It's easy U20 world cup when still at school 2 x World Ciups with MASSIVE contributions under extreme pressure to nail long kicks in quarter, semi and finals.
@@wlk2408 Im with you... The issue isn't the player, it's the systems of defence they play against and defensive duties that is now put on a 10 that Naas didn't have to handle. The other thing NAAS had was speed. He could keep up with Gerber and Reinach.
No matter what you say Handré pollard ice cold veins and bmt simply can’t be matched even under the harshest conditions he’s ability to control a game and keep calm under pressure is simply incredible
In the Springboks' history, we've seen several outstanding flyhalves. While Pollard has an excellent boot for kicking penalties, Naas Botha also possessed an impressive kicking ability and was a more effective attacking flyhalf than Pollard.
Simply the Best. Morne Steyn all day!!! He was a consummate pro, a points machine & a great all round player & leader. He played in an Era when we weren't at our best, I reckon if u paired Morne with our forwards now, he wudve been the better 10.
I like all of these guys and loved Honiball - Naas's attitude made it very difficult for other teams - at all levels. He was supremely confident in his ability - almost arrogantly so. His defence was crap - but he played for the Boks in three different decades. For good reason. I have never seen another flyhalf that could read the game and positional play like him. And when he played with a good backline he was extremely good at getting them on attack. And he had no problem somehow finding a win from behind a struggling pack or an average backline. His kicking was a deadly weapon - not to mention the scoreboard... I remember how one of the Bok's famous inside centres told in an interview years after the fact while recalling his first game for the Boks. He recalled Naas saying to him just before they ran onto the field: "You will receive the ball three times - fuck it up and you will never see it again..."😂 He must have done well, as Naas hardly kicked the ball that day. The only better fly-half I have ever seen is Dan Carter - who could do it all.
I guess it boils down to by what standard you judge it. If it’s achievement, Pollard already is the best fly half of all time. Not only he’s won a back-to-back RWC, he was so instrumental, that the team wasn’t winning either of those without him. He was MotM in both semi finals. Dan Carter, hands down the best fly half of all time by ability, got injured in pool stages in 2011, and did not play a single playoff game. The 2011-2015 ABs were so good, that they would and could win it all even without the world’s best fly-half.
Errol Tobias was a better stepper then Danie Gerber could control kicking game better then Naas Botha and was solid on defence.best ever not recognise because he wasn't white even though he play for Springboks during apartheid.
@@wilmanmitchell4410 you lost me at “better stepper than [the best at that until Kolbe]” and again at “could control kicking game better than [the best at that ever]”
Gee... I always find these discussions so interesting, but frustrating on what people value. For me for Naas Botha had become an urban legend. So for point accumulation he is legendary. But for me when it counted Stransky, Steyn and Pollard have been the fly half we needed at times. All three with ice in their veins. Pollard gets discounted only when many still compare him to flashy x factor flyhalfs like Libbock and say he's lacking. I think he fits the team stylistically all round though.
Not only did Morné kick the winning penalty against the British & irish Lions in 2009 but he did it again 12 years later when he subbed out Pollard. Now knowing what we know about Pollard and how well he handles pressure, that is saying sonething about Morné and how much the Boks trusted in him. He simply does not miss. Morné did not get a lot of chances in the number 10 jersey because of politics in rugby but if he had more caps i'm sure he would be the best 10 in the world ever.. kick the sht out of the crusaders and chiefs in die super rugby finals, beating B&I Lions twice.. you could only imagine how much more he would've done. I think Rassie should hire him as the Boks kicking coach.. that way Libbok will get better
Nasa Botha was very much a general on the field. He could read a game and make significant kicking decisions when it matters most. Danie Craven called him a “genie”, but here is the problem for him: he needed a winning pack. Naas wasn't good on defence. I hated him passionately because Western Province was the best team in those days, and he kicked us to pieces.` what hurt, even more, was his famous words- it is the scoreboard that counts. I am unsure if he had Handre Pollard's ability to attack and defend. Only kicking won the games in those days, but now? I am very sceptical. That's why I think maybe Pollard is the best fly-half.
You can't compare Pollard to Naas. Naas was a rugby genius. They did not call him the little General for nothing. No other player in any position has ever been able to read a match like him. He was always where the ball was going before the ball was even there. To say that Pollard has been in 2 winning WC's and that makes him the best is pathetic. He did win this one for us because of his kicking. But the team "won" him the kicks. I remember Naas winning more than one game with drop goals when he realized they were not going anywhere. If I remember correctly the one was on a wet Ellis Park where nobody else would even have tried to drop. In my time(60 years) Naas is nr 1 and Henry nr 2 without any doubt. I would even go as far as to say he is the best the world has ever had.
No sit not even close to Naas Botha class. Reason simple. Can he kick with both feet. How well does he understand space. How good is his pass. How quick is he . Difference this. If Pollard was not the main goal kicker he would npt make the bok side. Naas would . Simple
Naas and Morné were kicking flyhalves, modern rugby does not suit them so well, Handré more complete. Naas could not make or take tackles well. Morné Du Plessus needed police protection after THAT tackle 😂
Personally I preferred Pat, he was better than Handre when they both started regularly for the boks. Handre had more time on the field because they of Pats injuries but overall he is better
Pollard kicked goals that the team won him. Behind a dominant pack with Pollard at flyhalf. The boks could still loose. With Naas at flyhalf behind a dominate pack the boks could not loose . Morne Steyn also better than Pollard
For me, Its Naas Botha. Pollard is the most sucxessfup flyhalf...but he is not the best...he is definitely not the most talented. He is a big game player but his general play is not the greatest. He is also not the best kicker ...we had Frans Steyn, we had Jannie De Beer, We had Morne Steyn, We had many good kickers in history...But For me, its Naas. When I looked at the world cup final...Pollard attempted drop goals that Frans Steyn, Morne Steyn, Jannie De Beer and Naas would have easily slotted over. Springboks Ice man in big moments is Pollard in the modern era...but Naas is the goat.
you are talking the biggest load of sh;t. Maybe you should go and ask Danie Gerber about that. And whilst you do that ask Ray Mordt. They will both just laugh at you like most people on this podcast are.

The one channel you know you gonna press like before watching,, awesome. Polly for me. Keeping your cool at a RWC final is beast mode.
Has to be Naas: the rules were changed due to him, but Handré the 2nd best and most important due to his incredible WC record!
