling awful for the people you're trying to help
Yeah, how insulting to have someone throw you a party in a house. I'll never forgive my family for celebrating my birthday.
>> hey here's your pity fake award
They already got those from Timothy Chalamey.
Don't need this. There's a whole industry focused award show by devs for devs. This is what the DICE awards are for.
Geoff did tweet that he asked the sound people to slow down and that they would address it for next. I'm glad he is at least aware it was an issue
as always, some damn good points. as a fan of games and a game dev my self, thanks for all of this. Also SUPER glad you did a sea of stars shout out too! fav game of this year.
Devs ftw
Finally someone who mentioned Sea of Stars. That game was amazing!
If they can have Ironmouse, an animated V-Tuber play a pre-recorded acceptance speach, they easily could have had a zoom call or something for devs to call in if they can't make it in person to give their speeches.
I'm with you. It felt weird to be watching an awards show where the winners don't get a chance get up and thank people.
Even that speech was too long ngl
I think it would be super dope if Alanah (or any content creator, really) set up calls with as many of the winners of this year's show to give what would have been their full acceptance speech. I would love a compilation of acceptance speeches, both from award winners that did not have the opportunity to speak on stage, as well as those that got played off early - without, well... being played off early.
Chris Judge’s speech last year was longer than this year’s cod campaign 🤣 that joke was one of my favorite parts of the show savage af 😂
Strong agree with all of that. I get that from a show producer's perspective an 8-minute acceptance speech is bad, but surely a 30-second speech that gets interrupted by music before Swen can finish talking about his dead friend - or announce the XB launch - is much worse.
I hope everyone is having a great weekend
That’s a good point. And that’s usually why I think it is a big deal in that sense.
But they only mostly promote the big stuff, not the smaller projects. And it sucks so badly.
I have not touched a game of a year winner because just because they win, means nothing to me especially the last 3.
As an aspiring indie, I appreciate the heck out of folks like you.
THANK YOU! Watched it over the weekend and thought I was getting crazy. It felt like was watching 90 % ads and some awards sprinkled here and there. I agree that having ads to fund the whole thing makes sense, but watching the show afterwords on TH-cam in the state YT hade become ad-wise, was almost exhausting. YT ads every other minute, than ads disguised as trailers..
They just have to find the right balance. Maybe do all the awards first hour and then do the trailers the second half or maybe make it a two day event like a winter E3. I just think if it was closer to 5050 most people wouldn't watch. Most of my gaming friends really don't care about the awards and just watch for the trailers
Not to sound TOO rude but it sounds like your friends are soulless, I personally used to have "friends" like that and replaced them all, nowadays I stay away from normies unless absolutely necessary
@@AvengingN00bnot to sound rude but they probably dodged a bullet with you. If you’re gonna ghost your so called friends because they don’t like something as trivial as watching people accept awards then you’re the weird one in this scenario.
@@K1ngHardaway you're not rude just confused. I didn't say anything about ghosting, people with the same interests make for better friends, people with similar values and respect for similar things make better friends, you and your little mind are assuming too much about what I said
@@AvengingN00b lil bruh you said you replaced your so called friends and then turned around and said you stay away from what you call “normies”. Like I said those friends definitely dodged a bullet with you.
@@K1ngHardaway I did, a grown-up man choses his friends wisely and does not have time for people that are not great friends, that's a simple example of growing up and completely normal, it sounds to me that you're just very young and don't know anything about this yet, or are just fine with having lots of shitty "friends". I'm sure once you and hopefully your mind grow up a bit you'll see what I meant with my post, as it is though I'm not gonna waste my time on an Internet rando anymore o/
"They tune in for the reveals, they don't tune in for the awards." Yes, because those of us who did tune in for the awards realized it was a waste of time years ago because of how little time was spent on the awards. So we stopped watching.
Indie doesn't mean different graphics or quirky; it means independent, like BG3.
yeah, and someone like CD Project Red, with their indie hits The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077.
@@TigonIII CD projekt red is not an independent studio, they are publicly traded. Troll harder.
