  • @renloris460
    @renloris460 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    Just to clarify, what you used was a dip pen, not a fountain pen. The idea behind a fountain pen is that it has an internal reservoir of ink, like an ink sack or interior piston, so that it doesn't have to be dipped. Thus the ink can constantly flow out (like a fountain) rather than being dipped every half sentence or so.

    As a control, try using the quill without any kind of liquid loaded into it to see if the etching may cause a darkening effect from potentially thinner paper where you wrote.

    Hey just quick terminology thing from a fountain pen enthusiast, your pen is a dip pen, you can also call it a quill because of the feather (I think). It is not a fountain pen. Fountain pens have a reservoir of ink which is drawn through a metal nib via capillary action.

    Can you make a ballpoint "bleach pen"? Maybe lemon juice would also work for ink. With the sharp edge of the fountain pen, it makes an indentation in the paper and it seems that you would be able to read the message with your naked eye, or by using the flat side of a pencil.
    Also, could you use tonic water on a surface that doesn't reflect UV light (maybe a different kind of paper) to get the opposite effect as the bleach?

    Well, someone appreciated The Dark Tower. I personally didn't find the story all that memorable or well thought-out, but to each's own. One thing I can say positively about that film was that the rendering was done well, and I have no doubts that they fully animated those creatures (I forgot what they were called, the things that feed on fear, sadness, and anger: the primary human weaknesses) were made ground-up from cubes or spheres in a tool like Blender, as opposed to using somebody in a costume and darkening the resulting picture.

    First, they take the dinglepop and they smooth it out with a bunch of schleem. The schleem is then repurposed for later batches. They take the dinglebop and they push it through the grumbo, where the fleeb is rubbed against it. It's important that the fleeb is rubbed, because the fleeb has all of the fleeb juice. Then a Schlameeh shows up, and he rubs it, and spits on it. They cut the fleeb. There are several hizzards in the way. The blamphs rub against the chumbles, and the klubus and grumbo are shaved away. That leaves you with a regular old plumbus!

    I think the bleach works because the paper has special dyes in it to make it appear whiter. Under the UV torch, these glow a pale blue. The bleach reacts with them and stops them glowing under the UV, but doesn't alter the appearance of the paper all that much

    What happens if you pour liquid nitrogen into molten metal?

    • @peppergames5268
      @peppergames5268 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think nothing will happen, the liquid N is way to light, to even do something to the surface of the metal, maybe if you throw the liquid violently, will make some splashs.

  • @galfisk

    I guessed that the bleach would destroy the optical whitening pigment in the paper, and that seems to be right.
    I think the bicarbonate is supposed to change the color of the lemon juice towards green, since is pH dependent. Water used to boil rutabaga or red cabbage works the same. You should use enough to really stain the paper though. And a stronger alkali might work better. I played with rutabaga water, blotting paper, sodium carbonate and acetic acid when exploring indicators as a kid.

      The sugar caramelizes and burns, turning brown. Mixing up sugar water does the same thing.

    • @andrewbenge4766
      @andrewbenge4766 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it's just breaking down at a lower temperature then the paper, so it can burn before it

    • @-eMpTy-
      @-eMpTy- 6 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      When you wrote your message using the lemon juice, carbon-based compounds in the juice were absorbed into the paper’s fibers. Also, since lemon juice ink is a weak acid, it softened the fibers in the paper. The added heat caused some of the chemical bonds to break down in the dried juice and some carbon was cut loose. When the carbon came into contact with air, it burned or oxidized. One effect of oxidation is things turn a darker color. (Some oxidation doesn’t need heat to occur; it just needs a little air. Think of a piece of apple, banana, or pear left out on a plate for a while.)
      Lemon juice - like most fruit juice - contains carbon compounds. These compounds are pretty much colorless at room temperature. Heat breaks down these compounds and releases the carbon. When carbon comes in contact with air (specifically oxygen), oxidation occurs and the substance turns light or dark brown. If it oxidizes long enough, it can go all the way to black.
